Teacher Feature Mr. Ilse enjoys challenging, joking In search of a captive audience for his jokes, Mr. Ilse decided going into teaching was the answer for the frustrated comedian in him. Both his parents were teachers, so the choice seemed logical. He had been teaching in Annandale, Minnesota, for ten years when he and his wife Barb, now a sixth grade teacher at SAIS-R, decided they wanted to try teaching overseas. Something that helped them choose Saudi Arabia was being snowed in three weekends in a row, unable to get out. In his classes, Mr. Ilse tries to challenge students to work close to their maximum academic potential. A poster on his wall advises, Do not pray for an easy life. Pray to be a strong person.” During his three years at SAIS-R, Mr. Ilse has taught almost every social studies course that has been offered, including U.S. History, world geography, and Middle East VVorld Problems. He also has served as department head for the past two years. Mr. Use's most embarrassing experience as a teacher here was with two Indian students in one of his classes. One of them did not respond to his questions, so he asked the other to translate all his lectures and questions for two class periods. Finally, Mr. Ilse realized that the quiet student was not having difficulty with the English language but was just shy. Mr. Ilse felt very foolish, to say the least, but chalks it up to the kind of experience one can have while teaching in an international school. That can only help him work close to his maximum in teaching potential.
