H . ---xxx I THE STUDENTS CDF SHS PRESENT T0 YOU THE 1947 SAWYER Greetings to 0ur Headers The students of Saugerties High School present to you the SAWYER in its twenty-thirol year of publi- cation. We hope you will enjoy perusing these pages and recognizing for yourselves various scenes in and about Saugerties. Perhaps one of your ancestors was a Palatine, whom We are featuring in this book, or per- haps you are familiar with shad or trout fishing. CFish- ing is our art theme! However that may be, We hope that you get as much enjoyment out of seeing, in a nut- shell, the school activities of 1947 as We had in portray- ing them for you. S all Qi l Lip ?. l ja X l x Fishing is our art theme this year. We chose it because it is one of the minor identification marks of the Saugerties community. Here, it is looked on by many as a sport, but, especially for the shad fisher- men, it is a business. Also, fishing is a sub- ject which lends itself very readily to art, and fish, in the drawings, may turn out to be your best friend, or even a teacher, South Sea islanders go fishing for pearlsg the Spanish go fishing for sardinesg men -of Newfoundland go fishing for mackerel. Will you join us as we go fishing for highlights of SHS? THE EDITORS Shad Fishin Early in the spring, shad fishermen up and down the shores of the Hudson begin to look forward to the running days which begin about April first and last for seven or eight weeks if the weather is suitable. Sturdy, sixty-foot, hickory poles are set in regular rows in the river, the better to snare the shad. However, the job is not easy, and it requires an experienced, steady man to guide a boat. One of our students, Frank Whitehead, a sophomore, will perhaps be one of these men, for he has been helping his father for several years dur- ing the shad season. It is of him, at Malden-on-Hudson, that the shad fishing pictures, found at the division pages, were taken. Although not as prominent an occupation as in the past, shad fishing is a symbol of the Hudson. Shad fishing is a business. Trout fishing and bass fishing are sports, and the streams near Saugerties afford some of the finest opportunities for good trout and bass fishing to be found in the eastern part of the United States. Another student, Walter Robinson, a senior, of whom other of the divi- sion pages were taken, shows us that he must have had quite a bit of experience, too! a A I n al. -L ...DAL JOYCE ELIZABETH FIERO Editor-in-Chief of THE SAWYER DR. A goodly number of summer bunga- lows are located along its shores. There are a few permanent residences there, too. Here during the summer days and thnoughout the long sum- mer evenings, large numbers of the native population, together with many visitors, find pleasure in boating, fishing and swimming. On the two following pages is recorded a drawing of the Esopus Creek from the point where it rises on Slide Mountain, fthe highest mountain in the Catskillsl, to the point where it flows into the Hudson River on the East side of the Village of Saugerties. One interesting fact about the Esopus is that its waters iiow north parallel with the Hudson River for a distance of some five miles. After these Esopus waters fall into the Hudson they then flow south again having c-overed a course of ten miles where five would ordinarily be enough. J ack Kerbert practices a dive into the Esopus. During the Sing, only French is spoken, and the traditional French creche is placed at the front of the room. Nearly every desk has a lighted candle, and, by this light, amid attractive Christmas decorations, the group sings French and Latin Christmas carols, listens to the Christmas story read in French, and hears various members 'of the group perform. The Sing is brought to a close by the serving of refreshments. Members of Fleur-de-Lis and Res Publica Romana listen to one of the numbers rendered by the music students at thc Candlelight Sing. From the Lower Palatinate of the Rhine, fleeing from a war in Germany, there came to this secti-on of the state in 1710 a group of people whio took an important part in the early settlement of this area. The Palatines, having previously sought shelter in England and New York, finally settled on the German Patent, or West Camp. Even before they had adequate housing, they had built, three months after their arrival, a chuirch and a school. Having found that farming on a small scale was unprofitable for the majority, many of the Palatines moved to Cherry Valley. However, thiose remaining here have contributed the names of Myer, Dederick, Hoffman, Wynkoop, and others to mark the presence of this heroic band. THE l CATSH .s My 5 S N Q .mx . Ella Hardesl Francis Myer e yer Farm The Myer farm on which the house on the opposite page is located has been in the family since the early 1700's. Christ- ian Myer fthe first man listed on the family tree on the pre- vious pagej was one of the original Palatines who settled about 6 miles from West Camp, at Mt. Marion and built his permanent home in 1724 on the north end of his land. Tobias Myer, his son, built the stone house, tpictureel on the opposite pagel after he was married and given land by his father, probably around 1760. Among the antiques in the house are a mahogany desk built around 1765, candle stands, spinning wheels, mahogany mirrors, and old china. The family has served in every war since America was founded. Lt. Tobias Myer served with his brothers in the American Revolution and how different his story must have been from that of Lt. Warren T. Myer, brother of Francis, who served with the 15th Air Force during the last war. Lt. Myer was shot down over the Poloesti Oil Fields in Roumania on May 18, 1944. He was captured by the Germans, later turned over to the Roumanian government and was kept in prison in Bucharest until Roumania surrendered to the Allies. After his liberation and return to America he was an Intelligence Oflicer in the Air Corps until the end of the war. What stories of Romance and History this old house might tell, for the story of the Myer family, like that of many other old families, is the story of America. . .PA vs S N. , as S AM! . As freshmen, we considered graduation eons away, yet, here we are-all eager to prove ourselves worthy of the training we li-ave received, but most of us very sorry to leave behind the site of so many good times and hard lessons. For the past four years we have learned much. Not all of the knowledge has been gained from books, for through the influence of our teachers, parents, and friends, we have developed the characters with which we will go through life. We appreciate the high standards of our school, and realize the advantages which we have gained from living under these standards. We know the potentialities for suc- cess that lie within us, and we are grateful to you who have made it possible for us to be here tonight. With the hope that Sanger-ties High School will be proud of us, its newest graduates, we welcome you, our parents, teachers, and friends to these Commence- ment Exercises. . ., VALEDICTORY .by BETTY CAHILL This night on which we are to be graduated is for all of us a most memorable one. It means, of course, the end of several years of work and fun and companion- ship. These years will be wonderful memories throughout our lives. And yet this night which means the -end of one phase of our lives marks the beginning of another. We are about to take our places as citizens of a nation and of a world. We shall attempt to do all we can to make this nation and this world a better place in which to live. We are grateful to you people who are here tonight for the background and preparation you have helped us acquire. Any attempt at verbal gratitude seems piti- fully meager but we hope that our actions, as we begin our adult lives, will be a credit to you and to this school which in a few minutes will be our Alma Mater. i CLASS POEM by ALBERT NEWGARDEN For eons Man has dreamt of realizing That empyreal realm of fantasy, Utopia, Which ancient bards depict by symbolizing As the land of overflowing Cornucopia. Utopia is tomorrow's famed security Achieved by honest labor, earnest toil, And those who'd have it bloom in their futurity Must first with sweat have fertilized the soil. The causeway to Utopla's paved with boulders Which signify the problems Man must master, He'll not conquer them without two massive shoulders- Education and Intent-without which looms Disaster. Tho such gain may seem to some 1-ike Sisyphus' task, It can be .had through zeal and concentration, And those who'd not tomorrow for assistance ask Today must spurn all tempting recreation. Today decides tomorrow, will it be A morrow lacking hardship and privatlon? Then work today with Titan energy That your morrow may surpass anticipation. 6 1 BARRY BRICE Vice-Presidellt VICTOR COOK Treasurel' JOHN ROBBINS Il9b1lI911t of Class of '47 .ni- MISS N.
