55EVDDV55EVDDV55 Satsuma High School Satsuma. Alabama Volume 30 Lee A. Shoquist. Principal Joanne Saunders. Sponsor Kristv McKenzie, Ediior An Odyssey is a long wandering journey into the unknown. It takes an adventuresome and individualistic person to embark on such a mission. There will be many perils to overcome and many decisions to make. A person may select the wrong road, may have to take detours, but if he keeps in his own mind’s eye that port he is seeking, in the end, his Odyssey will be a success. For our Satsuma ROTAG, the Odyssey takes on many forms. It is an unknown and maybe even a frightening quest through four years of long halls, difficult classes, and career y decisions. This Odyssey also takes on IGH SCHOOL the more enjoyable forms of sports, dances rallies, meetings, and partying. Each ROTAG chooses the route that will enable him to continue his Odys- sey. fulfilling his own fate— whatever it may be. O O. w For ROTAG, this Odyssey may lead to the stars, to a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, to new and strange worlds, to the cloud with a silver lining, or to an unknown destiny. Whatever his aim, ROTAG’s Odyssey will be filled with all the pitfalls and pleasures that any such voyage offers. HVPEPi ACTIVITIES An Odyssey is much easier to take if there are activities to get involved in to pass the time. ROTAG finds himself immersed in super sonic action while aboard the SHS. From parades to dances to traveling to strange new worlds, ROTAG fears naught, boldly going where no man has gone before, and becomes very active. From watching plays to watching lovely ladies, this Odyssey holds no boring moment. Of course, ROTAG keeps his priorities in order by studying first; but keeps his journey interesting by leaping new hurdles and finding new ways to have fun. These are a few of the favorite things that will make ROTAG’s Odyssey the most memorable one yet. First Runner-Up Tanya O’Rear, Second Runner-Up Bonnie Casey Margaret Moore Deana Stanley Homecoming week began with the annual tea for the maids given by the Student Council. The maids enjoyed cookies, cake, and punch. Following the tea was the parade. The parade consisted of many of the students’ cars decorated with school spirit, making the biggest homecoming parade in SHS school history. The pep rally was a great success with the students coming out in record numbers to get the team ready for the big game. Each class showed great spirit, but the Seniors showed the most, winning the spirit stick with tremendous pride. The cheerleaders, along with the senior football players, put everyone in the Homecoming mood when they presented a skit to the students before the pep rally. Everyone laughed and cheered at the skit and looked forward to the game the next night. V V, i ' The theme of the Homecoming Dance ’86 was “Masquerade”. The dance was decorated with skeletons, witches, black cats, and pum- pkins. The moon and the stars shone brightly as everyone gleemed in their costumes and masks. Anything Goes brought laughter to the gym last year as members of each class displayed their sportsmanship in front of the students. The rest of the students cheered their classes on and were thankful that they weren’t out on the gym floor. The seniors won, as usual, but the underclassmen gave them a run for their money. This had to be one of the best days of the entire year. The Lady Gators softball team won the privilege of going to the state championships last year in Gadsen. They went by virtue of being Mobile County Champs and represented Satsuma with great pride. To give the team a boost financially and psychologically, the teachers and cheerleaders put on a talent show and pep rally. The students found the talent show hilarious and ,the pep rally exciting. It must have worked though, as our Lady Gators came home as the 1986 State Champs! Left: Sisters Teresa and Gwen Howze win the trophy for best singing performance. Above: Tammy Levins wins the tTophy for best musical performance. Below: Keith Marks, Doug Richie, and Richard Roberts win the trophy for best band. Satsuma High School is filled with talent. Each year the talent is displayed in a show. Last year’s “Star Search” determined the best from the rest. From singers, dancers, bands, and pianists, the show was truly exciting. With such well-rounded students on board, the Starship soared to new heights. First Row: Gina Thurman, Ashley Phillips, Deana Stanley. Deisha Brown, Bell Whatley, Bonnie Casey, Shannon Craft. Scott Smith, Karey Clements, Lea Herndon, Amy McClure Every year Ms. Atchison takes a group of seniors to Europe. This year the group toured Switzerland, Ger- many and Austria. During the February trip, the travelers