Photography Class Joins Annual Staff Hard work is often rewarded. In the case of photography class, they deserve a very special thanks. Most people don't realize that two people and an advisor put out this annual. The photography class joined us this year to help relieve the burden. All of the pictures in this annual were taken by Mr. McGowan and his photography class, with the exception of some senior pictures and the class portrait shots. We could have never finished this annual without all of their hard work and coopera- tion . Thank you for all of your time and effort. The annual staff was from L to R: Seated; Wanda Keener, Becky Miller. Standing; Mr. McGowan, Debra Ungles, Kathy Rollins, Aaron Sprunger, Mark McDonald, and Mrs. McGowan. Working on the yearbook has been quite an experience for me. When Mrs. McGowan asked if I'd like to be a co-editor, I said sure why not. I had no idea the work that went with such a high honor. Then when we started on it, I thought, ' 'What did I get myself into? '' Now, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Sure it got to be a big hassle and I wanted to wash my hands of the whole thing, but it has shown me responsibility. Wanda and Mrs. McGowan have been great to work with, and so has the rest of the photography class. All in all it has been a great year and lots of fun. Becky Miller, co-editor, 1977-78. Being a senior, this year as co-editor has meant a lot to me. I was very honored to be involved in the production of this annual. Although it's a lot of hard work, I wouldn't trade my experiences this year for anything. There are so many people I want to thank. All of the faculty for letting me out of classes, so I could work and meet deadlines. The photography class, for all of the help that they gave me. It takes a lot of determination to get good photos to go in a yearbook. Mrs. Mary McGowan for all of her under- standing and help this year. She was always there any- time I had some trouble, with the answer. Becky Miller for helping me put out this yearbook, it was a long hard year. And finally you students at S. H. S., you were the material that put this book altogether! Thank you! Wanda Keener, co-editor, 1977-78. 17 Outstanding Season For Debaters Seated: Becky Miller, Cynthia Taton, Lenise Pence, standing: Darin Haegert, Kevin Connor, Marilyn Clawson, Brad Kendall, and Coach Larry Laas. 1. Win a first place trophy. 2. Win a novice trophy. 3. Win four trophies altogether. 4. Win first in league. 5. Win first at Regionals. 6. Place in the top five at the State tournament. These were the goals established by the debate squad at the beginning of the season. Did they achieve them? Yes, every one, and then some? It was an outstanding year for the small squad of seven students. They collected a total of nine tro- phies including four first place finishes. Not only did they win the Hi-Plains League Championship, but they also won the Regional Championship as well. Once again, Satanta was the only 1A school in the state to qualify for the State Debate finals. However this did not scare the young squad as they battled the other 2A schools and finishes fifth place. Our congratulations to the debaters and Mr. Laas for their successful season. Danny has been riding in rodeo's since he was eight years old. His first ride took place in St. John, Kansas. Although he didn't win anything for riding, he won a pair of boots for being the youngest rider there. He started participating in miniature rodeos, and was in the 8 to 13 division. Danny rode a bull named ' 'Honkee'' that had never been ridden before. This bull is still bucking, and has only been ridden three times since Danny rode him in 1970. In 1973 Danny joined ' 'Little Britches . He won the Jr. Bull Riding World Champion at Littleton, Colo., Little Britches Finals. Since that time Danny has won 18 All- around titles, 12 runner-up to All-around, and 1 World Champion All-around. This is a great accomplishment for a young man of 18. It's not every day a small school has a world champion as one of it's students. Danny's plans for the future include Little Britches this summer, and college this fall on a rodeo scholarship. Congratulations Danny, you have done something to really be proud of. Keep it up! 1. Danny is shown here with the saddle he was awarded. 2. Danny at the Satanta FFA Rodeo at Sublette, 1978. He won first place. 3. After the rodeo is over Danny takes it easy, and talks to some friends. 4. Danny on Gray Ghost at Kingman, Kansas (1970). He won first place. 38 The Good Times Never Stop At S.H.S. Cecil, are you making those boots for your squaw? Think about it carefully Raimon, before you make your move. Gary Stapp followed with the invocation. The meal and drinks were served by the junior fathers. The menu was party mix, relish plate, combination salad, club steak, baked potato, green beans with mushroom sauce, rolls, and cherry cheese cake. Students Love The Great Outdoors This Isn’t The End, It’s The Beginning Dr. James Costigan, chairman of the speech depart- ment at Fort Hays State University, was the speaker at Commencement. Graduation was a time of mixed emotions for both the graduating seniors and their families. They were glad that they finally accomplished their goal after twelve years of trials and tribulations, yet sad to be leaving many friends and memories. Many of their thoughts look to what the future holds, but they will never forget the many happy memories at S.H.S. The 1977-78 Satanta football team provided a lot of excitement for its fans. Led by sophomore quar- terback Darren Alexander the Indians offense scored more points this season than the last two seasons combined. The improvement of the Indian's football team is evident by the honors received by members of this years team. Troy Sturgeon received all-league honors on a 2nd team tight end. Dan Waggoner, Darren Alexander, Rick Waggoner, Aaron Sprunder, Dirk Haegert, and Darin Haegert all re- ceived honors as 2nd team all area selections from the Southwest Daily Times. Although the team only won one game, it had an opportunity to win three other games with Elkhart, Jetmore, and Sublette only to see victory slip through their fingers late in the game. The final game of the season provided the Indians with their only victory of the season, and what a fitting climax it was. Not only was it the last game of the season, but it was also the final game of the eleven man football the Indians will play for some time. Next season the Indians join the tough Santa Fe League and will be playing eight man football. Scoreboard Satanta Opponents Elkhart 6 18 Syracuse 15 43 Hugoton 0 48 . It was not a dream, it was the beginning of one of the years I will remember always with more fun. May be one of the most important things, surely because it is the one in which I've spent more time, is the school. It is small and lovable. Where you can know everybody and everybody can know you. I really will be homesick for the friends, teachers, and the staff of Satanta that haven't let me miss my home in Barcelona. I want especially to thank the Kayettes that have given me this op- portunity to know a different and really great people and their counpy. It has been my good luck going to live with such two lovable families like Sprungers and Lucases, but they have made me work for their sympathy, and really hard, although at the end I just learned to love the farm, and like the cattle. So don't be surprised if the next time you'll see me, I'm riding a tractor or something like that. In all this time I've learned about America and about its people, these things and people all together have made me grow up quite a bit more, so I want to thank everybody for this and for making me really enjoy this year in Satanta.
