THE JUNlOft HK3H students of RICS were fought In this 22 room vlllo from 1975 to 1977. This vWo wos In the Sulomonlyo District. Mony present students remember those old'' schools very well. 4 1963: The Americon Preporo-rory School is formed by porenrs for students from Kindergorten through third grode enrollment 7 1964: Ford Foundotjon forms school for students grode four through nine enrollment 18 1965: Two schools merge to form Riyadh Inrernotionol community School, o rented villo enrollment 33 1967: RICS opens in new villo to accommodate 121 students 1969: RICS opens os two seporote schools, boys ond girls, in mid Jonuary 1970: Fourth new site in six years open in Moloz District 1974: Officials foresee increase in enrollment to 400. Permanent facilities sought. Moloz overcrowded with 300 students 1975: Soudi government moves to provide lond. buildings ond the shoring of operational costs of foreign schools, enrollment 585 in four villas. 1976: Five additional villos leased to occommodore initial enrollment of 833 1977: RICS opens in schools provided by Ministry plus four villos for K-5 ond separate administrative villa 1978: First rime enrollment limited. Such contracts ore the reason most of us hove come to moke Saudi Arobio our temporary home. Militory ond health fociliries such os King Foisol Hospital hove also brought mony of us here. Large portions of the student body come from some of the larger project companies such os U.S. Corps of Engineers, Dell Canada, Soudi Arabian Notionol Guard, Lockheed Corporation, United States Military Training Mission, Joint Economic Commision Of Riyadh, McDonnell Douglas Corporation ond others. There is o sense of pride among students in the individual accomplishments of their companies ond in the superior facilities which they provide. MILITARY AND PARAMILITARY orgonlzotions ore helping to moke Soudi Arobio Into o modern norlon os it rokei irs pkxe among the more Influential countries of the world. The future of SAIS-R is very unpredictable in many woys. Yet since its humble beginning in 1963, there has been continuous advances in enrollment, facilities and educotionol standards. The mosr obvious addition to SAIS-R this year is the enclosemenr and air conditioning of the gymnasium, although many other exciting things hove olso been added. The acquisition of computers ond video equipment is on example of the school's resolve to keep up with educotionol tools ond systems. The library is continuously adding new volumes os well os oudio-visual hardware ond software. The present prediction is thot the SAIS-R student body will continue to grow for the next few years. Soon the embassies will be moving here from Jeddoh, bringing many new faces to our school. More city projects bring new people oil the time. As it hos done so in the post. Ask any Junior High student who has little or no grasp of the English Language when he or she arrived at SAISR. For six years she has given them the key to learning and broadening friendships by helping them master English as a Second Language. She has also in her spare time taught English to many Saudi students within the Kingdom. In addition to being mother of three children, she is an active woman in the community and has organized clothing drives for various charitable causes. The musical revolved oround characters experiencing some of rhe emotional ups ond downs of odolescents such os love ond insecurity. Many solos were performed including Suson Misrler’s rendition of It's All Right to Cry . The principol characters were double cost. Music for the show wos prerecorded so performers hod to be right on cue with dialogue, singing ond choreography. After practicing with plastic pins and rubber bolls, the fourth, fifth and sixth grade Physical Education Classes were given o chance to prove their skill In a real gome of bowling. In throwing events like sofrboll ond discus the boys scored significontly higher thon the girls. At the High Jump, Hurdles ond Running Long Jump the scores were extremely close. Although sixth graders domlnored the 1982 Elementary Field Doy, the going will be o little rougher os they become port of the junior high in the 1983 season. Mony students were just getting bock from long vocations of traveling ond home visits which mode them slightly reluctant ro ger bock on the school bus. Others were anxious to see their old friends, meet new people ond take on rhe challenge of o new grode level. As is the cose every school yeor. students found mony things different from how they hod left them In the spring: things thor would effect their academic ond social lives. The most obvious difference wos the “new oircondifioned gymnasium, no longer to be colled rhe covered oreo. It wos o welcome relief for the P.E. classes, not ro mention rhe P.E. staff who conducted dosses our in the sun. Next to the gym on entire new bus docking oreo hod been laid making it easier ond safer for children ro load ond unload. Other physical chonges Included badly needed music and storage rooms os well os redesigned offices. One of the biggest surprises this yeor wos the changing of the school name from Riyadh Inrernorionol Community School to Saudi Arobion International School Riyadh. For most it wos hord to get used ro or first. RICS wos eosy to soy ond it wos unique to rhe kingdom. Students found thor they would also hove to ger used ro alterations in their academic lives. Where students hod ortended six classes per doy on o rotating schedule, they would now hove to go to seven on o non rotating basis, although Individual class time wos reduced ro 45 minutes. Grode percentages were upped requiring 93% for on A. 83% for o D etc. Although some chonges were more popular than others, students soon adopted ond began wondering “What chonges will the future bring?”. 25 Whor hoppens when over 18 new sroff members con'r moke ir to school on opening doy? Mony students enrolled two or three weeks into the school yeor os vocorions extended into lore September. It is the norure of SAIS-R to hove mony students coming ond going throughout the course of the yeor, olrhough historically rorol enrollment gradually increoses until lore April or early Moy. One of the mosr common is shopping in rhe souqs. Here, great treasures con be found by the seasoned shopper, providing he or she hos mosrered rhe subtle ort of bargaining - Arab style. There ore souqs of every imoginoble commodity like rugs, gold, antiques, bedouin jewelry, comeros, audio equipment, silks ond women's wear. Lorge well stocked supermarkets ond deportment stores ore o favorite for the less adventurous shopper. Nor ore rhe outdoor types ot o loss for things to do. They hove comping, sond soiling, motocross, nature trips ond sporting leagues of every kind. For the discriminating diner, Riyadh hos restaurants of many exotic cuisines from European ond Oriental to fost food. Many clubs hove formed for people of different interests; square dancing, cooking, dromo, judo, arts ond crofts ond music. So for mosr there is no excuse for not hoving plenty to keep them busy, unless there is o rronsporrorion problem. However, private drivers ond compony busses do moke things accessible. SIBLEY helps the teom keep their LIKE A BLUR, this tost break was too much to handle for the Falcons, nor to mention the perspective on the gome ond concenrrore on photographer, teom effort. This year Mrs. Sibley held gymnastics classes as an extracurricular activity. Many young athletes participated ond developed their skills of bolonce. coordination and agility. Comparisons ore always difficult; however, or SAIS-R, I hove been extremely impressed with the excellent facilities, on outstanding instructional program, and o highly trained ond qualified staff.
