Jeanine Queley, Carol Glionka, Sandy Maleon, Paula Bettano 155 156 157 158 i BLOODMOBILE 1 4 After 1 5 years Saugus entered the season not knowing what to expect with a feeling of apprehension and confidence, but this season turned out to be the biggest surprise in performance. With a hard working group and good team work each player contributed a lot to the season. This year was the first year we won the conference, though in 1975 we were tied in first place. The seniors were valuable and their contrabution was the attitude for next years team to follow. The following seniors have been a big factor in winning the championship: Co-Captains Dan Hashem and Frank Dole, Eric Pizzotti, Paul Serino, Dan Murphy, Tim Fawcett, Bill Mitchell, Bill Osgood, John Coffey, Ed Mazman, Craig Orlando, Tim Sheehan, Brian Riley, Craig Spinney, Mike St Pierre, Ken Sparks, George Nicolo, Frank Serino. The most memorable game was the Thankgiving Day victory. It gave the Sachems a 9-1 record and a good chance at the superbowl. It was also the most memorable because of the previous years humiliating defeat. The support was felt and appreciated by the team throughout the season. They didn ' t play well against teams that did poorly. But teams that were good, they played well against. Although on the whole the team worked well together, team mem- bers such as Matt Wall, Mike Jensen, Keith Mansfield, Bill Bean, Kenny Taylor and Art Connors were a great asset. After the seniors leave the remain- ing team members feel that they will be able to do well next sea- son. This is partially due to the excellent coaching by Coach Smith, who has been called The best coach in the conference and the experience left by the gradu- ating teammates. A couple of the highlights were the Beverly 1-0 win, and the Marblehead away game. Support was greatly appreciated at the Marblehead game. 171 172 173 174 i 176 177 180 The Girl ' s Basketball team had another fine season. Under the leadership of coaches Diane Bena and Debbie LeDrew, the girls played excellent basketball and sport a fine record for the 1978 season. Once again they made it to the States and put on an ex- cellent performance. It was a highly spirited team which had the ability to come from behind and win many tough games. 181 182 183 This years struggling basketball team showed great spirit and effort, even with the abseee of one of their star basketball players, Keith Manning. The team put on an excellent performance throughout the season. The spirited team would like to thank the Coach and all the fans for their support during the past season. 187 L 188 189 190 191 Wrestling is an individual sport but members work for team points. The over ail record was not well but the team did well on the sectional tournament. Seniors were a great contribution to the team. David DiPesa (100- lb) won 2nd place in the State. Bill Mitchell, heavy weight, came in 4th place in State. Matt Wall was 2nd in Sectional (1201b). Walter Cordeau (1691b) came in 3rd in Sectional. Kevin Barb contributed a lot by being in three weight classes. Other seniors in- clude Mike McCarthy, Glenn Davis and Frank Luongo who had a good record. Next years team will need a lot of off season work to do well but they are willing to put the effort needed into it. In the six years the wrestling team has been in competetion, they ' ve never had a losing season. This fact helps them to strive to keep the record. Although they work as individ- uals. The members supported each other during the meets, the season ended with a 9-4-1 rec- ord. The good spirit of Saugus has been favoritely spoken of. i 195 196 The second year of competition seemed to be a bright- er year for the Winter Track team. Captain for the boys ' team was Craig Orlando and the girls ' captain was Nancy Forrest. Coaches for this new team were Coach Angelo and Coach Keddy. For such an inex- perienced team they showed great strength and dedi- cation throughout the entire season. The coaches are very pleased and proud of all the team members. 197 198 199 200 201 202 205 Gymnastics 206 The girls ' s gymnastics team enjoyed an impressive season under the leadership of co-captains Andrea Pelosi and Kathy Cargill. It was evident that there was much improvement over previous years. The new sophomores helped the more experienced Juniors and Seniors build a highly respected team in the tough and strong Northeast Conference. Many team members competed in the All Star meet held at Salem High School, and one member, Kathy Cargill, com- peted in the State Competition.