had some interesting experiences. They sampl- ed the local food, and at least one of the travelers got food poisoning. They also ran into some of the coldest weather Europe had seen in many years. As all travelers do, our SHS globetrotters packed too much, rushed to make trains and, without a doubt, had the best time of their lives. Washington D.C. This year she took a group of six juniors who traveled to Washington the first week of March along with other juniors and seniors from Mobile County. Once there, the ROTAGs paired up with students from around the country as they saw their government “close up” and learned their way around the nation’s Capitol. Along with their new friends from around the country, they sampled foreign foods, met Alabama’s Representatives, talked about the Iran arms crisis and attended a Broadway play— “by and large,” a busy and fun-filled week. Mrs. Sanders also takes an annual Close-Up trip to Marty Copeland and Lynn Price First Runners-Up Rodney Price and Christi Mitchell King And Queen Stacy Henderson and Renae Grantham Second Runners-Up F □ Pi m The theme of the 1987 Winter Formal was “Heaven In Your Eyes.” It was sponsored by the Jr. Civitan club as a money making project. The dance was a huge success, and everyone is look- ing forward to making the winter for- mal an annual event. The Media Teen Board presented a Spring Fashion Show to raise funds for the library. Under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Sierra the show was a success. The audience was entertained by the fashions and the models. Congratulations to the Board for a job well done. “Headlines” was the theme of the first 1987 fashion show. Junior and senior members of the Media Teen Board modeled the newest and most fashionable spring looks. During the show, Stacy Henderson and Kim Quimby were introduced as the Outstanding Male and Female Models of the year. They had been previously selected by a panel of judges. The proceeds from this year’s fashion show went toward buying a television for the library. Top Right Models of the Year: Stacy Henderson. Kim Quimby EDILTl ZD — XLJO-n The crew of the Starship SHS got a chance to break out of the regular routine to hear a rock concert given by the band Free Fare, which is one of eight different bands tour- ing the United States and Canada each year. This group of Christian musicians performed popular pop and rock selections and had a “Star Wars” skit with au- dience participation. After their performance, the band talked with the students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Certainly this year’s Odyssey was enhanced by the music of Free Fare. Vtkki Watson: Mayor of Satsuma Matt Cooper: Mayor of Creoia The purpose of Youth Appreciation was to acquaint the youth with their community government. Vikki Watson and Matt Cooper were elected mayors of Satsuma and Creoia by the Senior Class. They attended a luncheon at the Ramada Inn on November 12. They also took the places of Mayors Little and Moss for a day. Vikki and Matt were enriched and grateful for the opportunity to represent the Starship SHS in Youth Appreciation Week. They hoped the experience would enlighten ROTAG’s knowledge of political odysseys. Emma Pilgrim is the accompanist. Angie Boddie sings “The Greatest Love of All”. Darlene White writes the songs. Chris Pirkle and Robin Smith are the emcees for the night. The 1987 Miss Satsuma Pageant was one of the greatest galas of the galaxy. From the beginning, with the Senior Beauties’ por- trayal of women featured in hit songs, to the grand finale and the announcement of Miss Satsuma herself, the crowd was entertained all evening. After classic entertainment by several of the Starship’s students, the judges’ final decision was made and Miss Satsuma, 1987, was Miss Bonnie Casey. Her court included: Margaret Moore, first runner-up; Bell Whatley, second runner-up; Shannon Craft, Miss Congeniality; Christi Mitchell, Miss Photogenic; Laura Lomax, Junior Beauty; Melanie Woodall, Sophomore Beauty; and Leslie Norwood, Freshman Beauty. Aboard the SHS, sports is a vital part of life. Shooting, scoring, sliding, and spiking are just a small part of this enjoyment. Each stage of the Odyssey brings ROT AG in a dif- ferent uniform to combat enemies. From football and volleyball in the fall to basket- ball in the winter, the Odyssey of sports con- tinues through the school year to baseball and softball in the spring. From the team that wins a few games to the ones that win several games, the crew of the SHS always offers sportsmanship and an all out effort. With support from the crew of the SHS, the ship is rocked from side to side with spirit and enthusiasm whether the teams are defeated