These help to show that our subjects, clubs, sports, organizations and activities are all tools of learning. First, we should consider the subjects pursued by us as pupils. The subjects, with their accompanying homework and study, help to provide a sound educational background for future success. XVe are, through hard work and thought, acquiring a broader knowledge of the world around us, an essential benefit of education. School clubs, sports, organizations and activities help to provide some of our tools of learning. Through them we not only become acquainted with fellow pupils and teachers, but learn to live with them and share with them the benefits which can be derived from contact with other human beings. Our various extra-curricular activities not only provide us with recreation, enter- tainment and good fellowship but help to develop qualities as leaders or follow- ers. It is only through the assistance of fellow classmates or teammates that a few pupils can become officers or leaders in their groups. These leaders gain the experience of formulating and putting plans into effect while a still greater number acquire the ability to sit in the judgment of the decisions of their leaders. These students learn to examine and weigh evidence instead of making hasty conclusions. This group comprises the citizens of tomorrow who will guide and direct the leaders of our nation. Our extra-curricular activities are important tools in helping us broaden our knowledge and abilities. XVhen we engage in dramatics, or musical organ- izations, or debating, for example, we are learning more and we are developing the abilities which we possess. XVc also acquire a medium through which we may express our thoughts and release our excess energies in worthwhile pursuits. Wwe are fortunate to have such an extensive extra-curricular program at Saugerties High School. Saugerties High School offers us the tools by which we may learn, but it is up to us to work with them. Only through use can we gain full benefit from these excellent tools of learning. Senior Ball was highlight of year's social activities All those who attended our 1957 Senior Ball were carried hy faneifnl flight from the Saugerties High School ugymv to the magical island of Hawaii. The theme that had heen ehosen for the Ball was Romantic Hawaii. The Ngymf was decorated with lmndreds of halloons overhead and palm and eoeoanut trees around the floor. In one corner our enterprising seniors ereeted a grass hut which ineluded a dancing Hawaiian girl under its thatched roof. The floor was a rainhow of color with young ladies dressed in pastel gowns and sparkling jewelry and hoys transformed into soft-spoken gentlemen hy the mood of the evening. This annual affair is eagerly awaited hy the students and is one of the finest activities during the year. Everyone enjoys dressing up and attending the Ball. and for the seniors it is a night of hitter-sweetness for it is their last Ball for them as students at Sangerties High School. The 1957 Senior Ball is an eyent which will remain in the memories of all who attended for many years to eome. 1 S., , 5,59 .sf l'l'X2. The plot of the operetta centers around the hope of Dr. Falke to revenge a most distasteful trick his good friend, Mr. Stein, has played on him. In order to punish Mr. Stein properly, Dr. Falke goes to a great deal of trouble arranging an eventful evening at the home of the fabulous Prince Orlofsky, who is that very night giving a magnificent masquerade ball. Mr. Stein has, in the meantime, been sentenced to three days in jail because his inefficient lawyer cannot save him from this terrible fate. Dr. F alke, however, does not let this interfere with his plans for the evening. He manages to have Mr. Steinis sentence begin the following day rather than that night. Then he persuades Mr. Stein to attend the masquerade ball with him, but he's not to tell his wife for she surely would not allow him to go because of all the beautiful ladies who would be in attendance. The flirtatious Mr. Stein agrees. As he is dressing for the ball, Dr. Falke explains his plan to Madam Stein and incorporates her help for she is anxious to teach her husband a lesson for his flirting ways. XVhen Dr. Falke and Mr. Stein arrive for the ball, they find a delightful atmosphere of beautiful ladies, music, and dancing. Mr. Stein immediately turns his charm on a mysterious masked Countess. He spends the evening telling her of her beauty, swearing to her that he is not married. Eventually comes the hour Dr. Falke has been waiting for. Mr. Stein is faced by his wife as the masked coun- tess and his old friend, Frank, the jailer. Amidst laughter and merrymaking he is taken off to jail. T L Mer., W . -LA. Nlayone, Horn- Although the SAXYYERS won only one game in their first year of football in the Dutchess County Scholastic League, the future holds nothing