Apart from money and time, it is the most influential factor in our lives today. Television influences our opinions. It makes us laugh and cry; it informs us of today's events, and reminds of yesterday’s. YESTERDAY. That is the purpose of the Gator Network: to remind you of your high school years — the days when you were young and the world was yours to conquer. You may have wanted to become President or a rock star. Maybe you wanted to lead the life of a double agent, or maybe what you wanted was a decent job and a family. Kuiuad() f REMEMBER. Back then, along with your high hopes, you had high ideals. Do you remember when you wanted to rid the world of toxic waste? Do you remember when you wanted to end nuclear warfare and bring about worldwide peace and understanding? And then, of course, others of you may have wanted nothing more than a really kickin’ party. REMEMBER. Do you remember when your friends caught you doing homework on the weekend, and when you were grounded for spending the entire day at McDonalds’? Do you remember your first love, or truck (whichever the case may be)? REMEMBER. Do you remember the cafeteria food? Do you remember, “Do not admit the following students?” Do you remember when the teachers “let their hair down?” Opening 5 YESTERDAY Our network. Gator TV, wants to take you back in time to that wonderful world, your world, Satsuma High: 1988. Like all networks, we put our best shows on during prime time, from September to June. During this space of time, GTV has its normal programs as well as its specials such as Miss Satsuma and Homecoming. All this activity doesn't stop there. The crew is also busy doing our late night programming and weekend specials. We have one interesting game show coming up at the beginning of each new program. Watch for “Jeopardy.” And now, broadcasting live from Satsuma High School, deep in the heart of Satsuma, Alabama, it’s GTV! (In stereo where available) Opening 7 .ii sso .. cm The extracurricular events and activities at Satsuma High School captured the viewers' interests and let them be more than students. For many, these activities provided an outlet for tensions or just something to do for fun. Though the list was long and the dust never settled, the staff kept going and never failed to satisfy the viewers. The list of programs included variety shows such as Talent Show, Anything Goes, and the Fashion Show; and special productions, including local pageants such as Homecoming and Miss Satsuma. GTV's own Drama Department presented a play in true Broadway style. The Winter Formal and the Junior-Senior Prom were spin-offs of the original American Bandstand, with viewers donning gowns and tuxedos to party and socialize with true class. 1. Homecoming week began by student and faculty participation on the various dress-up days. On Thursday, the Homecoming Maids were given a tea, sponsored by the Student Council, and that afternoon was filled with excitement as the time for the parade drew near. Friday began with Senior skits given by the Senior football players and Varsity Cheerleaders. The rest of the day everyone anxiously waited for the game to begin. Kick-off! After the game, everyone headed for the gym for the big dance. The dance ended a week of fun, and created memories that would last a lifetime. 12 Homecoming Seniors: (Page 12, fop): Becky Nichols; DeWitt Baldwin; Lynn Price; Rod- ney Price; Leanne Harvill; Eddie Dees; Laura I,omax; Bruce Barnes; Jana Jemison; Kevin Butler; Lisa King; Sammie Sanders. Homecoming 17 Dimmed lights, new clothes, slow music, and the theme “Never Say Goodbye” made the 1986-87, Junior-Senior Prom a success. The Mobile Hilton was the setting for this event, as Mike Barnes provided the music, and Rodney Price, President of the Junior ('.lass, hosted the evening. The highlight was the crowning of Prom Queen and King. Debra Byrd and Gary Grantham received the honor. The Prom was eventually over, but memories of March 27, 1987, will remain forever. 18 Prom Prom 19 4t % ' Each spring the zany characters of SHS participate in their version of “Battle of the Network Stars.” But instead of stars, the participants are various class members and teachers. Every student cheers and yells for their “network” or class and has a good time watching their classmates making fools of themselves. 20 Anything Goes The Anything Goes contest of 1987 was held on the football field, which brought about some pretty “sticky” and “dirty” situations. Most of the participants ended up with egg on their faces or lying in the mud. The seniors of ’88 won the battle, but everyone had fun trying. Even the bosses who make our life at the network so “enlightening” had a good time getting into the action. Anything Goes 21 Every year at the SHS studio the senior class produces a show with dancers, singers, bands, and piano players. This “Amateur Hour raises money for the senior class while entertaining the student body. The competition was stiff, but a winner arose in each category. Robin Mott won the best singer; Lea Herndon won best dancer; Tammy Levins won best piano performance; and the group of Dewitt Baldwin, Bruce Barnes, Eric Randall, and Richard Roberts won the best band for the talent show of ’87. 