THE COMPASS --A guide to our education The compass» rich in symbolism, basically signifies power to encircle, to give di- rection, measure distances, to grasp with the mind, and to interpret. All of these powers have become our heritage through education. The COMPASS will serve as your guide through the activities of the school year in much the same way the mariner's compass serves the seafaring man who navigates the waters of Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River when approaching Saugatuck. It is the aim of the COMPASS to present the entire program of studies, activities, and community services so designed to provide for many varied living experiences. There is something here for everyone: we read great literature, study history, civics, the story of man’s effort to control his environment. We experience the truth of science and mathematics, and enjoy music, speech, industrial arts. We learn languages and grow in our ability to speak and write our own. For education has not opened to us the doors of Truth and Knowledge by closing against us those of Falsehood and Error, but rather by teaching us to know truth, to possess It, and use It, to give direction against Error and Falsehood. Our minds, spirits, and bodies have been trained to meet the day when we must enter a career, a profession, or a vocation, prepared to carry on a successful living in peace- ful brotherhood with our fellowman-----knowing that our COMPASS has symbolized for us the distances we have gone, the directions we chose, interpreted, encircled, and made ready those things our minds needed to grasp and wanted to cherish forever. 2

TO THE SENIORS OF 1963 You have come to that day in June when you stand at your desks» gather the last of your books» papers and stuff and take a last look at the row of desks, your teacher's desk, and the blackboards. You have come to the end of twelve years--some of them longer than others, it seemed--of acquiring some learning. Day after day, week after week, you have toiled at your desks, and at home over your books. Weather was no impediment—rain or snow, hot or cold, you followed the usual course. Now you are graduates and have your diplomas. Ahead is a big world--very big to you. Some of you will go on to colleges and universities. Some will join parents in business. Some will go to work. And some will be married—maybe soon. The COMPASS is your record and legacy—pointing the directions of your own future. You expect it to be something of a guide for your coming years when, from time to time, you shall be returning to meet your class- mates and friends and try to re-live the days you are leaving--your happiest and most fruitful years. 3
