It marks the passing from our years of high school life with its trials and pleasures, studies and extra-cur- ricular activities into a world of new trials and pleasures, of hard work, and of war. We can never forget Saugerties High, nor can we ever fully repay those responsible for our presence and success here. And now, we face our new life and our new responsibilities fully confident that Saugerties High 'School has done more than its share in helping to make us useful citizens in a world where only real citizens can insure the continuation of the kind of life which we are privileged to be living now. VALEDICTORY The valedictory is our farewell to school life-to our friends, our teachers, and our interests here in Saugerties High School. Although we are now saying farewell, it is ironical that we should do so when in a larger sense, in a more significant sense, we are really taking our places for the first time to share with you the responsibilities of democratic life. The tasks facing us are not easy, and we realize they will mean sacrifice, concentration, and cooperation. At times these tasks may even appear too heavy, but there is a bright side to this picture. We are being graduated at a time when our country needs the most from us. It is our duty to contribute to the preserva- tion of those ideals and concepts, which we hold dear. A great challenge confronts these ideals, and we aspire to meet this challenge. As high school students, this is our farewell to you, but as citizens with civic responsibilities this is our real commence- ment of life. HYMN OF FREEDOM Onward, onward through the night, Marching, marching to the music of life, Marching to the resounding tones of joy and happiness, Marching through the death like discords of hate and arrogance! Upward, upward ln sharp crescendo, The songs of freedom and justice rise. Hear, hear the harsh unblended voices of the dictators, Crying out in frenzied protest, Crying out like ghouls from the pages of Dante, Crying out until their voices break, Break under the courage and valor of freemen. Louder and louder grow the voices, Louder, until they blend like the tones of a great organ, Deeper and deeper grows the melody, Deeper still until the throb of music shakes the world, Shakes the world from the bands of terror and hate, Shakes the world like the roar of a volcanog The roar of the voices of the Pole, the Czech, the Chinese, The roar that daily speeds the death of the ungodly, The roar that will crush these Frankenstein monsters, Crush them into the earth like the setting sun. Onward, onward through the night, Forward, forward into the light of freedom's path, Forward from the black plague of dictatorship, Surging onward, forward, into world freedom! IJLEWELLYN R.
