SMITH, SUPERINTENDENT ANNA V. JACOBS, Administrative Assistant To the Members of the Class of 1968: The recent visit of two Russian teachers to the Public Schools of Saugus provided an opportunity for several educators in Saugus to share experiences with their counterparts from a foreign country. Although this visit was much too brief, it seems to me that those of us who had the opportunity to question these Russians and to listen to their comments on education and youth, in a sense, were having an opportunity to peer behind a curtain (supposedly made of iron) and were finally viewing a Russian as a human being. Even in such brief contact one was impressed, not by the differences in thinking between the Russian and American educators (although such differences were apparent), but by the similarities in common problems and experiences found to be occurring in the pedagogical life of both countries. Political differences were forgotten, for the moment, at least, as both Russian and American teachers lost their personal identities and concentrated upon a common interest and concern — the education of youth ! Van Cliburn experienced this same phenomenon in music when he participated in the International Tchaikovsky Competi- tion in Moscow. After this moving experience he wrote: There are no political barriers to music. The same blood running through Americans also runs through the Soviet people and compels us to enjoy the same art. What thrills me so much is the spirit of musical unity achieved at the Tchaikovsky Competition by the people of the World whose governments are at political loggerheads. Whether the common interest be education, music, art, science, business or some other field of endeavor, if allowed to be freely expressed, this interest becomes the focal point and varying nationality becomes meaningless. From such experiences one learns to respect a person as an individual regardless of political or religious beliefs, race or color. There will always be differences in political thinking among the various peoples of the world. If such differences are not to lead to violence and war, the people of the world must consciously strive to find these common focal points of interest and by pursuing them together learn to live with these differences. It seems to me that the young people of today, with their honest approach to life, their respect for uniqueness, and their regard for the individual person are better equipped than previous generations to break down the artificial barriers of nation- ality, color or religious prejudice. It is my sincere h ope that the members of the Saugus High School Class of 1968, as they proceed to further schooling or to immediately face life ' s problems, will exemplify such an attitude and each person with whom they come in contact will be respected for his contribution in life as a person. In this way prejudice, fear, and misunderstanding of other peoples will become words without meaning and the world will be a better place in which to live. Sincerely, 3f. Superintendent of Schools : V ySHfim MAURICE F. SMITH— Superintendent of Schools Nttp SAUGUS HIGH SCHOOL SAUGUS. MASSACHUSETTS 01906 ASHTON F. DAVIS. PRINCIPAL ROBERT J. FRASER, Vice Principal ROBERT J. CLARK, VICE PRINCIPAL Telephone 233-4000 To the Members of the Class of 1968: For you it is graduation time. Understandably, you are happy to have attained this goal, and you look forward to entering a more adult world. Yet I realize that many of you face the future with considerable anxiety. You have some concern about what lies ahead for you personally, whether it be college in the fall or the employment for which you have been training. More than that, you are apprehensive about the grave domestic and international problems that beset our country. One cannot blame you for having misgivings about the future. There is every indication that the coming decades will be strangely new, rapid- ly moving, revolutionary. It seems likely that mankind will find it necessary to meet one unpredictable challenge after another. But in facing up to the smaller crises of high school, you have readied yourselves to meet the larger crises of another day. Albert Einstein once said, Education is that which remains after you have forgotten everything you learned at school. I am sure that this great genius was not down grading formal schooling. Rather he was calling attention to the truth that inert facts, pieces of information, that you have learned here will in time be forgotten, while the attitudes, aspirations, and ideals cultivated here will remain with you and grow, for better or worse, throughout your life. I am confident that your studies at Saugus High School have pre- pared you for your careers in the immediate future, and I feverently hope and trust that that which remains after you have forgotten everything learned at school will fortify and equip you for living in the new, excit- ing, and fast-changing world of tomorrow. My best wishes to each of you as you join the alumni of Saugus High School. Most sincerely, Principal L • ' I ■■HH i • Ut ■tfW wum ASHTON F. DAVIS— Principal ROBERT J. Wheaton f W w Is € W ADIEU The time has come to say good bye, For now we leave, No more to tread Our familiar, favorite haunts, Where scenes as precious As myriad pearls Glitter in our Today, But where in our Tomorrow, Only memories will exist. We leave our halls and classes, Where friends as dear As scintillating diamonds Stud the way, To venture upon the dusty, pit-pocked Roads of Life, To trudge, to sweat, to work, To rise or fall in our right In this exacting World of Reality. And we shall go Upon Life ' s Roads To the very ends of the Earth; Yet if no more we chance to meet, If no more we work and laugh together, Then, remember the best wishes Of your distant classmates Guide you on your perilous way. The time has come to say adieu; The sands of youth have slipped away And, emerged, we are the men and the women Of this chaotic World; May we with Guidance Divine And sweat and blood sincere Succeed in righting our Vacillating sphere. But we must leave; The World is beckoning with its forlorn finger: May we succeed with glory In our undertakings May we succeed where others have failed May we triumph in the name of Humanity May our strokes be telling blows Smashing upward to success. Adieu, Classmates of ' 68 Goodbye to mutual memories of many years; For the time has come, We dare not linger longer For fear we miss our chance And fall by the wayside. Farewell, Classmates Adieu . . . and Good Luck. II ,A Mll WW ■We, the Editors of the 1968 Tontoquonian, sincerely wish to thank Mr. Bill Rowan of the L. G. Balfour Co. for his valued and much appreciated assistance in the prepara- tion of this book, Mr. Guy Quartorone and Mr. Peter Aiello, our photographers, Stephen Carlson, our staffs, and last, but certainly not least, Miss Helen Towle for her patience. Finally, we hope this book will bring as much joy and happy memories to you as you thumb through the pages, as it has brought us in presenting it to you.