22 Talent Show Talent Show 23 Excitement was in the air as the show began. We were about to be shown the year’s hottest fashions. As scene after scene passed, we drew closer to the Model of the Year competition, and speculation ran wild. At the finale, the winners and runners-up were announced. Second runners-up were Kelly Robinson and Ardell Rodgers; first runners-up were Tammy Terry and Bevan White; and Models of the Year were Jennifer Small and Sammie Sanders. A good end to the “Look of 88.” 24 Ai li 11 i« s This year’s play “David and Lisa” put on by the drama club took place in a typical American high school. The play was about a mentally disturbed boy and a young girl with a split personality. The story line follows them in their days at the high school. It depicts their problems and progress while under psychiatric care. The play was well put together. The drama club worked extremely hard to have the play go off as a blast. They received a well-earned round of applause at the end of their performance. 26 Activities Some of this year’s travelers ventured to Neustiff, Austria in February. Our adventuresome seniors spent ten days at the snowy mountain tops, speeding down icy slopes. They also took a Bavarian Castles Tour and side trips to Saltzburg, Austria and to the small medieval town of Sterzing, Italy. The chaperones for the trip were Ms. Mary Atchison and Mrs. Bonnie Hillman. Other travelers ventured to Washington, D.C. with Close-Up. During their week’s stay, they met with Alabama’s Senators and Representatives, spent time on Capitol Hill, and attended a Broadway show. One of the best parts of their week was meeting and mixing with teenagers from other parts of the United States. Sherrie Walker, Kristi Crenshaw, and David Blass. Our teachers displayed their idiocy” to humor the students, and to help raise money to send our softball team to the state play-offs. First place went to Ms. Floyd, Ms. S. Williams, Mrs. M. Bell, and Mrs. Tolbert for their lip-sync version of Janet Jackson's “Control,” while Coach Miller won Ms. Atchison's heart with his rendition of “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” 28 Gong Show This year’s Winter Formal on February 6, “Honestly,” was honestly special, as it was held on our big weekend, the weekend that it honestly snowed. The crowd was huge, with over 500 in attendance. Everyone was in the mood for an “honestly” great dance. Most said they had an honestly bad” time. Michael Andrews and Lynn Price were crowned Mr. and Miss Winter Formal. Runners-up were Michael Brewer and Lisa Aplin, and Carnell Saucier and Renae Grantham. 30 Activities I V)Lll' Me E' :• — vs’ Potential donors approached the room cautiously. No, there were no screams of agony, but maybe they should turn back anyway. Before they had a chance to reconsider, a person in camouflage ambushed them. They were rushed through a series of forms and into a room where people could be seen lying around. In the end. it wasn't so bad; and they got cookies and cokes, too. Activities 31 The night of the Miss Satsuma pageant was filled with excitement equaled only by the Miss America Contest. Adding to the drama of the event was the tea that the contestants attended the previous day, where they were entertained by the Tri-Hi-Y sweethearts. In the breaks between presentations of the class maids, the crowd was kept entertained with fine music and inspired dancing. Just as the tension became unbearable, the Senior maids were presented. As resplendent as new fallen snow, and as glittering and cool as ice, the maids gave new meaning to the theme, “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.” Top Right. Emcees: Glynis Hutcherson, Scott Smith. Miss Satsuma EATHER ALERT WEATHER ALERT WEATHER ALERT WEATHER ALERT,,. For your safety and convenience GTV is broadcasting this weather alert. High winds expected from parents because of low grade system on report cards. Hurricane Jack Tillman will be coming through later this year. Freezing temperatures expected in Ms. Atchison's room due to air conditioning malfunction, and rainy weather expected from seniors working on research papers. However, despite all the stormy weather ahead we will finally see “Farewell-ther” in the end. Weather Alert 33 Mosl of us easily related sports to television, simply because almost every imaginable type of sport was televised (to some extent) during the year. Comparable to awaiting the Superbowl, the World Series, or Wimbledon was the GTV viewer’s anticipation of coming challenges by rival teams. And once such an event began, viewers were kept “on the edges of their seats” wondering what would happen next in the unpredictable world of sports. Because games were unpredictable, “bloopers” occurred