Even in the process of its expansion and growth, the need for respite from seemingly endless sand and rock has not been forgotten. Treed boulevards divide the multi-land roads. 200 million Saudi riyals were spent on this project last year. But the growth available in Riyadh is more than plant vegetation. Riyadh has become a meeting place for the peoples of many countries. The children of many of these cultures come together each day within the walls of the Saudi Arabian International School-Riyadh. And the school has become another kind of an oasis. Opening 3 ... a place to Just 50 years ago, Riyadh was a maze of narrow streets and earth buildings that stretched less than 650 meters and housed only 20,000 citizens. Mow a population approaching Vh million people spreads out in modem struc- build tures that cover more than 1,000 square kilometers. But the traditions and the architecture of the past have not been forgotten. Buildings of past generations remain intact, and the most significant are being preserved as museums. 4 Openlng Modem shopping malls, like this one In the Olaya area (left) are cropping up throughout the city. They have not replaced the traditional souk areas, however. This road to Dammam (left) Is the longest precast elevated road In the world. Openlng 5 ... a place to assemble Because students live in private compounds and villas throughout the city, SAIS-R is the place to meet. This year students chose their friends from an enrollment of 2,536 from 47 nations. The five nations represented most were the United States, 53%; Canada, 14%; Great Britain, 4%; Pakistan, 4%; and Sweden, 3%. The 218 professional staff members came from ten countries. Muslim students totaled 516, 256 of which were U.S. or Canadian citizens. Elynor Givens' smile (top left) says she is friendly. Ann Prothro and hirst!n Staatcrman (above) share a curb. Mrs. Sibley (above) directs the Primary ln-termedlate Computer Lab, which contains 11 Apple lie computers ... a place to discover SAIS-R follows an enriched U.S. curriculum format that includes core and elective courses at all levels. Some modifications have been made to accommodate the multinational enrollment. Instruction in English as a Second Language is available in all grades. A trained professional staff — 91% have at least 7 years experience — implements the program. A variety of physical resources, including media centers, computer labs, and a fully air-conditioned multipurpose sport and activity facility provide for numerous innovations. 8 Openlng Art Is a course that Is enjoyed by students of all ages (above left). Mrs. Wentworth's classroom (above) shows signs of the varied fifth grade curriculum. Mrs. LoCascIo (left) provides musical training for second and third graders. Openlng 9 ... a place to play ho one can sit still inside all day long. Fortunately, SAIS-R provides a number of ways for students to burn up some excess energy. During lunch break and recess, children have a variety of playground equipment from which to choose. Physical Education classes provide training in team sports, as well as individual sports and rhythmic activities. After school activities, including Intra-Kingdom sports and exercise classes, round out students' chances to play. Junior high students (opposite top) use lunch break for a quick basketball game. Aden Daniel and Daniel Garcia (opposite led) demonstrate a playground favorite — the tire swing. Slnem Kiyak (opposite right) soars high on a playground swing. Beating slicks to the music helps these third graders develop rhythm. Opening 11 10006660 ... a place to grow Although students are likely to grow in stature while attending SAIS-R, they are even more likely to grow in other ways. At SAIS-R, the facilities, enrollment, and curriculum have grown over the past 22 years. Mew courses, such as mechanical drawing for junior high students and computer literacy for primary and intermediate students, reflect the attempt to meet students' changing needs. More than anything, though, as a result of attending an international school, students grow in understanding of other people and cultures — the value of which may be beyond measure. Intermediate nurse Mrs. Capllng measure fourth grader Aslm Tufall's changing stature (top left). Eight grader Erick Walchek (top right) concentrates on his project for mechanical drawing class. Mechanical drawing, taught by Mr. Tolliver, Is a new course offering for Junior high students this year (above). 12 Openlng Student Life Vahe Hawk Bartekian performs a windmill for the lunchtime Break-Off held October 6, 1934. Student Life 13 Tromping up and down stairs is a frequent activity for primary and intermediate students (right). Students from the primary and intermediate schools (below) move out at the sound of the bell. Nicole Gunderson and Dara Tilzey (below right) head for the buses after a tiring day. SAIS-R students rush for the buses. At the end of the school day comes the rush for the buses. Most of the 450 companies sending students to SAIS-R provide bus service. For others, private drivers and car pooling are necessary. But all rush when they hear the bell. 14 Student Life Katie Chambers (top left) has that Oh no. I forgot my lunch box look. Student Life 15 Students display preferences for all At SAIS-R, students wear their preferences on their sleeves ... and their T-shirts, lunch boxes, book bags, and notebooks. An unofficial survey of lunch boxes shows that primary and intermediate favorites include Cabbage Patch, Care Bears, Garfield, Hello Kitty, A-Team , Knight Rider, and Gremlins. And now and then, one can find a student doing homework. “No-footer indos are John Larsen 's specialty (above). Student Life 19 Eagle