or victorious in battle. During the summer, while their friends were sunning their buns” at Gulf Shores, this dedicated group of girls were at the gym practicing from dawn til dusk. For the first time in years, the squad went to camp at Livingston University where they cheered and chanted” earning numerous blue rib- bons and the Spirit Stick. What with all the sprained ankles, sore muscles, short tempers, lost voices, and ban- daids. together with the feuds and fusses, the ’86-'87 Varsity Cheerleader year has been one to remember. So you wanna be a Cheerleader? Think so. huh? Being one is not easy. Ask any one of the 86-87 Varsity Cheerleaders, and they’ll say it’s fun and exciting, but it also takes up a lot of time. So. ya still wanna’ be a Cheerleader? What do you think of when you hear the word “cheerleader”? Short skirts and pom poms? There was a lot more to our Junior Varsity squad than that! To be a cheerleader on our J.V. squad, one need- ed plenty of talent and personality. The first step has been taken on the ex- citing journey of cheerleading. ROTAG has led the way for the junior varsity cheerleading squad by supporting the squad at camp last summer. The squad won the J.V. division at camp. They also placed first in the pom-pom division and came home with twelve superior ribbons. After all these accomplishments, it was not surprising that ROTAG also helped them bring home the Spirit Stick. a o o CL o I • -♦. «v .., - 'i' ; ’ ? - a Jfc! - a A A I 66 70 BO 34 g 7$ El SI • • V- 5. ® e- 10 23. 22 54 7 55 r r '' X “3 'V |V 6 11 ® dj 52 T 4B BB 65§50 . -W 7 7 - i77 j!l24jL? a.41jl8, 17i . 1 1P5 FIRST ROW: Dean Williams; Jamie Corley. This year proved to be a tough season as Satsuma’s young road warriors began their difficult Odyssey. The team played with perseverance and unified under the dual leadership of quarterbacks Eddie Dees and Rodney Price, this year’s Odyssey was a new road to travel as the coaches struggled with new. inexperienced players to establish a battlefront from which they could launch successful attacks. The strategy proved inef- fective the first three times out as Satsuma lost 21-0 to McGill-Toolen. 14 0 to Foley, and 22-14 to Mary Montgomery. But on the fourth attempt. ROTAG’s new attack plan proved successful as they defeated Baker 14-13 and then shocked Shaw 21-7. The next two games were close but ROTAG lost to Fairhope 20-16 and Davidson 6-0. ROTAG regrouped, however, and establish- ed a defensive battlefront to defeat Bay Minette 13-0. ROTAG launched their missiles again, but lost the last two games to B.C. Rain 28-7 and to Vigor 30-0. ROTAG showed bright stars on the horizon in Rodney Price, Adrian Pope and Eddie Dees. The JV Squad goes back to the field after a half time breather. After starting off with a great record of 2-1, the team downed Shaw 14-0, and tied Davidson because of a rain delay. Next, Satsuma took on McGill-Toolen and lost a close one, 7-6. 1986 JV Coach. Wade Gartman. The team plans its next offensive move. The offense returns to the field for its next series. The Freshman Football team, with the help of the stern leadership of coaches Donaldson and Fletcher, led ROTAG to a 4-3 season with wins against Baker, 18-8; Shaw, 19-0; Theodore, 22-21; and Davidson 9-0. However, ROT AG fell short in his last three attempts against Montgomery, 0-16; B.C. Rain, 7-8; and McGill 0-27. J] m m CD Ul DJ □ Tl □ □ ra The 1986 volleyball season was a strenuous, but successful year. The Lady Gators com- peted in many matches and even held an In- vitational of their own. In their first game of the season, the Lady Gators competed against McGill. The Lady Gators were defeated, but the loss of this game did not set a precedent for the year ahead. The girls were victorious in seventeen out of twenty-two county games, in which they competed against such teams as Murphy, J. T. Wright, and Baker. As a result of their achievements. ROTAG lost in the first round of the area tournament to B. C. Rain, but still had a final season record of 11-10. The team showed promise for future battles in the sophomores—Jeff Allen, James O’Clair, and Kirk Sullivan. As that first place trophy shines through the years, ROTAG will remember this great group of troops and this winning season. _u (U m rd CO ROTAG emerged on the scene this year to help the basketball team post a winning record for the first time in nearly ten years. This elite group of warriors were very ex- perienced as the entire lineup was compos- ed of seniors. Under the guidance of Coach Fletcher, the squad was led by center, Scott Parker; county scoring leader, William Woodard; defensive specialist, Tim Waller; sharpshooter, Tony Green; and quick point guard, Steven Waller. Coach