YJLLN.-2.1.-', ' ' 5 1 THE SAWYEII I945 Published By the Students of Silllg0l'ti0S High School A VWJA f W K N Greetings 10 You, 0lll' Readers We present to you the 1945 Sawyer. lilxcept for the year 1943, this is the twenty-first consecutive pulm- lication ol' this annual. tPul1lication was suspended that year due to lack oi' materialsj In these pages we try to give you a glimpse ot' the ac- tivities of the young men and women in Saugerties High Schoolftheir club life and their extra-class experiences such as sports, plays, debating, after-school relaxations, and the like. lloth last year and this year we have made a sincere effort to in- clude photographs of our young men and women who are now in the armed forces: some of our returning servicemen have told us that they carried last year's lzook into the foxholes of liurope and the islands of the South Seas. lf the possession of this book gives them just a hit ol' comfort, we shall feel well repaid for our efforts. We get a lot of fun out of fretting this hook out tor you. We hope P' bv you have as much fun in poring over its pages. -QL,L.L..f olll' Art Theme We are using dwarfs this year as our art theme-that doesn't mr an that we normally think of our students as dwarfed mentally or physically -it is rather that it gives us a chance to change them a hit. This experience of picturing some of our folks as dwarfs is a hit like playing with dolls. lt has the advantage of renewing our youth and enabling us to 1'enew the youth of some of our young folks. You will oli- serve that we have lengthened the noses on some of them and enlarged the :-ars. 'l'liere's fun in doing thatg after all, you know, we have to have an art theme--some medium through which we can express the ideas for our pages, and if, as we go along, add a lmit of humor in the doing, our pleasure is increased and we hope we haven't det1'acted from yours. lDon't let these dwarfs cut you down, belittle you, depreciate, shrink, or disparage you. yvlllllldllll Soldier Returns Jake Rogers, who graduated from Saugerties High School in tho Class of 1943, comes back to high school for a visit. .JM Jake is shown going up the old fa- niiliar walk to the High School Build- ing. MORE THAN BUCLES There is nothing very exciting about a foxhole full ol' ice water or even high explosive from shells or bombs. The only exciting things in the world are matters of high meaning. There have been some exciting mo- ments in the military history of the United States, but the long social his- tory oi' the United States is much more exciting and meaningful. ln that social history the progress of the American system of public education still remains for me the most dramatic story. The public school of the United States in its origin and development has been the greatest prac- tical instrument of free men in this hemisphere. ln the future the public school system will be a source of new concepts of freedom, a principal weapon in the never-ending battle against ignorance and ill-will. To in- crease the esteem in which the g1'eat enterprise of public education is held among our people is a task of tremendous responsibility and honor. While we work at little everyday jobs in education, let us always remain con- scious and proud of that great and exciting meaning of education. llight now, soldiers and battle heroics seem important. They are only as import- ant as they were always-important because they are necessary conse- quences ot' badly educated human groups. The crucial and transcendent task is better education of those groups. Perhaps this sounds common- place to you. To nie, about to see very soon my seventh major engagc- ment, it is the one belief which stirs my blood more than bugles . . . MAJOR HAROLD H. BENJAMIN, United States Army Air Forces. Now on military leave ot' absence from his position as dean of the School ol' Education, University ol' Marlyand. The first of these parties was held in the fall of 1942. Since then there has been one nearly every Friday evening when no other school activity was occurring. The Victory parties are open to all students of the township above the seventh grade. S. H. S. clubs act as hosts for these parties. Another social event of the year is the Hallowe'en party sponsored by the Junior Class. This has been an annual oc- currence for a number of years. W' mfg , CEB Saugerties High School plays quite a bit of soccer. lt is a better game than most people know. Our team has had considerable success. In the fall of 1943 they won four victories and suffered one defeat. Last fall, 1944, they won four victories, were defeated once, and tied three times. But the best part of this game is the playing of it. It makes for mental and physical keennessg it builds consciousness of the value of teamwork, and yields to each individual player a thrill in healthful out-of-door com- petition, all of which is made richer by good coaching, competition with neighboring schools, good refereeing, and playing to win. Dear Readers, On the following pages, we are proud to re- produce the photographs and snapshots of some of our young men and women who are now in the