equiring the tools of learning is theme of '58 Sawyer The theme of our '58 SANYYER is Acquiring the Tools of Learningfl Throughout this publication many pictures and write-ups may be found depicting our life at Saugerties High School. These help to show that our subjects, clubs, sports, organizations and activities are all tools of learning. First, we should consider the subjects pursued by us as pupils. The subjects, with their accompanying homework and study, help to provide a sound educational background for future success. XVe are, through hard work and thought, acquiring a broader knowledge of the world around us, an essential benefit of education. School clubs, sports, organizations and activities help to provide some of our tools of learning. Through them we not only become acquainted with fellow pupils and teachers, but learn to live with them and share with them the benefits which can be derived from contact with other human beings. Our various extra-curricular activities not only provide us with recreation, enter- tainment and good fellowship but help to develop qualities as leaders or follow- ers. It is only through the assistance of fellow classmates or teammates that a few pupils can become officers or leaders in their groups. These leaders gain the experience of formulating and putting plans into effect while a still greater number acquire the ability to sit in the judgment of the decisions of their leaders. These students learn to examine and weigh evidence instead of making hasty conclusions. This group comprises the citizens of tomorrow who will guide and direct the leaders of our nation. Our extra-curricular activities are important tools in helping us broaden our knowledge and abilities. XVhen we engage in dramatics, or musical organ- izations, or debating, for example, we are learning more and we are developing the abilities which we possess. XVc also acquire a medium through which we may express our thoughts and release our excess energies in worthwhile pursuits. Wwe are fortunate to have such an extensive extra-curricular program at Saugerties High School. Saugerties High School offers us the tools by which we may learn, but it is up to us to work with them. Only through use can we gain full benefit from these excellent tools of learning.
