If you make your own goals adhere to your own values and choose your own kind of fun, you are living a life made by you. If other people are telling you what to do, or if you are copying other peoples ways or acting out a certain lifestyle to impress other people, you are living a life for other people rather than yourself, and it is so important to choose your own lifestyle, and not to let others choose it for you. This theme allowed some unusual possibilities for dress up days, and for hall decorations. Monday saw cowboys chasing indignant Injuns around the halls. There were flappers and W.W. II soldiers (20's-40's day), war protes- tors and love children (60's day). On Friday, there was the traditional Orange and Blue Day. The powder puff football game on Wednesday night was a muddy battle, which came out in favor pf the Sophomore-Junior team. The halls oozed with creativity. With a simple walk through the halls, one could visit a western saloon, experience the fun of a Roaring 20's Party, listen to a rock concert, as well as see into a glittering future. When all was said and done, a large, happy sigh rose from the people inside SHS. 11 ADMINISTRATION Wayne Kruger: Super- intendent, Thomas Novak: Principal, Rox- anne Gast: Counselor, and Board of Education: Janet Wolbrink - Pre- sident; Russell Wilken- son - Vice President; Jacqueline Veldhuis - Secretary; Frank Lamb - Trustee; Eugene Sneider - Trustee; Robert Chalice - Trus- tee. JOHN KUENZLI . . . NINE YEARS AT S.H.S In the summer of 1970, John Kuenzli left his home town teaching job in Oscoda, Michigan to come to Saugatuck and be the High School Principal. I don't think he ever really looked back. He loved the town, his new job, the people he worked with, and the students. He put his all into everything he did. I remember when they were working on the plans and the building of the new high school, all the extra time he spent at night going over things to make sure everything would be just right. In the summer of 1979 - almost a decade later - he left the town and people he loved to become the Business Manager in Manistee, Michigan. I know he misses all of you, and we miss him. The theme, Sayonara, was felt by everyone who attended. The Juniors decorated the Temple in an Oriental fashion to set the mood. The band, Westwood, from Saginaw-Bay City, did a super job of making it a very enjoyable evening. Many thanks for the hard work and effort put into it. 35 WCLCOHE TO 36 This years Seniors FINALLY decided that their destination for Senior Trip would be to New York City. The two hours to South Bend just flew right by, for everyone except Linda, who sacked out on the bus floor. We were filled with excitement as we boarded the train for our 18 hour journey to N.Y. City. Not many of us will ever forget the good points of Senior Trip . . . Calvin, . . . the diner in the hotel, . . . the off broadway play, . . . the pizza, . . . Frank locking himself and roommates out of his room,. . . the Toga parties,. . . Lynn triping over chairs, . . . the tours that nobody could believe they had to get up at 7:30 in the morning for . . . But most of all as you were just dozing off to sleep, Liz screaming in your ear, You don't sleep on Senior Trip. And not many of us did, thanks Liz! We'd also like to thank Mr. Bagierek, and Mr. Mrs. Gilman. We couldn't have done it without you. IT WAS GREAT!!! Paul Hillegonds told the class of 1980, during commencement ceremonies June 5th. He noted that as today's future, “we can help to form a saner, more just society if we will just roll up our sleeves and get to work. He observed that this is an age of limits, of uncertainty. Access to education is becoming more limited, and jobs are fewer. But it's not time to wring hands ... the good news is that you're well prepared for the trials ahead of you. Valedictorian Bill Winter said, it is time to put to work the input in our lives from those around us. We will learn to say thank you for skills which we were sure we'd never need or use when we learned them. Lynn Wick, Salutatorian, reminded everyone of all the times gone by, class trips, dances, bake sales, etc. Class President Kim Kittredge awarded past Principal John Kuenzli with a small token of the class appreciation. Mr. Kuenzli in turn praised Mrs. Tisdale as the mother with the largest group of kids in the area.” When all was said and done you could hear a sigh of relief and see tears of rejoicing as you walked through the line of graduates. 42 JUNIORS Troy Allen Tom Arnold Mark Arnold Mike Axman Chris Baker Ken Baker President - Sara Sneider, Vice Pres. - Sue Mason, Secretary - Lisa Krueger, Treasurer - Mary O'Brien Donna Davis Ray Debrook Keith DeWitt David Diepenhorst Donna Diepenhorst Sherry Dornan Mike Erlewein Karen Forester Mike Boyce Kevin Burkett John Campbell Phil Carper Steve Chadwick Tami Cobb Vicki Cook Gloria Corral [M2t Maree Baker Kevin Ball David Ballou Nancie Betz 44 Bruce Fries Beth Gardner Alan Gillis Creg Graves Robin Hall Andy Johnson Tony Johnson Sally Jones John Kelly Chris Klage Lisa Krueger Denise Manthey Andrew Mason Sue Mason Marta Mieras Lisa Miser Brenda Monroe Ken Morris Mary O'Brien Matt Peterson Joe Petrik Tom Phelps Lupita Ramos Robin Rank Steve Ressiguie Bruce Schock John Shashaguay 45 Jeff Slayer Sarah Sneider Dale Stark Walter Thias John VanDine Terry VanDis Rondi Wightman Terri