without warning (and were often the high points of the game). A sports team consisted not only of dedicated players, but also included the dedication and supportive coaches. The team members gave their all and did their best to make the team all-victorious. But having only a coach and a group of players left something to be desired. That “something” was spirit of the entire school. Sports and spirit go hand-in-hand. And no one can say that Satsuma High School has no spirit. Without such energetic support, sports would most likely turn dull and boring. So it was as much the viewer’s spirit and support as the player’s dedication that kept sports a big part of high school life. J! nnIPxny = ==■ == =■ = = = iri == = = = = 1. All of their hard work and practices paid off as they won superior ribbons in cheers, chants, dancing, stunts, and pyramids. Once again, they brought home the spirit stick. This year on GTV, Channel 10 featured our varsity cheerleaders in action at the Mobile Festival Center. In “The Battle of the High School Cheerleaders; they won first place against four other opponents bringing home $500 for their efforts. Throughout the year, the cheerleaders have worked to increase school spirit by cheering on the classes at pep-rallies and giving parties for the football and basketball players. Varsity Cheerleaders 3 Coordination and spirit is what really makes a J.V. cheerleader. The S.H.S. squad has captured the UCA title for three consecutive years. Though technical difficulties forced a Thursday special edition, the Gators continually showed spirit. The Gators lost the season opener 37-6 to McGill and then put up a double overtime fight against the state-ranked Foley Lions but lost 19-16. The Mary Montgomery Vikings then came to town and squeaked by in a 6-0 thriller. The Gators did not give up, though, after their slow start, as they then neat Baker 21-20 in overtime. This victory gave the Gators the coveted WABB Checkers Team of the Week Award. Shaw then came to town to take away our coveted prize, but we didn't give in with a 3-0 thriller victory. Fairhope then proceeded to pirate all of the Gator pride away with a 42-13 wipeout. The next week Gator Night became Thursday in a battle with the Warriors of Davidson; Davidson won the game 17-6. The next week brought a week of fun with Homecoming. Though the dance was great, the game was all Bay Minette; final score Tigers 28, Satsuma 0. B. C. Rain was the next opponent in the way, but the Gators again experienced defeat, this time 14-0. The season finale pitted archrivals against each other, the annual Vigor- Satsuma game had arrived. The ‘Lectron’ proved too much for the Gators to handle though as the Wolves defeated the Gators. The season was not a complete loss though as the team gained experience and displayed a “never say die” style all of their own. Topright: Bruce Barnes trudges forward. They hit hard, ran fast, and passed accurately — a most deadly combination against opponents. They will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to next year’s Friday Night Football. 46 |V Football Freshman Football 47 First Row: Sidney Price; Keith Gates; Jeff Smith; Ken McLeod; Chad Nelson; Ryan Gates; Kenny Hicks; Kenneth Montiel; Jody Sullivan; Jerry Me Raney. The freshman team displayed their super spirit, sportsmanship, and their undying will to win. They proved that they deserved to be promoted to PRIMETIME! = ■=• E E i s For the second year our SHS Lady Gators competed in the state softball championships, and for the second year, THEY WON! The girls played some tough games against strong competitors beating Pinson Valley and the Foley Lions. The Lady Gators even beat one team, the Bears, twice to remain State Champions. But our girls dominated and brought home the State trophy once again. It takes a lot of hard work and grueling hours of practice to excel at something. These girls and Coach Hicks were willing to sacrifice and put in that necessary time. They have truly earned the right to be called the Alabama State Softball Champions. Not only did they have an outstanding regular season with an overall record of 25 wins and 17 losses, they also had an outstanding tournament record of 12 wins and 8 losses. The girls “kept their cool” in tournament play when they had to beat BC Rain twice in the area tournament. They won with scores of 17-15, 11-15, and 15-5. They went on to outshine their opponents at substate where Bess Kilpatrick was named the Most Valuable Player in the tournament. At the State Tournament our gals showed the same pluck and spirit that has made them well-known throughout the state. They gave every team a run for their money, and we’re proud that they once again represented us at the state level. 