armed forces. There were 580 of them enrolled at the tin1e the photograph of our Service Flag was taken. Through many channels we urged parents and friends of our former high school stu- dents to furnish us with photographs. A large number responded and we thank them. A few were unable to do so for some reason or other. We did not willfully omit anyone's picture. Unavoid- ably we have been unable to indicate the advance in rank that some have enjoyed since the pictures were received by us. On the following pages we are proud to re- produce the photographs of twelve of our former students who have given their lives while enrolled in the service of our country. A thirteenth, Stan- ley Sehoonmaker, has given his life in the service since we Went to p1'ess. Their parents and friends have our deepest sympathy. With the young men themselves We rejoice in the nobility of their sacrifice. Tl HC IGI JITORS ISI I.l. HARRY GICURGIC IERINK 2lYlIl1.f Nli 27 4 - t A . SALUTATORY This year we are afforded a greater privilege in welcoming you to our eom- mencement exercises than any previous class. We are fortunate that our country has not been devastated by war so that any of you have been prevented from attending these exercises. Our nation has fought litany diilicult battles to protect this right. Now before us, the class of I9-45, stand the even greater battles of the post-war era. Our formula for winning these battles is in our motto: In ourselves the future lies. We are the citizens of tomorrow and we must make the greatest possible effort to build a fitting ami glorious future. We have been prepared land encouraged by our teachers, p-art-nts and friends, and non ix e feel that we are due to open the door of life step over the threshold 'ind 'td vance into the future. ,. . t 4' by MARY IGM IGHIITK VALEDICTORY Tonight, the class of ltlt5, trained for the problems ol' its life ahead, meets l'or the last time as a body. VVe say farewell to Olll' school life as ue prepare ourselves for the ditlieulties ol' the post-war world. Une of the primary problems ol' this world is that ot' aeliieving world peace. Any successful plan for world p-eaee must take into etmsideration every individual. Any plan th-at overlooks the individual is doomed to ultimate failure. We are thank- ful that our country leads the world in protecting every American and his rights. We are also thankful to our public schools and our churches for the parts they have had in making America what she is in this respect. We hope that we, as a younger gen- eration, may have a leading part in making America an even greater nation than she is by helping develop ia stronger interest in each individual. If we can do this, we feel that we can have a definite and important part in making world peace successful in coming years. Of equal concern to us are the national post-war problems. We wish to achieve an economic system under which everyone may have employment, 'l'he complica- tions of this problem are many, but if we can obtain this goal, America will continue to thrive and prosper. The problems of the community are an integral part of the problems of the eountry and the world. We wish to maintain all the industry of Saugerties on ti p-eace-time basis, while providing wholesome, constructive recreation for the young people of the comn1unity. In saying farewell to our school-life, we feel that if we are trained to take our part in international, national aml conununity life, our years in Saugerties Iligh School will indeed have prepared us for our future life. by DAVID SMITH CLASS POEM In ourselves, the future lies, Just. beyond the bend Ot' consciousness. 'I'omorrow's suns anew will rise To see us make an end Of childishness. In ourselves, they are contained The dreams, the hopes, the glory Of our years. In us must be the thought ingrained To mock the idle story Of all fears. It is there before us now: Our life to be is seen- Ahead it lies. To go ahead, we know not how, To do, not think or mean, Is ours. We rise. by EVELYN FLORIO mwesagfs W K x A viii? ,CSD N'iV Ww., ... 16 Maw W we e l, Coolciw 'l'l1vi'v's 21 sxvvelt littlv c-lie-rnh Illini sits np aloft. 2. lhnl Why shonhl lite- all ltznbm' be-'Z Zi. lim-liiv l,it'e- is onv lung giggle. The Sawyer goes into the majority of the homes of this community that have the most purchasing power. 2. The Sawyer is not looked at just once but is read many, many times. 3. Your advertisement in The Sawyeru makes friends for you not only with the older people in the community but with your future eus- tomers, the young people of today. 4. The people who read 'The Sawyeru in the very great majority of Cases have been and will continue to be your customers and patrons. The Sawyeru comes to you for an advertise- ment but once a year. Because of the high qual- ity of The SaWyer as an advertising medium, it is ahle to eommandait is justified in command- ing-a higher rate for its space than most other mediums. The Savvyert' does not Want your ad- vertising money as a gift. Advertising pays and an advertisement in The SaWyer properly Writ- ten will pay you larger returns than most other mediums.