O’Neil Robinson had only two returning starters from last year, so he had to establish a new line. He did just that. The Girls’ Basketball team fought like ex- perienced warriors though they were really young amazons. Young ROTAGs like Jenny Miller proved very valuable and the “old” ROTAGs like Angie Newman, Yvette Mar- tin and Rhonda Graham added the leadership. Through hard work, ROTAG maintained his usual winning record and exemplified the spirit of Satsuma. The girls went into the Area Three Regional Tournament as the first seed. They easily defeated Davidson 61-31 in the first game and sneaked past B. C. Rain in the second game 59-55. Rhonda Graham was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Angie Newman went to the All-Tournament Team. Our ROTAG girls were the Area Three Champions this year and went on to the state play-offs. PROJECT PEOPLE An Odyssey would simply be a long, ar- duous journey were it not for the every day diversions which it contains. ROTAG found himself confronted with activities from the minute the Starship SHS blasted off in September, until it made its glorious landing in June. From putting together yearbooks and newspapers to breaking down and deciphering math problems, no crew member of the SHS had time to be bored or complain about a lack of activities. From learning new languages and new games to showing off what he has learned, ROTAG always had something to occupy his time. With all of these diversions, it is surprising that ROTAG had time for his real purpose on this journey—to study and learn. However, with much hard work and dedica- tion, ROTAG got his job done and received the rewards of Project People. j 5tudEnt Council] “Take me to your leader,” said the Earthling, and she was lead before the Student Council. The Council’s function was to coordinate earth-space relations, and maintain the morale of the Starship. CaLjman At the end of the most remote hall of the Starship SHS, lay the black hole into which memories were drawn by an intense gravitational force. Here, they were sorted and put into order by the Chroniclers. Those cosmic beings placed into order the echoes of our pain, happiness, excitement, and worries. They built a time machine through which one could travel to the past, reliving the training and pre-flight tests necessary for embarking on the Odyssey. The Chroniclers were known to the crew of the starship as the CAYMAN staff. They were seen by many as secluded beings who worked on a “mystery wrapped in an enigma.” Even with deadlines too close together, events too far apart, the result of careful instruction by Chief Historian Joanne Saunders emerged from the Black Hole as a shining star reflecting the spirit of SHS. FT1E5DN CONTROL No Odyssey could be taken without some guidance from a central authority. This authority serves as friend and leader throughout the journey and is always there, like Big Brother, always watching you. Mis- sion Control advises the crew of the Starship SHS on personal, social, and economic af- fairs, influencing the lives of all it comes in contact with. This guidance is given to be us- ed not only while aboard the SHS, but to be carried on while on all other Odysseys of their lives. This “permanent” instruction will one day be cherished and greatly ap- preciated by ROTAG and his crew as they journey through life and apply this knowledge. LEE A. SHOQUIST PRINCIPAL Satsuma Hiqh Srbnnl MOBILE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM P O. BOX 487 SATSUMA. ALABAMA 36572 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE A famous writer believed that you can't go home again. Once something is over, it can never be recaptured in quite the same way. We will never be exactly that same person in that same situation. High school is not a place for regrets, not a place to let life slip by. It is a place where you can make life; for students are Satsuma's lifeblood. Be involved with your classmates. Participate in the school's many, varied activities. Never say that high school spirit is for someone else, because you and your classmates are the only reasons why our high school stands. Have a spirited and delightful year, and be sure to leave a part of yourself at Satsuma High School. □r. Victor Gaston fTlr. Paul GrEEnE Mr. Paul Greene’s voice can be heard during the morning announcements saying these ever-so- familiar words, “Do not admit the following students to class without written permission from the office.” But Mr. Greene’s primary function is that of a mediator between teachers’ disciplinary tactics and students’ problems. His care and con- cern for students acts as a cushion for the misunderstandings that may arise. He understands our students. He