Missing, Mike Peel. It s quality, not quanity. that counts, and our golf team proved that this year. One of the many accomplishments of the remark- able six-man team was winning their own Saugatuck Invitational golf tourna- ment. Also, they finished fourth in the Grandville Invitational, and fourth in the Regional. The team came on strong this year, and will again next year as they will lose only one plaver, senior Mike Peel. 47 1st Row Left to Right: Dennis Bale, Fred Geerdink, Paul Wicks, Dave Nicks, Bruce Troutman, Jeff Busscher, Coach Wayne Fries, and Tom Edgcomb. 2nd Row: Rick Switzer. 3rd Row: Dave Mocini. 4th Row: Dave Demerest. Record: 14 Wins and 7 Losses. Varsity Basketball 71-72 This year's Varsity Team gained lots of valuable experi- ence which paid off when they won the DISTRICT CHAMPION- SHIP for SHS. During the year they were up against some pretty rough games, but finally, in the last game of the regular season, Saugatuck's Varsity got it together and knocked Fennville out of a tie for the league championship. We then went on to win districts, finally losing to Lake City in region- als. All in all, it was a great season for the Saugatuck Injuns. 49 Jr. Varsity Basketball 71-72 Left to Right: Richard Sands, Frank Biller, Jack Wilson, Dave Bekken, Dennis Tisdale, Ralph Troutman, Mike Baker, Bill McIntyre, Ray Sluis, Tom Hoffman, Mike Hutchins, Kim Slayer, and Coach Ron Westrate. ft x JUNIOR VARSITY BASKET- BALL RECORD: 13 Wins and 5 Losses. This year's JV's had everything it takes to make a great team. Fantastic re- bounding, shooting, a good bench, and real hustle power. Competition was rough, but they managed to pull through, defeating Covert on our home floor-one of many victories for the Injuns. It was a great year, and we're looking for- ward to these guys giving the Varsity team a real boostā€ next year! Freshman Basketball 71-72 This year's Frosh team faced a tough season, but their positive attitudes and determi- nation to win saw them through. Despite rough competition they came through with three vic- tories. These guys will make great basketball players in the years to come. 51 RECORD-O Wins and 9 Losses. Varsity Has Fine Season In '72 VARSITY BASEBALL The records may show a seven-to-seven score, but that is misleading...we had a fan- tastic team this year. The guys really knew what they were doing-and showed it when they knocked Fennville out of first place in the League, with a five to four win. There are some promising J.V.'s coming up, so Coach Lampen is sure to come up with a winning team next year. 56 Small Pictures, Above: Coach Lampen, Graduating Seniors, Right: Bruce Troutman, Below, Jeff Busscher, Pg. 57: Top: Rick Switzer, Below and Down, Bob Atman, Dave Demerest, and John Bekken. JV's Get Experience In 72 Valuable experience was gained by the JV Baseball Team, they worked hard and tried their best, but the score didn’t always turn in their favor. However, these guys should be an asset to the Var- sity Team next year. 58 Girls Basketball The girls had rather a slow year...playing only 4 games...but their morale was excellent...they had as much fun on the court as they did in practice. The performance was held in the S.H.S. gym and ran for two nights. The first play, Let's Make Up, starred Dave Demerest, Linda Boyce, Jack Wilkin and Luci Clark. They played four teenagers in the early 1950's with a common problem called understand- ing.ā€ The second play, starring Cathy Lewondowski, was called A Young Lady of Prop- erty. It was about a young girl who inherits some prop- erty and the problems she faces. The third play, Kissing Sweet, featured Bob Atman, Sandy Siska, Rick Switzer and Linda Boyce. This was a dif- ferent kind of comedy farce performed in an interesting way. 81 Jamaica Group A group, consisting of 32 Saugatuck Juniors and Sen- iors had a very busy spring vacation, spending their vaca- tion in sunny Jamaica. On ar- rival in Montego Bay, Sauga- tuck's own tourist colony settled at The Spanish House . Here they stayed for the duration of the trip, enjoy- ing various activities, such as: skin diving, snorkelling, horseback riding, sunbathing, and cycling. The kids will forever re- member the pool, the sun- burns, the Jamaican CONCOC- TIONS and slang, and the tours. These conducted tours were open to any of the group that wished to participate. They ranged in variety from climb- ing Ocho Rios' famous water falls, to moonlighting at one of Montego Bay's renowned night clubs - The Banana Boat . Appropriate music for the occasion was provided by the Eric Wendtlant Trio starting out slow and romantic, and ending up wild and vigorous. At 10:30 Ray Parrish and Dave Mocini read the prophecy, and the Seniors got a kick out of the zany things in store for them. The will was read by Rick Switzer, which left the Juniors some promising and not so promising things. Senior Trip After a 12 hour sleep on the bus, the Senior Class arrived in Gatlin- burg, Tenn. ready for 3 days of fun and sun in the Smoky Mountains. The pool was a popular place at Watson's Motel and everyone was thrown in at least once. The weather was rainy off and on but it did not ruin the numer- ous trips to town shopping, site-see- ing, or eating. Monday night the group gathered for a final dinner together. If the sleep down was a rest up for the good times in Gatlinburg, the trip home was a rest up for the extra-spe- cial good times as it was a quiet ride. Everyone will remember their Senior Trip in 1972. BACCALAUREATE Sixty-five seniors in caps and gowns attended All Saint's Episcopal Church, Sunday, June 4, for baccalaureate ser- vice at 8:00 P.M. Stephen Kolenic of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Douglas. The Rev. Stephen Tucker offered prayer and the entire service was under the direction of the Very Rev. Vern C. Hohl, rector of All Saints. CLASS FLOWER CLASS COLORS White Rose Red, White, and Blue CLASS SPONSORS Mrs. Candy Speet Mr. Ronald Westrate 95 GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE HASTE, REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. AS FAR A POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all per- sons. Speak your truth quietly clearly; and listen to others, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become yain bitter; for always there will be greater lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep inter- ested in your own career, however humblejit is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; :for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace ā– with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With alflits sham, drudgery, broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.
