ASHTON F. DAVIS. PRINCIPAL LEON C YOUNG. VICE PRINCIPAL JOHN B. LEAHY. VICE PRINCIPAL SAUGUS HIGH SCHOOL SAUGUS. MASSACHUSETTS 01906 Telephone 233-4000 To the Members of the Class of 1965: You are well aware, I am sure, of the whirlwind advances now taking place in science and technology. It is indeed an exciting, yet sobering fact that innumerable great scientific discoveries and developments have occurred within the short span of your pre-adult life. Your birth preceded that of the space age. Within your lifetime man-made satellites have begun to circle the earth and orbit the sun. Supersonic travel has become common and space flight a reality. During this period of time at least eleven additional chemical elements have been discovered, and it has been estimated that half of the chemicals in commercial use today were unrecognized before you were born. Within your span of years hundreds of peacetime uses of atomic energy have been developed. Inventors have built computors capable of solving in an hour problems that would have previously taken scores of men centuries to solve. The accelerating pace of future discoveries and inventions appears to be incomprehensible. It is clear only that society is becoming much more complex; and all of your energies, abilities, and talents will be needed to meet the enorm- ous challenge of tomorrow. To understand this new environment, it will be necessary for you to. continue to learn long after your years of schooling are over. I would remind you, however, that in this changing world some things are unchangeable. The need for idealism is eternal; and such virtues as honesty, courage, kindness, and service to fellow men must never disappear. It is my belief and trust that you have been given a strong foundation on which to build in the future, and I have confidence in you as a class. My very best wishes to each of you as you enter the ranks of the alumni of Saugus High School. Most sincerely, Cy tufyis 7T X a -c y Principal