to fear for the Sauger- ties grid men. Valuable experience was gained by many of the underclassmen which should stand them in good stead as they enter the 1958 football season. The club will lose only three letter men through the graduat- ing class of '58. Ceorge Neher, the team's high scorer and spectacular half-back, captained the 1957 SAXVYERS and gained much valuable yardage for the squad. As in the past, the belly series composed the major portion of the SAXVYERS' offensive system. Variations of the straight Tn employed by the team included single wing and unbalanced line plays. The defensive pattern was flexible but the 5-4 and 6-3 defense were used most of the time. S.ll.S. stuck to the ground usually, but the many com- pleted forward passes received by senior right end beck. THIRD HOVV: Coach Seither, lt. Lowell Mayone aided greatly the teams offensive bat- tle. A light and inexperienced line was one of the teamis major handicaps. Senior Fred Ilornbeck saw much action as a guard while junior Hit XYhitaker consistently opened up holes in the opponents' line as he played offensive tackle. Don Mormile, another outstanding junior, was very effective as a hard-hitting back and late in the season was moved up front to bolster the weak offensive line. lt is expected by all that Coach Straulfs eleven will do much better in their future years in the Dutchess County Scholastic League. On several occasions the Sawyers. led by the booming bats of XVhitaker, Riozzi, and lirceg, scored more than twenty runs. The S.H.S. nine suffered three defeats at the hands of Rondout, Unteora, and llighland. They succeeded in winning dual victories over our newly acquired rival, Kingston, and our old rival, Catskill. A 15-3 record was compiled and the Ulster County Athletic League Crown was again captured. jt'Nl0lt VARSITY BASEBALL lu 1957 Xlr. jones piloted a very impressive j. V. base- ball team. Their victories were many and their defeats few. This can be attributed to the fact that they were well balanced and high-spirited. The junior SAXVYERS had pitchers that eould pitch, hitters that could hit, and tielders that could field. Xlr. jones combined size and power with speed and agility as he was building his club. The majority of his players were freshmen who had participated in Little League and Babe Ruth League competition. With a little more experience these j.V.'s will be a powerful Varsity. l liUN'l' HONV. left fo ri lit l lieuisou, l . Florio, E. flUllll2lVVLly, j. lloberti. SECOND RONV: E Kime, j. Croves, Nl. Coach Smithis track men completed another winning season when they captured the Ulster County Athletic League crown in the spring of 157. Many new records were established during the season and the only meet that the SAVVYERS didn't win was the Hudson Valley Relays which was held at New Paltz and included competitors from the Mohawk as well as the ,Hudson River valley. The season opened on a bright note as the SAYVYERS overpowered New Paltz and XYallkill in a triangular meet in which two new school records were set. john Dragan moved the marker in the discus throw out to 118'3 and Roeser set a new time in the 880 at 2:15. Dragan broke his own record in another meet, a dual contest with Hudson, and set the present school record for the discus throw at 132'2 . john also set a record in the shot put at 45'8l.i when Saugerties met Marlboro but this was subsequently beaten by Fred Brenuing when he placed third in the Section 1V meet at XYilson Field in Middletown with a push of 46'7?l . Not all of the glory goes to the field events men, though. as new records were set in the 180-yard low hurdles and the mile run as well as the 880. llarry Vickery set the record in the hurdles at 23.3 seconds in competition at New Paltz in the U.C.A.L. meet. One of the outstand- ing members of the S.H.S. track team in 1957 was freshman i'Bill'l Morgan. As one of the areals top milers, he set the time at 4147.4 in a dual meet with Onteora. C Snyder, C. Championship After winning the U.C.A.L. championship, he went on to place second at the sectionals and b1'eak his own record with a clocking of 4:44.1. Senior Billy Zeilman will be remembered as one of the best sprinters ever known to Saugerties. After many wins in the regular season, he went on to capture the title in both the 100- and 220-yard dashes at the sectionals. The SAXVYERS didnit win any of the track events at the Hudson Valley Relays although they did place well in several instances. Fred Brenning, however, won both the discus throw and shot put crowns and George Neher captured first place in the broad jump. 1957 SCHOOL A'l1l'lLETlC RECORD BREAKERS-l RON'l' ROXV, left to riglzt: Cl. Straub. 