50 Girls' Volleyball First Row: Marcus Austin; Jason Parker; fames O’Clair; Jeff Allen; Kirk Sullivan. Someone forgot to turn on the gravity. Gator basketball 1988 featured hard times and a lack of senior experience. This year’s team suffered through the first games, but gradually the team gained experience, ability, and the confidence needed to compete with any team around. Coach Fletcher’s team for this season was rebuilt with six juniors and five sophomores. The team’s star players were Kirk Sullivan and James O’Clair, and they always seemed to get the Gators into the scoring column just about every game. The year was, overall, pretty rocky, but this young team learned the necessities to become winners in the future. lames looks for someone to inbound to. Marcus takes a shot for a 3 pointer. I 4 This year’s JV team, short on experience, got off to a shaky start. But like all “pros,” they settled down later in the season and played some good, tough games. Under the supervision of Coach Donaldson, the team improved its basic skills, and began to hit those long shots. The dunks and the jump shots improved too, and by the end of the season they were lookin’ good and puttin' those two points on the scoreboard consistently. Coach Gartman worked with the team members on coordination, team work, and floor skills. They started out the season slowly; but as their skills improved, so did the scores. They showed lots of enthusiasm, and by the end of the season, they gave us reason for real pride in our freshman hoop men. First Row: Chad Nelson; Adrian Martin; Darius Johnson. Second Row: Amanda Bennett; I,aura I.ittle; Carolyi Smith; Tara Waller; Jenny Miller; Sharon Austin; Tammy Jackson; Coach Robinson. This year’s team was a young and running team made up primarily of underclassmen who worked hard on their basic skills. The season started out with a squeaker against Bay Minette with our Lady Gators losing by one point. The season continued with the girls sometimes playing brilliantly and sometimes not. They won a few squeakers of their own against Davidson 48-42 and Baker 52- 34. The girls got progressively better and ended up with a much improved team and a winning record. More than that, they were really ready and anxious to get started on next year. 56 Girls' Basketball Tammy shoots for two. Satsuma plays a tight game against Bay Minnette. Jenny Miller adds a point to Satsuma’s score. Bonita Waller shows her stuff in the scrimmage game. The crowd watches Tonya as she approaches the free throw line. Girls' Basketball 57 Satsuma baseball charged forward this year with many returning starters. Senior experience is always a help to any sports team and this year's baseball squad was no exception. This year’s big gunners on the mound were Steve Fuller and Eddie Sullivan, and Derrick Englehert and Ronald Semmes provided some excitement at the plate. The Satsuma Nine had fielding and hitting know-how in the likes of returning County All-Star Kevin Butler. The Gators had one minor disappointment this year, for they lost their long time head coach Rod Miller, but Mike Szymanski gladly took up the team and led them from victory to victory throughout the season. And, as always, the Satsuma Lady Gators had fun on the diamond. This year's ladies, coached by Pat Hicks, had another winning season led by seniors Bess, Patsy, Tracy, and Diana. Play in the infield sparkled with the double play combination of Marcy Nichols and Terri Chavis; not many balls got by them. The outfielders, too, caught everything in sight; they really covered the area. The Lady Gators combined fun on the field with winning ways and ended with their usual great season. The Lady Gators get some last minute in- structions. 60 Girls’ Softball Taci Langley waits for that next drive from home plate. “Practice makes perfect,” they say. Patsy Sandifer and Bess Kilpatrick come in from the field. Jeannie Miller keeps 'em laughin’ and loose. Coach Hicks keeps those stats. Tracy McAdams tends right field with skill. Girls' Softball 61 62 (V Baseball Satsuma's JV baseball team last year had one of its best seasons ever. They ended the regular season with a record of 12-1, losing only to Theodore by a score of 7-6. The team entered the championship series with great spirit and confidence. After beating Baker 4- 1, Satsuma faced McGill, who dominated the game up to the seventh inning when Karry Noble brought in three runs with a bloop single down the first base line. This forced tne game into an exciting extra inning. In the eighth and final inning, witn Charles Chitwood on second base, Howard Hill hit a triple into the gap, driving in the winning run. This year’s team coached by Mike Szymanski were the Mobile County champions. Roy Patton, Coach Ever wonder why they call running back and forth as fast as you can wind sprints? Coach Patton tries to get his “lads” into shape. A new sport entered into the GTV viewing area this year. The sports line-up was now complete with the inclusion of soccer under the expert leadership of former Irish League pro, Roy Patton. Had a student been asked about two years ago about soccer coming to Satsuma, they Crobably would have given a good laugh, ut this