commented, “In my opinion, Satsuma High School students are the most refined, well-mannered, respectful students in all Mobile County Schools. They are second to none.” Although his disciplinary actions may seem harsh at first, students and parents alike agree that the students, in the end, understand his care and concern. Dr. Victor Gaston plays an important role at Sat- suma High School. He is the instructional specialist and with this job comes a special task. He can be seen entering a classroom, taking notes, and then exiting very quietly. By observing in this manner, the teachers, as well as the students are benefitted. Dr. Gaston feels it is an honor to work with Sat- suma students. He stated. “They are cooperative, friendly, and easy to work with. I appreciate the opportunity to work with such a fine group of young people.” His concerns for the education of the students are evident in his work. Guidance Satsuma students feel free to discuss problems with our guidance counselors. When a student has trouble selecting classes to prepare for the future, they may talk and receive advice. The guidance department also helps select the right subjects for the student. The counselors put extra time and ef- fort into making sure their job is done accurately. Mrs. Carolyn Owens commented, “My major con- cern is working with freshmen. I discuss their classes, let them know the graduation re- quirements. grading systems, and the different types of diplomas. I also discuss financial aid and scholarships with seniors.” Carolyn Owens; Carol Robinson; John Loden Mrs. Robinson writes off for transcripts. Mr. Loden counsels with Shane Morris on certain class choices. Vikki Watson. Shannon Craft, and Kim Quimby play with Mrs. Owens' pet spider. □ffiCE On entering Satsuma High School, one went by the office. There, they found courteous people willing to instruct them where to go. They also gave early dismissals for students. Dealing with so many students each day, the office workers show- ed great patience and care. Mrs. Milam, the school bookkeeper and “friend to all”, finds working with students intriguing. “I find it fulfilling to understand individuals. They have feelings just like I do. If you help them, they respect you.” This type of treatment makes “a visit to the office” more pleasant. - Mrs. McPherson takes a break from giving early dismissals. Mrs. Milam keeps records of the school’s business transactions. Mrs. Jackson, the registrar, poses for a picture. Sally Christian; Lane Jackson; Mary Milam; Pauline McPherson. English With the persisting need for communications at large today, an understanding of English is essen- tial in continuing environmental humanity. Teachers are finding it a struggle to teach each year. Mrs. Jeanette Greene said, “Faced each year with overcrowded classes and an overload of papers to grade, we English teachers bemoan our fate. Then, somehwere in some class, when we least expect it, we see the dawning of the light of understanding on the face of a student. (“Hey! So that’s a participle!’’ “I’ve always wondered what symbolism meant!”) This makes the struggle worth- while. We like to see students learn.” Ms. Atchison grades some of those “exciting” essays turned in- to her each week. Mrs. Taylor starts her day off with a smile. History Coach Donaldson lectures to his class Mrs. Saunders ‘‘dances’’ in the hall. The History Department helped the students to further their knowledge in the geographical and theological aspects of the country and the world. This department is designed to acquaint the students with civilization past and present. Students can be found discussing the geography of Asia or the economic system of Russia. One thing’s for certain, teachers feel that a good emotional background can influence students to become more interested. Mrs. Mattie Sullivan said, “These are some of the nicest young people. Their parents are doing an excellent job raising them. Right now, I would not trade it with any other school.” The History Department will always play an important part in our liberal educa- tion and historical knowledge. UlsthEmatics The growing demand for mathematicians is increasing steadily as the years go by. Certain mathematics courses at Satsuma. such as Algebra I. Algebra 11, Geometry, and Consumer Math could influence students to pursue certain careers. They also teach logical problem solving for later in life. Mrs. Barbara Galle was really impressed with her math students. “I feel the students were real friendly. I was surpris- ed at the academic ability of the students. They are very outgoing and intelligent.” With such professionalism in our teaching staff, it is no wonder we have a record number of honor