• • • Oasis ... a place to refresh An oasis is defined merely as a fertile or green area in an arid region.” Traditionally, Riyadh, with its numerous small date gardens, was considered an oasis in the Najd region of Saudi Arabia. Even in the process of its expansion and growth, the need for respite from seemingly endless sand and rock has not been forgotten. Treed boulevards divide the multi-land roads. 200 million Saudi riyals were spent on this project last year. But the growth available in Riyadh is more than plant vegetation. Riyadh has become a meeting place for the peoples of many countries. The children of many of these cultures come together each day within the walls of the Saudi Arabian International School-Riyadh. And the school has become another kind of an oasis. Opening 3

Mow a population approaching Vh million people spreads out in modem struc- build tures that cover more than 1,000 square kilometers.