1957 -1958 Junior Basketball jUNIOB VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach Straub this year lost most of last yearls ball club to the Varsity. He also faced a rebuilding task and excellent competition. The junior High Basketball Program of last year furnished him with some fine young prospects. Besides having a young team, Coach Straub faced disciplinary problems when some of his cagers decided that they did not need much practice. Later in the season, however, the young SAXVYEBS practiced hard and Worked well together for an extremely spirited team effort. The AI.V. team was blessed with height and rebounding ability. lt also possessed some fine ball handlers. Coach Straub succeeded in playing almost the entire team in each ball game. This team experience will prove valuable to future Varsity squads. The basket- ball-minded students of Saugerties High will be watch- ing closely the progress of this years ,I.V. team. AIUNIOB HIGH BASKETBALL Coach Seither has done well this year in producing an exceptional junior High Basketball Team. His work is extremely important in Saugerties High cage hopes as he teaches his squad fundamentals and team effort. His players are products of the Biddy League which starts young boys playing basketball almost as soon as they can walk. The team seems to have that so-called basketball sense which Coach Smith looks for in Varsity ballplayers. The players see the open man and weak spots in the enemy defense. They also realize the importance of defense. In addition to this, the junior High five are strong off the backboards and possess great ball-handl- ing ability. They are fast and take advantage of fast break opportunities. Coach Seither has a smooth and well-rounded squad. l.El 'l' TO ltlCH'l': li. Nlc-Caig, Nl. Fury, C. Bourguinon, A. jaeobs, D. Ks-rin, li. Our first activity as a class was to elect officers. This done, we began to make prepar- ations for graduation. ln October group and individual pictures were taken for i'The Sawyer. Nlany of us ordered additional copies of our Senior pictures to give to classmates and friends. The name cards which we ordered we also exchanged with class members. The type of graduation announcements which we would send out in june were selected by us. After we were measured for caps and gowns, the problem arose of how we could raise money to pay for them. Instead of hav- ing the traditional Senior plays, we launched a pin-sell- ing drive. Each class member sold at least three school pins which consisted of the high school initials and the year of graduation. Another money-making project was the Senior Ball held in Nlay. This involved the work of choosing a theme. making decorations, and then of decorating the school gym. The theme of the ball, Out of This NYorld, lent itself quite well to the creative genius of some of our classmates. ln june came Regents, the junior-Senior picnic, and, finally, the night to which we had looked forward so lcmg-graduation. This evening brought mixed feelings of joy and sorrow: joy for having reached our goal, but sorrow as we said farewell to our carefree high school years. Our four years of high school have been filled with many memories. There have been moments of friendship and companionship which we will always cherish. Years from now we will forget any unpleasant events which may have occurred and will recall with pleasure the Wonder- ful days shared with classmates in Saugerties High School. 4 MARGARET A. Dear Advertiser . The rates for SAWYER advertising which are higher than for many other local advertising mediums, are justified for many reasons. If you are prompted to hesitate to take an advertisement, here are some reasons that will convince you that you are getting your money's worth with a SA WYER advertisement. 1. THE SA WYER is read 'by more people and for a longer pei iod of time than any other publication produced in Saugerties. 2. An advertisement in THE SAWYER is valuable to you not today, but tomor- row, next month, and next year. THE SAWYER is not thrown away. It is looked at again and again. - 3. THE SA WY ER is your best advertising medium for reaching the young people of the community - your customers. Probably more young people in Saugerties read THE SA WY ER than any other publication. 4. You are in good company when you advertise in THE SAWYER. Most of your business friends do. 5. It makes new friends and keeps old ones. It not only reaches the majority of homes in Saugerties, but also reaches the four corners of the earth. 6. Whatever helps 'the education of young people is worth supporting. THE SAWYER, among other things, is a year-to-year source of information and interest to many people besides students, for instance, prospective teachers, college appointment bureaus, prospective employers, people considering purchas- ing homes in Saugerties, and many, many others. Directly and indirectly all these people influence the education of Saugerties' young people. We do not ask for your advertisement as a gift, 'but assure you that it is a sound investment.