graduates each year. e Front Annie Pettaway. Pat Hicks. The goal of the Physical Education Department was to stress the mental alertness which results from strenuous exercising. Each day, SHS students participated in calisthenics and various other sports. Boys participated in such sports as football, baseball, volleyball, and track. Girls par- ticipated in aerobics, tennis, volleyball, and softball. After talking with Mrs. Annie Pettaway we understood students’ enthusiasm to go to physical education. She said, “My main objective as a physical education teacher is to help the student become more healthy physically and mentally.” PhLjs. Ed. Library Satsuma’s library served many purposes for its student body. Most students were found in the library getting information for a research paper or selecting an interesting book. However, the library was not only for the “intellectual , but for the stu- dent who simply enjoys reading for pleasure. Our librarians helped in the success of our library. Their cooperation and organization made students, as well as visitors, feel welcome. Accor- ding to Mrs. Marion Etheridge, visitors are very impressed with our library. “When touring our school, other librarians commented on our library. They were astonished at its size and neatness, she said. Shown here is an unoccupied Satsuma library Ms. Smith helps students. For the scientifically curious students, there are a variety of subjects to choose from. They are Biology 1, Biology II, Chemistry, and Physical Science. The department seeks to contribute to the students’ scientific background. Mrs. Lomax said, “My main purpose as a Biology teacher is to pre- sent the material, have demonstrations, lab prac- tices, and activities to enhance that material.” Mr. Roy Patton, a new teacher at Satsuma High School, added, “The students are very friendly and eager to learn.” Business Opportunities in numerous fields of work awaited the person who took courses in business. The business department supplied fields of study in various voca- tional areas. Through their studies, students were able to decide on their fields of interest and were able to plan for further educational needs. The department encouraged the students’ emotional stability, right attitudes, and a sense of responsibility about themselves and others. They were also taught appropriate dress for the business environment. Mrs. Glenda Messina said, “Students at Satsuma High School are influenced by their peers in regard to fashions and styles. They are constantly in step with the latest styles in clothes and haricuts, so they will make a welcome addition to any business or office.” Top Left. I' Exceptional Education t M v rfct Success in every classroom depended largely upon the teacher. In exceptional education, the teachers put in an extra effort to ensure a good education for those special students. It was seldom realized the trials and adversities ex- perienced while working with these special students. The teachers who labored behind the scenes were faithful, yet unnoticed. According to one of our teachers, great pleasure was taken when helping these students. Mrs. Louise McVay said, “They are really great students. Their job centered around maintaining the cleanliness of our school. They vacuumed the carpet and picked up trash. The ef- forts were recognized when one entered our school. One would agree that in order to do the job efficiently they must have the support of students. The crew aboard the SHS is divided into four levels. These are: the lowest level which contains the Lost in Space; the second, the Extraterrestials; the third is made of the Moonies, and the highest level is the Space Cadets. The lowest level are lost in space and mere- ly trying to adjust to the new atmosphere. The Extraterrestials have made this adjust- ment and attempt to take on new respon- sibilities, such as piloting their own cruiser. The Moonies feel a new pride as they show off their experience through their rings and by putting on the Prom. The Space Cadets are the seasoned veterans—tried, tested, and proven to be the best of ROTAG’s crew. The crew, although divided into the four levels, are united in the Starship and stick together to accomplish their mission. If this unity starts to fall, Mission Control is always there with excellent guidance to get them back on course With this direction and an excellent crew, ROTAG is sure to succeed in all of his Odysseys. FreshmEn The lowest level of the Starship SHS con- tains the ‘‘Lost in Space,” who are merely trying to adjust to the new atmosphere. These newest members of the crew have no vital part aboard the Starship, but are sim- ply trying to get prepared for the rest of their