year there were some twenty students molded into a lean, mean, soccer machine. Though soccer is not yet considered a varsity sport, several exhibition matches were played. Given some time, Satsuma soccer is sure to become one of GTV’s most popular sports programs. Their hard work and determination, guided by the firm hand of Coach Annie Pettaway helped to prepare them both mentally and physically for the challenges ahead. From starting volley to final putaway, Satsuma tennis provided excitement unsurpassed by any other sport around. Through many days of long practice, each player developed a blistering serve, an astounding cross- court putaway, and a really overpowering overhead smash. Coach O’Neal Robinson provided his professional advice at each and every practice and guided the crew from match to match and from improvement to improvement. How about a nice game of doubles? Each club was a small independent network of people grouped according to special interests. Like a game show, a club was something to “tune in” to for fun, but certain things were expected of members. Each member was, of course, interested in the club’s particular programming. He or she should have been interested enough to become dedicated to the club’s activities. Also, as most everyone knows, dues were needed to keep the clubs active. But dues and duties became small aspects of “club life” when all the fun was considered. 1. How many clubs are (here at Satsuma High School? 2. Which club has been active at Satsuma the longest? 3. Which SHS club has the most members? Clubs 69 SCENE: MR. PRESIDENT TAKE: 33 It was a great year for “Mr. President,” a network tradition. Our student body government proved that not everything had to get tied up in red tape when they pulled Homecoming off witnout a hitch. Their proposals for no homework, and more liberal dress code failed, but the jproposal for a Senior Farewell Dance went with flying colors. Gator TV consisted of the Network Programming staff, who helped with special problems and kept viewers on schedule; the Production staff, who offered their time and support and tried to show the viewers the best way to go; and the “Crew,” which was divided according to specific jobs. Office workers held the control booth down to a dull roar and informed viewers about upcoming events. The Media Center kept the viewers “in tune” through modern technology. Local “substitutes for such famous women as Sara Lee, Betty Crocker, and Julia Child supplied the cafeteria with their versions of TV dinners. Last, but far from least, the maintenance engineers did the fine tuning at Satsuma High School by keeping halls and classes from becoming overloaded and blowing a fuse. 1. Faculty 127 illimi The production of a finely-tuned viewer took four years of hard and dedicated work. These four years were presented in “to-be-continued segments, beginning with the Freshman Year. Each year, the viewer came one step closer to that long-awaited graduation night. The Freshman Year was a pilot show that developed into a new series of episodes. The freshmen made their debut into a new and different world. Moving one step up to sophomore status gave them a sort of identity. The Sophomore Year was a sitcom, firmly established with a position and a name. Some sophomores became free- wheeling highwaymen with the addition of a driver's license. On to the Junior Year, a soap opera-like segment, in which the viewer finally saw the big picture. With graduation so close, many preparations had to be made. Class rings predicted a year of excitement and opened the doors to Prime Time. The Senior Year was known to most GTV viewers as Prime Time. It included an atmosphere of responsibility and fun, woven into one tight bundle. Prime Time was the viewer’s time to shine like the stars. This year also held special memories for viewers as they anticipated graduation and hoped that they could avoid going into syndication. 128 Classes 1. They stayed lost and confused for most of the year. They were the Baby Gators. They struggled through this “pilot series called the Freshman Year with unabiding faith and desperately tried to avoid being called Freshmen,” but couldn’t help “looking the part.” They wanted to prove to everyone (including themselves) that they could make it — no matter what. The Freshmen were in for a real treat as they entered Satsuma High School not knowing where any of their classes were or which hall to walk dowm, w'here to turn, or even what to ask. It seemed that the biggest problem Freshmen had was locating the lunchroom. The best way to spot a Freshman was to look for the little people carrying maps; but the fun of it was pointing them in the wrong direction. Here come ’I)e Freshmen. These Freshmen are ready to study. Kimberly Cothran Lisa Courtney Kyla Covington Jerome Cowart Clint Cox Tim Cox Amanda Crisler Dena Crocker Chris Crutcher Jason Culbreth Freshmen 133 One thing about Freshmen was they were never seen alone. This kept them