Sau- gus won five meets and four of their losses were by close scores. The team was led by the run- ning of Bob Smith, John Slat- tery, and Brian Taylor. Smith and Slattery finished first and second in almost every race while setting numerous course records; they were named to the league All-Star team. The Sachem ' s success was due to aggressive play and an all around team effort. The Sachems were led by Marty Holloran, who averaged 17.6 points per game and came in second in the con- ference scoring. Also important to the team were starting seniors Joe Casey and Steve Spinney and juniors Bob Romeo and Steve Gannon. Representing Saugus at the All Star game were Marty Holloran and Bob Romeo. A successful season ended with the Sachems qualifying for the State Tourney. Another exciting game was a last second win over Gloucester. The season was highlighted by qualify- ing for the Conference playoffs. The Sachems advanced to the finals only to lose to league champion Winthrop in what was undoubtedly the most exciting game of the year. In the State Tournament Saugus placed 25th out of 90 teams present. Bert Guerra and Dan Courdeau finished 6th in their respective categories, and John Sullivan finished 7th in his weight class. The team was led by seniors and co-captains Maria Buchan and Rose Boyle. Rose was a high scorer on vault- ing and Maria did very well on floor exercises, also competing on the beam. Underclassmen contributing to the Sachems included Carla Saunders, a junior working in floor exercises and the beam, and Debbi Wilson, a sophomore who did a good job in floor exercises. The Gymnas- tics team can look forward to another successful year with many interested underclassmen. Their attendance at the football games was a tremendous inspiration to the team. At the Christmas Concert, due to Mr. Mitchell ' s illness. Mr. Kimmel rehearsed and con- ducted the band. Along with junior and senior high musical groups, the band held a concert to raise money for the Heart Fund. The Spring Concert was held on April 12 and was a great success. The full marching band and squads embarked on their Spring Concert Tour on May 8th. They played concerts in Massa- chusetts and New York, and entered in marching competition in Niagra Falls and Ontario, Canada.
