CAYMAN 1985 Lee A. Shoquist, Principal Joanne Richardson, Sponsor Carol Austin, Editor Debra Hancock, Editor SATSUMA HIGH SCHOOL SATSUMA, ALABAMA VOLUME 28 If a pebble is dropped into (be water, ripples begin to form and never cease. These circles start smull and grow in size. Our Jives follow the same pattern. As small children, we are faced with walk- ing, talking, and depending on our parents. As we begin to grow, we become involved in activities, liy our teen years, we enter high school to face greater problems. Whut classes to take? What clubs to join? Who to date? But most of all, we ask. What am I going to do with my life? Ily that lime, our parents realize that we are grown-up. They give us our independence, but on- ly within certain limits. We branch out into differnt fields, experimenting lo see whut is right for us. 2 Opening i 4 Opening A ■ SAT SUM A HIGH Like a wave, Satsuma High School Surging 'round our feet, Guide and train and teach us wisdom, Alma Mater sweet. Forward, forward. Alma Mater, Time and tide may fail. But our hearts will love thee ever. Almu Mater, Hail. • w r Ajk Mk , 'Mmrim 4 W £ V • l.mv« Opening 5 “A ripple, though it must lessen in the lapse of time and space, never quite reaches an end.” Once one accomplishes goals he has set for himself, he then begins to create his own ripples. These ripples not only help him. hut also expand to touch the lives of others. Knowledge is a factor in the future, for while everyone starts out the same, they soon Ixigin to develop at their own pace. And our exfierience gained at Satsuma, like the ripples in the time, expands in an ever increasing circle. Opening 7 Most rivers flow along smoothly, but in some cases, a river reaches a point where it begins to descend. This point of descention causes the river to spill over, and in spilling, a waterfall is created. The river plunges over the side carrying with it-everything in its path and creates a thing of beauty. The school year came after a summer of relaxation and descended upon us like a waterfall of excitement. Various events sometimes made our lives hectic, but without them, we would have been fac- ed with a year of boredom. As if caught up in a river that begins to descend, it was hard not to plunge into the many activities. And. like a waterfall increases a river's beauty, our lives were enhanc- ed by continuous involvement. Southern Charm at Its Crest Aurelia Green Donna Ramer As the rushing waves crashed into the seashore, so the fifty lovely Mobile Azalea Trail Maids swept through a busy 1984-85. The very height of personality, poise, beauty and academic excellence was reached in May at the coronation in |ulius T. Wright Auditorium. The very talented young ladies were selected to repre- sent Mobile as the city's Ambassadors of Southern Charm. As Satsuma High has a tradition of being the best , Brenna Casey was so honored Queen of the Court. Three friends and classmates were chosen to serve with her—Aurelia Green, Donna Ramer, and Debra Hancock. These four Satsuma senior elites have had a very exciting, rewarding year—the real joy being in each face of every person with whom they had the privilege to share a smile. salea TraiWueen v 1984-8 10 Azalea Trail Maids 1984 Homecoming Maids Lisa King Freshman Maid Kelly Robinson Freshman Maid Kellee Rambo Freshman Maid Christi Mitchell Sophomore Maid Margaret Moore Sophomore Maid 12 Homecoming Maids Deisha Brown Sophomore Maid Homecoming Maids Rhonda )ones Senior Maids Sparkle Kim Ellis Senior Maids 15 Spirit Surges at SHS Sophomores display Homecoming spirit during the Parade. Sponsored by the Student Council, this year's blood drive was a supreme achieve- ment, as it has been for the past several years. Once again we broke our goal by 17 pints. Originally set for 100 pints and because of the great participation we had, the Red Cross received 117 pints from Sat- suma. The Candy Stripers, who aided the Red Cross, made it an even greater success. Keith is drained, but not dead. Kim shows how it’s done. Candy Stripers show their skill in aiding the Red Cross. Students were elected by their fellow citizens to fill the positions of mayor and city council members. The students were made aware of the responsibilities and problems of run- ning a government. They were given the opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas with their real-life counterparts to the benefit of all. It is hoped that the members of Youth Appreciation came back with a better understanding of the way their city governments function. Councilmen of Satsuma Youth Appreciation 31 The water of the earth moves con- tinuously from the oceans to the air, to the land, and back to the oceans. This unending circulation of water is called the water cycle, and because of it, the majority of life on earth will never be lacking in water. The school year brought us another kind of cycle. As the seasons changed, they carried with them a different sport. Autumn gave us football. Winter gave us basketball, and with Spring came baseball, softball, and tennis. The cycle of sports at Satsuma was as continuous and dependable as the water cycle, and because of it, we were never lacking in excitement. We’ve Got Spirit v : mr -m r: 34 Varsity Cheerleaders • • Yes We Do! The 1984-85 Varsity Cheerleaders ex- emplified the true spirit of SHS. They represented SHS at a clinic sponsored by the National Cheerleading Associa- tion at the University of South Alabama where they received superior ribbons. In addition to this, they were nominated for the Award of Excellence. Throughout the year, the cheerleaders kept spirits flowing with pep rallies, and victory dances which proved to be a great success. Varsity Cheerleaders 35 We’ve Got Spirit It took personality, energy, friendliness and real showmanship to make it as a cheerleader. That is just what the 1984- 85 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders had. They were the best at what they did. To prove it, they attended the Dynamic Cheerleading Association and left with two first place ribbons and a first place trophy for best overall performance. The JV Cheerleaders have definitely ex- emplified part of the spirit that is so characteristic of Satsuma students. J V Cheerleaders show off their winning form. It was evident that the Gators were determined to improve on last year’s unusually low 3-8 record. The long practices and determination paid off as the Gators came from