from being harassed by upperclassmen who were always on the lookout for Baby Gators. The herd instinct found among ninth graders has given them an advantage at pep rallies, in the lunchroom, and walking down the hall. This may be caused by not having shed the months of middle school or the gut- wrenching fear of upperclassmen. They seemed to be joined like Siamese twins. But by the time they had been at SHS for a year, they separated and learned to survive on their own. Count them! One. Two, Three. Never alone. The Freshman Class outnumbered any of the other classes and was really noticeable at the pep rallies. They surprised us at how quickly they caught on to the way in which our pep rallies rvere conducted and responded well to “Let’s get fired up! and “What’s the good word?” Most of the class showed lots of school spirit during Homecoming week. The class of ’91 gave plenty of competition to the other classes by walking away with two spirit sticks as they proved to be the most enthusiastic class. The Freshmen outnumber every class. Being a Freshman entitled one to act differently from any other class in being as silly, obnoxious, and immature as possible. This year’s class was no different. We caught Freshmen everywhere making those mistakes that Freshmen always make. They wandered into the wrong classrooms; they showed up for third period when it was only second; called teachers by their wrong names, and wandered down the wrong hall. All in all. They wrere found peeking around corners, jumping out of trash cans, and even in the class room learning. After being Freshmen for a whole year of school, we’ve learned to survive and we’ve matured. When we were Freshmen we were the newest and the youngest, but during the summer we had time to look back and look ahead. Then we knew it was time to grow up and so we did. There was much more to face in the years ahead so we did an “about face” and marched on with new determination and self-assurance. We knew we were ready to face the world. This sophomore looks at the world close-up. These sophomores are determined to survive the day. Was it hard to fit in, but we finally did it! We finally managed to “go with the flow.” They always treated us as if we weren’t there; but we were. We were hard workers who were trying to cope with our sophomore year. And, boy, did we cope! We got on Mr. Green's “Do not not admit list.” We learned to be tardy to homeroom, and so we learned to clean up the cafeteria. We learned about retrac from first- hand experience, and some even learned about suspension. Yes, we finally learned to fit in. Just the two of us gals here. Hey! Hey! How do you like the Hair-Do? Sophomores — HOEY This year’s Hugh O’Brian winner was Brenda McMichael. Chosen by her sophomore teachers, Brenda was judged on academic excellence, leadership qualities, and ability to handle social situations. The leadership conference was held at Faulkner University in Montgomery where she had the opportunity to meet with business and industrial leaders in Alabama. One of the goals of this conference was to allow the delegates to learn about and discuss some of the problems facing both Alabama and the country. It was a real chance to try out new ideas and meet new people. Sophomores demonstrate their ability to read. Brenda McMichael. HOBY representative for SHS. I was now a mature human being, who could qualify as a contestant in the treacherous dating game. There was just one problem — not enough players! Where had all the eligible contestants gone? The ones that had approached me with the well-known question, “So, what are you doing this weekend?” had suddenly disappeared. Just as I was about to shave my head, the ultimate contestant approached me and gave me a belated “Happy Birthday!” I didn’t exactly win a prize, but it was a start! Satsuma High School would not have been the same without these tenth graders — there wouldn’t have been half as much excitement, and besides that, there would have had a lot fewer people! We burned the tires down while we jammed to the music; crashed a few bumpers while we backed into a parking spot and crept past stop signs and ran red lights, not mentioning the two or three speeding tickets we received. BLAH! Have you ever wondered what the purpose of a sophomore is? Sure, the term “sophomore” represents a tenth grade student, but it also represents a year full of Blah! We matured from being a Freshman only to find that we were not quite worthy of the privileges held by the juniors and Seniors. While the Freshmen were busy acting immature, and the Juniors and Seniors were busy with activities such as the Prom, Magazine Sales, and Graduation, the lonely sophomore sat on the sidelines. Buddy, can’t ya spare a dime? SATSUNOMICS I felt awful, and it broke my heart to do it, but I had no choice. I had scrimped and saved, but it hadn’t been enough. The high price of being a Senior had completely drained my bank account, and nad run my parents’ charge