Shad Fishin Early in the spring, shad fishermen up and down the shores of the Hudson begin to look forward to the running days which begin about April first and last for seven or eight weeks if the weather is suitable. Sturdy, sixty-foot, hickory poles are set in regular rows in the river, the better to snare the shad. However, the job is not easy, and it requires an experienced, steady man to guide a boat. One of our students, Frank Whitehead, a sophomore, will perhaps be one of these men, for he has been helping his father for several years dur- ing the shad season. It is of him, at Malden-on-Hudson, that the shad fishing pictures, found at the division pages, were taken. Although not as prominent an occupation as in the past, shad fishing is a symbol of the Hudson. Shad fishing is a business. Trout fishing and bass fishing are sports, and the streams near Saugerties afford some of the finest opportunities for good trout and bass fishing to be found in the eastern part of the United States. Another student, Walter Robinson, a senior, of whom other of the divi- sion pages were taken, shows us that he must have had quite a bit of experience, too!
