Mr. Kuenzli. 17 Homecoming this year was really some- thing to see. Our Bicentennial Theme Spirit of '76 really worked out great. All the class- es from grade 7-12 participated. We had Bi- centennial garbage cans, little soldier fire hydrants, and a variety of floats from a real horse to a rocket. But that wasn't all, it was the Spirit of the students mixed with the or- ganization of the teachers that really got it all together. We may have lost the game but the foot- ball team put up a good fight right to the very end. Half time was filled with the music of our band and the crowning of our Homecom- ing Queen; Sara French, and King: Jim Hutch- ins, and their court: llth-Mike Snowden, Karen Klaynik. 10th-Joe White, Vicki Blok. 9th-Robert Rank. Well, maybe it could have, but with all of the young and inexperienced players, it turned out to be better than expected. Only three seniors were on the ros- ter, with the sophomores making up the bulk of the team. We just didn’t have the experience and fitness to win the big ones! With a little more experience gained, the next few years should be the Injuns’ best. 26 “WORKS WELL TOGETHER” 27 . . . ‘ There we were in the locker room saying our usual prayer and trying to get fired up . . . then Mr. Lampen started on us . .. that took the cake. We went on the field ready to break some heads ... the players went wild and all of a sudden Hutch- ins broke out of the pack and ran for a touchdown. Everyone was out there on the field ... With only 3 seniors graduating, and the rest of the team sophomores and freshmen, the next 2 years will be dynamite! OFF AND RUNNING SHAZAMU The person at the left is Mike Jones. At this year's state meet, he did something no other athlete from Sauga- tuck has ever done. He broke a state rec- ord, and placed first! He became the State Class D champion in the High Hurdles. He also placed second in the Low Hurdles and anchored the sixth place mile relay team of Kyle Burkett. Steve Onken, Kirk DeWitt, and himself. s - To join the track team and be good at it. a person has to have all of the following qualities: a great amount of self-discipline, undying dedication, and competitive spirit. This year’s team had more than it’s share of these qualities, and should be applauded and praised for it. The people of Saugatuck should be proud of this group of fine young athletes! SHS JOCK-ETTES This year’s girls track team set 5 new school records, and also has team member. Karen Barcal, going to State for shot-put. Joey has also done a super job this year. SPORTS BANQUET ORR FINDS IT’S NICE TO BE FAMOUS A coach's life, though still harried, has become rather pleasant for Johnny Orr since his Uni- versity of Michigan team almost won the NCAA basketball championship and he was named College Coach of the Year. He outlined some of his experiences May 20 to 249 persons at the 12th Annual Sports Banquet put on by Saugatuck-Douglas Lions Club for the athletastof S.H.S. Orr said the biggest thrill of his life was participating in the NCAA finals this spring mS’hiladel- phia. You don't want to fail the state of Michigan. he said. At present time there are three players from his team trying out for the Olympic basketball team. Orr said that the University of Michigan is a super place and outlined some of the things he looks for in prospective basket- ball players. He wants kids who are quick-they can be made into basketball players. We find out that if they go to Sunday School they know what teamwork is about. And. he said, he likes to find good students. Many young people could qualify for free education through scholarships if it were not for downright laziness, he said. We tell our guys, do what you're capable of doing. Winners of awards at the 12 annual Saugatuck-Douglas Club Banquet for Saugatuck include: (from left) Mike Jones, most valuable player in track; Robin Schock, most valuable player in gift's basketball; Doug Forrester, voted most valuable for the second straight year in basketball; Jim Hutchins, MVP in football; Karen Barcal. A TRIP TO REMEMBER Meanwhile, back at the ranch. Off to town. TRAVERSE CITY AND PARK PLACE June Days to remember. Terrible Tom 89th COMMENCEMENT • • SAUGATUCK HIGH SCHOOL Graduation... the proper word for it is commencement. It is defined as a beginning ... but just as it is a beginning to a new life ahead, it is an ending. An ending to a life of studying, happy memories, good times and good friends, hard work, play, and cramming for exams. There was a time, in those 13 years of school that you thought would never come, and now. it's here. Graduation ... you start filing in, the march brings tears to your eyes ... and all the time a hundred and one things are rushing through your mind . . . you sit there in your cap and gown . . . butterflies in your stomach. Sadness, happiness, relief, excitement, anticipation, the rainy days, getting pushed in line for the cafeteria food, and even falling off the monkey bars in elementary school. As they start to call out the names, you look back on time ... remembering ... these kids you grew up with ... had fun with ... got in trouble with. As they hand you the diploma, and shake your hand you start to feel a little self satisfaction but mostly remembering a simple uncomplicated time ... a time you can never go back to. Perhaps the most impor- tant time of your life. Even the little things in life mean so much... graduation ... a beginning. Patti White CLASS MOTTO Spirit of ’76 PI ASS FLOWER CLASS COLORS White Carnation Light Blue and Dark Blue CLASS SPONSORS Mr. Tom Herrick Mrs. Mary Spruit 95 With sunny skies and near perfect weather 49 seniors were graduated from Saugatuck High School in cere- monies on the athletic field Wednes- day, June 9. The main address for the program was delivered by Dr. Donald Bourn a of the sociology department Western Michigan University. Commence- ment is a time to look back and a time to look ahead. The one most important challenge is to work hard for your own personal happiness and satisfaction, Bouma said. The graduates were presented by High School Principal.