Wilson James York 46 47 SOPHOMORES Tracey Fosdick Lance Gilliam 0 V 4£ Melvin Arnold Rodney Balmer Shari Barnhill Mark Bloomfield Sara Brown Tim Calvert David Church Frank Del Haye Dana Dooley Colleen Ferrell Brad Fiala Ted Flagel Class Officers; President: Laurie Nowak, Vice Pres: Janet Kasten, Sec.: Sue Siefert, Treas.: Ann Wentzell Don Hutchins Sue Jenson Lisa Jones Janet Kasten Dennis Klemm Randy Klifman David Krueger Chris Lane John Manifold Jude Manthey Betsy Marro Jay McDowell Karla Monroe Roy New 49 50 Laurie Nowak Lisa Nowak Kevin Phillips Darren Rees Amy Schmidt Chris Schoon Anne Schwerdt Jeff Seeback Sue Siefert Shannon Smith Brian Strom Matt Tiffany Todd VanWieren Lanora Wells Ann Wentzell Bill Wicks Jodi Wightman FRESHMEN 1 r President, Robin Gannon, Vice Pres., Andrew Doucette, Sec., Darcy Schreckengust, Treasurer, Linda Greene. This season, for the second season in a row, Lampen has led the Indians to back-to-back A-O League Championships and back-to-back season records of 8 wins and only 1 loss. On top of that, the cheerleaders worked hard selling team buttons, megaphones, T-shirts, and jerseys to buy a new set of uniforms! Something else new on the scene was a large megaphone purchased by the cheerleaders to be used by Donald Kasten - our first male cheerleader! They record- ed two victories during the season, but their record is misleading. Next year, coach Victor Mayer will have a lot of talent to work with to make it a successful season. Keep up the good work girls! VARSITY WINS COUNTLESS EXPERIENCE This year's Varsity basketball team provided the crowd with a lot of surprises! With the help of their new coach, Russ Doan, they started the season with a big bang, but regardless of all their hustle, fine spirit, and skill, they found it difficult to keep things together. Alth- ough their record says it was a losing season, it was really a matter of losing games and winning countless experience. Sue Jensen Andra Knechel Amy Schmidt Wendy Todd 70 OH THOSE SQUADS!! The Varsity basketball cheerleaders this year really stood out. They had new uniforms purchased just for them, and they did a good job at showing them off. Along with some super mounts, they performed a pom-pom dance routine to Rocky. Both squads also attended a Hope College cheerleading clinic. There they learned tumbling tricks, even higher mounts, two floor cheers, and a countless number of sideline chants. However that wasn't the end of the learning. With the help of Mr. Kurtzi, a Hope College Cheerleader, they've learned more about the mini-tramp and just basic good cheering. Many thanks go to these girls who have stuck together through the thick and thin of the basketball season, and many thanks from them for the support given by the community. 71 The SHS Gymnastic team was a young team this year consisting of all freshman except for two return- ing juniors. All the girls put forth 100% of their effort and ability throughout the season. They all had a lot of fun, learned many new things, and have set their sights high for a very successful season coming up. SHS GYMNASTICS YOUNG-AND-UP-AND-COMING Team members: Debbie Snyder, Lisa Krueger, Sarah Sneider, Stacey Crowder, Terri Wilson, Heidi Schlacks, Michelle Klimzak, Coach MaryAnn Stygstra. 73 This years tennis team finished the season with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses and placed second in the A-O League behind Fennville. The Indians won the league meet but suffered 2 close defeats to Fennville during the season which cost them the league championship. All-in-all they had a super season and with a lot of the good young talent they should be equally strong next year. The team will suffer the loss of all-around player Allison Phillips. Coach Gast says that if the team is willing to put in a lot of hard work and time next year should be a good season. We showed continued improvement throughout the season, quoted Coach Kevin Chipman. The baseball team played well during district play making it to the district finals against a superb West Michigan Christian team. The Varsity Baseball Team ended the season with a win-loss record of 8-11. Pitcher Bill Winter and 2nd baseman Ray DeBrooke were voted first team All-League in the A-O conference. Saugatuck High School was privileged to host two foreign exchange students this year. Edgar Fiddes, of Asuncion, Paraguay, stayed with the Holm's of Douglas. He was very happy at SHS and enjoyed the other students in his classes. Pirjo Viljanen, 17 year old Senior from Finland, found Saugatuck to be a nice vacation from the much stricter Finnish schools. She stayed with the Gardners of Saugatuck. Junior High This year started off quite nicely . . . lots of new plans. The Junior High Student Council sponsored a swimming party at Holland Community Pool. . . then we went to McDonalds for dinner. Fall sports included Girls basketball and Rock- et Football. We had four dances including one disc jockey dance. The winners of the dance contest were Patti Kelly, Sherri Mitts, Eileen Fuertes, Aimee Thomas, Brian Rutherford, Julie Greene. Boys basketball won the league cham- pionship. Track didn't do so well but they tried. While cleaning lockers the last day of school many people found things which had been sitting there since the first day of school . . . like unused no- tebooks and pencils. But alas the year was good.