behind time after time to defeat their opponents late in the game. Such exciting finishes had Gator fans on their feet week after week, and ended in a 7-3 season. Varsity Football 39 Defense Stops Foes Wade Ward makes the catch. The Gators opened the season against the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets and came out with an impressive win. The next week they traveled to B.C. Keith Warren prepares to return the punt. The Gators finally met defeat against the Baker Hornets and lost by one point. The team bounced back with another win against Mary Montgomery. The Gators met defeat once more against Fairhope, and then traveled to Atmore where they broke the Blue Devils' eighteen game winning streak. When Homecoming arrived on the nineteenth of October the stands were full and the Gators gave their fans something to cheer about once more. The Gators pulled ahead to a one point lead with 47 seconds left in the game and won it. The Gators then defeated Bay Minette the next week in a triple overtime thriller which clinched a spot in the State Playoffs. The Gators ended their winning season against the tough Vigor Wolves. During the second game of the season, the Gators had shut out the Red Raiders 7-0. This time, however, the Red Raiders could do no wrong as they blanked the Gators 30-0. Despite the loss in the opening playoff game, the Gators had many players who received player of the week including three-time win- ner Rusty Reed, Artie Hicks, Chad Lowe, and Jeff Miller. The 1984-85 Junior Varsity football team, under the leadership of Coaches Wade Gartman and Eddie Gibbs, managed to have an outstanding season. Coming off a 7-0 record the team managed to keep up the winning tradi- tion by having a 4-1 season. The only loss the JV team suffered came from the Murphy Panthers. But after this loss, the team came on strong to win their last two games. All in all, the Junior Varsity players will provide good material for Coach Coleman's Varsity team next year. Coach Robinson began emphasizing high percentage shots to ensure victory. During practice and games, the girls heard him yell, “SHOOT THE BALL! time and time again. All of the forms are different, yet essentially they are the same thing. Clubs were an important part of many students' lives. All of the clubs were basically the same, only different in that they existed in many forms. Each club, whether it was social or academic, had the purpose of catering to the needs and tastes of a certain group of students. The well-trained staff took the students step-by-step through time and provided them with the ability to grasp the workings of both the ancient and modern world. MA Kaye Breland Lamar U., BA The math department’s objectives were to give students a broad view of the field of mathematics, provide information and skills most likely to be useful to them in their vocational pursuit, as well as demonstrate the relevance of mathematics in everyday life. The mathematics courses offered at SHS ranged from general mathematics to analysis. This year the math department has pro- video more opportunities for students to enhance their mathematical abilities. Teams have been developed to par- ticipate in local math competitions, a math club was organized, and a tutoring program was developed for any student enrolled in a math course. 114 Math Department Algebra II Team First Row: Bryon Waltman; Dewayne Pope: Darin Geiger: Carey Dean. Courses were offered that helped pupils develop skills they would need after graduation. Students enrolled in the vocational education classes were given instruction in five basic areas: mathematics, English, job skills, and science. Mrs. Lang, Mrs. McVay, and Mr. Bolden were teachers of these classes. 116 Special Ed Electives Storm Ahead The elective courses of SHS are made up of Driver's Ed.t Home Economics, ROTC, Band, and Gifted. Taking pride ip the cleanliness of the campus and the efficiency with which the custodial systems were run was the janitorial staff. Among the many tasks performed by the cafeteria workers were the preparing and serving of hot lunches and the daily care of the lunchroom, while transportation of a large percentage of the students and their respective neighborhoods was the concern of the bus drivers. Support Staff 123 f 1,0, commonly referred to as water, consists of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Without any one part, the mixture would not be complete, and one of the most vital ingredients necessary to sustain life would be absent. Water—so simple in form, yet so important to a complex system of living things. At Satsuma, we had our own mixture of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Each class was unique in that it added an important element to the structure of everyday high school life. Together they formed the student body of Satsuma, a complex system of in- dividuals. The absence of any one class would create a break in the waves. Therefore, each class was necessary for the continuity of Satsuma life. Seniors Ripples never cease. They only become larger. The Senior Class began to realize this fact as they began to have their first taste of what the future had in store. It had been four years since they had taken that first plunge as freshmen, and it seemed as if a part of their lives was slowly drawing to a close and ceasing to exist; yet, that tvas hardly the case. While their high school ac- complishments were soon to be left behind, the memories would remain, laying the foundation for future dreams. Like ripples they became, never turning back, only growing larger to encompass other horizons. I, Trece Williams A wave has its source, a waterfall has its point of descention, and life without water would be nonexistent. There are not many things that are totally self- sufficient. There is always something that is necessary for the well-being of another. The composition of a yearbook is dependent upon a number of things. One of the important things needed is the students who provide memories and events ready to be captured forever within- the pages. Next, there is the dedication of those who are responsible for preserving those memories. Finally, and possibly the most important thing necessary for a yearbook is the adver- tisements. Without them, the yearbook would be nonexistent. Therefore, the survival of a yearbook lies within the hands of its patrons. THE NORTHSIDE CLINICS DRS. SUTTON NEWMAN, P.C.