spirit binds all Despite ethnic and cultural differences, all SAIS-R junior high students have something in common — Eagle Spirit. Students had a chance to display this spirit at the first pep rally October 24, 1984. The cheerleaders, sponsored by Mrs. Watford and Mrs. Male, and the newly-organized Pep Club, under the direction of Mr. Greaves and Mr. Miller led the way. Student Council President riatalie Rawlings kept the program moving. The concert choir and advanced band offered selections to spur the girls and boys volleyball teams on to victory. Students from Arabic classes demonstrated many facets of the Arab cultures. One aspect of American culture — the good ole hot dog — was served and has become a tradition at SAIS-R fairs. The library provided books for sale, so students would have plenty of summertime reading. Live performances included a concert by a combined student community band. The fair represented the combined efforts of the Music Department, Art Department, Drama Department, Physical Education Departments, Library and Media Centers, Student Council, Junior Honor Society, Arabic sections, the homeroom teachers, and all the SAIS-R students. Obviously, she is not afraid to try something new. Her teaching career is evidence of that. She waited to go to college until her three children were old enough to stay home sick. How in her fourth year of teaching, Mrs. Gronemeyer has spent most of that time at SAIS-R. This year she taught two science classes, three math classes, and served as math department head and national Junior Honor Society sponsor. Mrs. Gronemeyer specialized in teaching in middle schools originally because that was the age of her children at that time, but she has found junior high students enjoyable. To her math students, she tried to stress that they have the ability to do math and it can be fun. She said a lot of students are scared of math. Working with a little levity, she showed them that math didn't have to be their worst subject. One sad piece of news she had to give her students this year was that her husband's work was finished and it was time for her to return to the United States. Mrs. Gronemeyer said she would miss this school and probably wouldn't find another like it. But she planned to follow her own advice to students to stop and smell the roses'' and look for the new opportunities for her in California. Junior High Fersonnel 93 Teacher Feature Mr. Ilse enjoys challenging, joking In search of a captive audience for his jokes, Mr. Ilse decided going into teaching was the answer for the frustrated comedian in him. Both his parents were teachers, so the choice seemed logical. He had been teaching in Annandale, Minnesota, for ten years when he and his wife Barb, now a sixth grade teacher at SAIS-R, decided they wanted to try teaching overseas. Something that helped them choose Saudi Arabia was being snowed in three weekends in a row, unable to get out. In his classes, Mr. Ilse tries to challenge students to work close to their maximum academic potential. A poster on his wall advises, Do not pray for an easy life. Pray to be a strong person.” During his three years at SAIS-R, Mr. Ilse has taught almost every social studies course that has been offered, including U.S. History, world geography, and Middle East VVorld Problems. He also has served as department head for the past two years. Mr. Use's most embarrassing experience as a teacher here was with two Indian students in one of his classes. One of them did not respond to his questions, so he asked the other to translate all his lectures and questions for two class periods. Finally, Mr. Ilse realized that the quiet student was not having difficulty with the English language but was just shy. Mr. Ilse felt very foolish, to say the least, but chalks it up to the kind of experience one can have while teaching in an international school. That can only help him work close to his maximum in teaching potential. Intermediate Academics Intermediate Academlcs 135 Courses give balance Intermediate students at SAIS-R receive a balance between the core-curriculum courses needed to progress in any area and co-curriculum courses to stimulate their other interests. Language arts, including creative writing, English, and spelling, is part of the core curriculum. Other components are math, natural science, reading, and social science. To enhance students' understanding, SAIS-R offers help with these core areas, as well as English as a Second Language and library support. halder All Khan, Valentina Mall, and Chris Amos (top) participate In a lively discussion In Mrs. Musgrove's class. Approximately 200 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders are involved in choirs that meet during recess. Those with instrumental interests can participate in fifth and sixth grade bands. The December 5 Winter Concert featured all groups. Fifth graders performed Amahl and the Might Visitors for all fifth grade classes. Robin Hood, a sixth grade production, was given January 21. Concert Band played in a Meet the Band” assembly for intermediate and primary schools on March 6. The Spring Concert and Fine Arts Fair involved all groups. Primary Classes 205 OASIS . . . Like a bedouin pausing at an oasis for refreshment a student's stay at SAIS-R may be just one brief stop in his or her travels. But for that time, the oasis called SAIS-R is home. When students are at home,” they have a sense of belonging. The pictures on these pages are not in the sections in which they belong. Without these people, however, SAIS-R, as we know it, would not be complete. May this remind us that although there are others not pictured in this book, without them all, SAIS-R would not be complete.