cards up to the limit. Nevertheless, it still seemed so drastic to betray an old friend like this. We had been together for so long, and, although it had been a completely one-sided relationship. (I gave and ne took). I felt that from now on there would be something missing in my life. It had to be done, my sponsors were hassling me to give them money (pennies, nickels, dimes, it didn’t matter). As I raised the hammer, I whispered a tearful farewell to my trusty old piggy bank. But we failed, both of them. We entered the “Night School Zone. Our pulse raced, our knees weakened, and we found ourselves on the floor begging. What we had just learned was we must work laboriously in the halls of crammed knowledge. Did Ms. Atchison have to assign the research paper? Was the semester final necessary? These and other questions remained unanswered throughout the dream until the next morning. The stoll and the cap and gown still hung in our room — another anxiety attack defeated. THOSE WE LEAVE BEHIND As we walked out of Satsuma High School for the last time, I wondered what it would be like 10 years from now. Mr. Shoquist would come over the intercom and state that the owner of a red, Gamma hovercraft had left his lights on. Mr. Greene would say any students found bringing Moon- Soda into the lunchroom would be dealt with administratively. Ms. Atchison and Mrs. V. Williams would be driving the Seniors to distraction. Somehow, as I left, I knew that no matter how much the world might change, Satsuma would always remain the same. Left you to face the urban jungles of office buildings and college campuses? Will you really wake up on time? Will you burn what's left of the cold pizza? If so, don’t worry, you’ve gone through pre-adult crisis. This condition lasts for only one or two months, or however long it takes for the world to shock the inevitable reality into you that there are no more two o’clock parties, no more all expense paid trips to the Gulf. This time it’s up to you to get to work on time to make the money to support yourself. Ahh, remember when you wanted to move out? That’s called post-adolescent stupidity. On February 11, 1987,1 asked Jesus to come into my heart for real! My whole life changed. As we all depart, and go our separate ways this year, always remember Jesus loves you, and wants your life. My name is Bo Freeman. When I was thirteen, I accepted Christ into my heart as my Savior. I can't say that I'm perfect now, but at least I know that I have wonderful and unconditional forgiveness and love from my Heavenly Father. I also take joy in the fact that I will spend eternity in Heaven. I don't deserve any of this, but I get it for free! Your life can also be changed. Once a day we were freed for half an hour to eat and talk and make our plans for the upcoming weekend or holiday. When these holidays came, we partied hard to make up for the hard w'ork we put in during the week. Now the year was almost over, and we were making plans for our summer vacations, jobs, or graduation, whichever the case may have been. The excitement was mounting, and the student body was going stir crazy. Even the Freshmen were developing Senioritis. The days seemed endless, but the time was drawing near. A lot was happening, and people everywhere were making news. HOMESTRETCH 252 Closing 4 THE WHITE ISLAND. OR PLACE OF THE BLEST ROBERT HERRICK In this world, the isle of dreams, While we sit by sorrow’s streams, Tears and terrors are our themes, Reciting; But when once from hence we fly, More and more approaching nigh Unto young eternity, Uniting In that white island, where Things are evermore sincere. Candor here and lustre there Delighting; There no monsters fancies shall Out of hell an horror call To create, or cause at all. Affrighting, Attending Pleasures, such as shall pursue Me immortalized, and you; And fresh joys, as never, too. Have ending. There in calm and cooling sleep We our eyes shall never steep. But eternal watch shall keep. Now, here’s your yearly news shakedown. Gary Hart made news with Donna Rice. Ollie North and Fawn Hall shredded papers. Jim Bakker was in the news with Jessica Hahn, and Tammy Faye cried. Morris the Cat ran for President. Reagan and Gorbachev took a step towards world peace, and there was a Presidential campaign. In local news, the Satsuma-Saraland merger fell through. A Wal-Mart was under construction, and some of us lost a close friend. The deaths of our good friends Mrs. Lula Taylor and Jeremy Brown brought us sadness, a little loneliness, and a realization of our own mortality. WlHu yuWH Closing 255 There was more news too. The Class of 1991 came on the scene, while the Class of 1988 took their bows. There were dances, activities, and hard work. On September 10, 1987, the year began; on December 17, 1987, the Juniors got their class rings; on February 5, 1988, it snowed; and on May 30, 1988, the Senior Class played to its conclusion. This program has been brought to you by GTV. See ya later.
