Certain events will be remembered others will just pass us by. .. . We’ve felt different this year perhaps because we’re changing everyday. . . . This year wasn’t just another game of addition and subtraction of feelings and ideas. It was a year filled with excitement. . . . What about our dreams and all the memories we share?” John Dpnnpr The theme for Homecoming 73 was Celebrate.” Homecoming ac- tivities began with the decoration of halls, and plans for Friday. Friday's fun started when the Cheerleaders presented the school with an in- spiring pep assembly. Later that night they sponsored a pep rally in the street downtown, followed by a snake dance, and finally a bon-fire. The classes each chose their representatives: for Prince and Princess, they were as follows; Freshman-Mark Bild and Sheila Carper, Sophomores-Barry Roper and Janie Wright, Juniors- Richard Klaynik and Tracy Acterhof. The Senior nominees for Queen and King were: Cheryl Coles, Vicki White, Susan Fincher, David Bekken, George Gendron, and Torben Orngreen. The winners were announced at Saturday s game; Queen. Cheryl Coles and King Torben Orngreen. The Injuns took home their first vic- tory of the season, beating the Fennville Blackhawks 18-12. The Student Council sponsored a Vic- tory Dance in the High School Gym, ending a day of excitement on the right note. Bandsmen Go To Camp The Saugatuck High School Band, under the direction of Bud Morse, worked hard on the funda- mentals of marching and preliminary preparation for half time shows presented in the fall. Forty-six mem- bers attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and began rehearsals immediately. The camp is located in Muskegon County. A typical day included six hours of marching drills and concert rehearsals. It was not all work, though, because the remainder of the day was spent in re- creation and evening ac- tivities. Mr. Morse said that, “The improvement of the band is very rapid, and this years marching band looks like it will be one of our best ever. In this sort of setting, the band was able to ac- complish as much as they normally achieve in a week. Besides, it was a lot of fun. 20 The Cadet Band The Cadet Band was busy this year participating in 3 Concerts, Tulip Time, and Memorial Day. They ac- complished a lot and they did a fine job. Rich Klaynik, Joe Bolles, George Gendron, Dennis Tisdale, Keith Aalderink. Coach: Wayne Fries. L This year's Varsity Basketball team had it's up and downs; the joy of beating Covert and the disappoint- ment of losing to St. Joe Seminary. Seeing outstanding playing ability made us realize how proud we are of our team. We owe a great deal of our success to two outstanding players Mike Baker and Dave Bekken. But this success could never have been made possible without the great amount of time and effort put forth by our Varsity Coach, Wayne Fries .... and with his help. Saugatuck put three men on the All-League team. They were Mike Baker, Ralph Troutman and Dave Bekken. Thanks Guys! J. Berry Roper, Coach: Ron Westrate. The J.V. almost broke even with wins and losses. They put forth a great deal of effort and showed us some of their skills and abilities. All in all they're something to be proud of: Next year they'll make up a fine Varsity Team. The Frustrated Freshmen Defeated maybe, but not their pride . ... the freshmen learn by trial and error and gain experience. FROSH: Robert Bolles. Do you think American kids have more or less freedom than you do in your country? Doris: You have a lot more freedom but I don't think the kids are using it well. I like their being able to make their own decis- ions though Claudia: You do. but we are more family people. I don't know where the advantage lies, do you? Torben: Kids here in America have more goods than in Europe, but we've got more freedom. Q. What's the difference between dating here and at home? Doris. The kids here have less inhibitions a- bout getting to know each other well, but they aren't such meaningful relationships as we have. Claudia We re still virgins, that explains all. Torben: You won't see kids in Europe dat- ing. because we can t drive. It makes it too difficult to take a girl out. O. What surprised you about most Amer- icans? Dons: The young people working and be- ing completely independent of their par- ents. We don't have that at all. In that way we stay kids much longer Claudia: Senior Trip Torben: Gina Boyce For ’74 Outgoing Male This year Jeff Shields is Sauga- tucks' only Sum- mer Exchange Stu- dent. The setting was a quiet, out of the way place, Leisure Acres . . . but it wasn't quiet for long because it was awakened by some fine music which was provided by Friends, a new but fantastic group. The high point of the night was the reading of the Prophecy by the Well Read Junior President. Joe Bekken . . . and the Will by the Senior President, Susan Brockington. A good laugh was provided from both. The Juniors really made it an evening by providing favors. Afterwards everyone made their rounds of parties which finished a memorable evening. 55 Senior Trip “74” Saugatuck's bathing beauties The 1974 Senior Class traveled to Manistee for 3 days of fun and games. Allegan Fair time. Homecoming, Coronation, all contributing to the vast memory of Saugatuck High. It takes but a moment to catch a look at the past ... to reflect on last years basketball games . . . only a moment to measure and apply . . . Hold fast that moment! But we must not look back . . . the life of our high school is more than a building, old or new . . . it is a complete assortment of involvement including trips to your locker, being a cheerleader or an athlete, enjoyment of a class lecture and receipt of tomorrows homework assignment. Don’t look back, something may be gaining on you. Altogether now . . . let's hear it for Saugatuck High. Let's excell, lets accomplish something . . . let's go on to our new school. Our faces reflect some sadness at leaving our old building but the hopes and excitement of a new Saugatuck High far outreach the past. Given an opportunity to grow and mature these faces will guide tomorrow's destinies.
