Preparing 'Pinafore' Scheduled to embark February 27. 1985, H.M.S. Pinafore was being heavily rehearsed in January. Before Mrs. Steele returned to the United States, she selected the cast. Mrs. Grant stepped in to provide direction and, particularly, to work on dialogue. She also planned the lighting and costumes. Mr. Elkins coached the singers, and Mr. Clay directed the instrumentalists. Choreography and much of the staging was the responsibility of Mrs. Elkins. One of the unusual features of the SAIS-R production was the casting of Kathy Dean in the comic role of Deadeye, a part normally played by a male. Lynctte Davies (top right) enjoys observing while Mrs. Grant gives David Boone and Karl Wittncbcl (top right) some suggestions. Pari of rehearsing is waiting. Christine Crouch, Erin Doyle, and Harris Dew display different moods as they wait. 60 Actlvitles