Odyssey. Although they could usually be picked out of any crowd by their bewildered look, with help from the more experienced crew, those “Lost in Space” found their way about the corridors of the Starship and showed potential to survive the adventure. My mom drove me to the door ... I was so embarrass- ed. Then, my friend and I began to look for our homeroom. What luck! We found it on the first try! We opened the door and walked confidently in . . . into a room full of Seniors. I felt like such a Freshman. We finally found our homeroom and took our seats. We were given a mountain of forms and sent on to class. When lunch came, we wandered around the school look- ing for the lunchroom ... we never found it. When the day ended, we tried to leave, but couldn’t find a way out. We were stuck in school all weekend. Mon- day morning we were found by Mr. Greene who looked at us and laughed and sent us to homeroom. That after- noon after 6th period, a laughing Senior came up to us and said that he was supposed to show us how to get out. I felt like such a Freshman. GuidEbanh The following is an excerpt from the guidebook issued to all Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. One may identify a Freshman by looking for these characteristics: A) A perpetual lost or confused look. B) Rides the bus or comes to school with mother. C) Presence of a pacifier. D) Silly remarks and actions. E) Carries an assignment book in shirt pocket. F) Wears a sign saying, “I am a Freshman. The story ended right in the middle, and they they ex- pected us to answer questions about it. How could they?? • After a test, Mrs. Harbin would look at me and say, “I know you can do better than this.” She was right. I could do better than that if I could just concentrate on the test instead of wonder- ing what happened to the hero. All I wanted was an ending. Starla Holland Shelby Holloway Rhonda Hoven Darnell Hovey Misty Howard GoafLj It was the ultimate analogy. It fit perfectly. For months we had debated and racked our brains for just the right word. The proper adjective to apply, and now we not only had the perfect adjective, we had the perfect mascot, “Goofy”. The one word that would describe the Freshman class, the Class of 1990. This word described the way they acted, spoke, and looked. As we thought of this, we began to wonder. Is once Goofy always Goofy? If so, what will our futures be like? The answer, “Well, uh. They had this sad, lowly little look in their eyes that reminded me of a Bassett hound. Yes, I am speaking of the plight of the freshman boys. They had everything going against them. They were five-foot-two in a world of six footers. At every turn, they were taunted and teased, and worst of all, the girls. The girls wanted to date the upper classmen. The freshman boys were still traveling by pedal power, when everybody else had cars. The only bright spot in all of this tragedy was that it only lasted nine months. Then they became Sophomores, and it was time for a new group of pitiful freshmen boys to walk the halls and sit all alone. That didn’t happen and I had just heard those fateful words, “Your projects are due first thing tomorrow.’’ I hadn’t even started on one yet! Then I cruised down to the Golden Arches, bought a Big Mac, and let people admire me, my driver’s license, and my car. Finally I had to fight my way out of the admiring crowd and make my way home. I was cruising down Baker Road at a modest 60 miles per hour when I saw portents of a disaster . . . those flashing blue and white lights that spell every teenagers’ doom. Yes. It was the police. As the officer approached my car, I wondered if he would be investigating my murder after my parents found out. I tried everything . . . crying, bribing, and begging to talk him out of giving me a ticket; but, alas, it didn’t work. After that, I just sat at home thinking. Along with the good times came the realization that everything was for the last time, and soon we would all go our separate ways. Somehow we found time to participate in special activities and go the extra mile for those friends who made our high school years tolerable. We studied as much as was necessary, hoping it was enough. As graduation 1987 approached, quicker than we expected, we accepted the challenges of “growing up” and were ready to take on the world. As our last year came to its end, we took with us the many memories which made it, 1987, OUR SENIOR YEAR. The mo- ment we first boarded the SHS, we, the Space Cadets, were no more lost than the supposedly more experienced crew of the time. Until we left as the best the Starship had produced, we were admired and respected as the first to complete the entire mission aboard the SHS. Mr. Shoquist welcomed us all to the first Senior Class meeting for the Class of 1987. He then announced that we would be the first class of Satsuma to graduate on a Sunday night. No, Sunday, May 31, didn’t set too well with anyone, and students began mumbling among themselves that they were not going to graduate on Sunday night. Well, the very next week in homeroom, there was a letter sent out saying that graduation had been changed and would be held on June 1, but at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Well, that didn’t satisfy anyone either. We began to pout again because many of our friends worked and couldn’t get off to attend this very special moment in our lives. Once again a letter was sent out saying that Com- mencement would be Friday, June 5, at 8 o’clock, and that this would be the FINAL date. But that was OK because everyone was really satisfied this time. MICHELLE MCPHERSON FBLA 3.4; A B Honor Roll 3. The year that we were allowed to skip school for a day without the worry of parents or being added to Mr. Greene’s “Do Not Admit List”. That was the day we all loaded up and headed to Gulf Shores. We had the day to ourselves, and we forgot all the hassles of term papers and projects. We got up as early as possible for a day that did not include school, threw the essentials into a bag, and ran out the door. We picked up our friends, made a few more stops here and there, and were finally on our way. It was a terrific day! We created memories that would last a lifetime—a nice stop on our Odyssey. Chris Pirkle and Bonnie Casey, Boy’s and Qrl’s State. Responsibility. A word not often associated with us teenagers these days. Along with the rise in drug abuse and other social problems, we are often found at the very center of the problems. It is up to us, the class of 1987, to prove the skeptics wrong, by weighing the consequences against the pleasures of the moment. Only by taking responsibility for our actions can we ever hope to pull our world back into shape. It’s not up to you; it's not up to me; it’s up to us! The Class of '87 is the beginning! Homeroom Presidents, First Row: Darlene White; Shannon Longsdorf; Tracy Hayes; Rhonda Vernon. Second Row: Chris Pirkle; Joe McDonald; Andrew Breithaupt. BUDGET CONTROL No journey could ever be made without financial support from some outside source. Just as the space shuttle could not have left the ground without government allowances, ROTAG’s pictorial Odyssey through the 1986-87 school year could not have been possible without the help of the local patrons. These kind people donate their financial gifts in exchange for an eternal advertisement, to be remembered by all who look back to relive their best Odyssey. This sponsorship is greatly appreciated by ROTAG and his crew, and he hopes for con- tinued support in his future journeys. Angela . . . 93, 167 Remember 1987? The year that ROTAG led us to the future? Remember the pleasures and pitfalls our Odyssey incurred? The year 1987 was a special year. It was OUR year! Remember those dangling yellow signs in the rear of everyone’s car? They reflected the personalities of the owners—the hot shot whose ’vette displayed “Awesome”, the proud new parent’s station wagon with “Baby On Board”, and the one that expressed it for most of us, “Don’t Laugh, It’s Paid For”. Remember the major events such as Hands Across America, the Iran arms scandal, the flight of the Voyager and Alabama’s election of Guy Hunt, the first Republican elected as governor in 112 years? Remember the ma- jor games? Auburn rolled The Tide flat in the Iron Bowl, the South defeated the North in the ’87 version of the Civil War, and the New York Giants won the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos. Remember the fads—bobs, western boots, and sterling silver. The fun? MTV and movies occupied much of our time away from the Starship SHS. The Cave and con- certs such as Journey, FreeFare, David Lee Roth, Bon Jovi, Chicago, Alabama, and RATT provided ways for us to get away from it all. However, we always went back to the familiar—those long, one-way cor- ridors of the Starship, the all too familiar “Do Not Admit” list, and the Pledge. Upon the Starship, we observed the anniver saries of the Statue of Liberty, the United Way, the Constitution, Hollywood, and Coca-Cola. The year 1987 also broughJ forth the Starship’s 30th graduating class—the class of ’87. June 5th seemed to some of us the end oj our Odyssey; however, we soon found that upon graduation, we used what ROTAG had taught us. Our experience on board the Starship SHS broadened our horizons, leading us on to other Odysseys. As we look back, we remember our journey with ROTAG as our Best Odyssey—1987! 1. ••
