As is nearly always the case, these four players will be missed on next years team, but those coming up are prepared to take over the responsibility. Danny Alexander Sam Palmgren Nights Are Forever Shawn Rrey, senior Kathy Rollins, sophomore 10 Amalia Trevino, freshman Donna Johnson, freshman The Pep Club was in charge of the 1977 Miss School Spirit which was Friday, February 11. The theme chosen was Nights Are Forever. The Pep Club nominated several girls, and the five that had earned the most points during the year were the candidates. The whole school voted on the queen. There were two freshman candidates this year who were Amalia Trevino, escorted by Sam Palmgren, and Donna Johnson, escorted by Tod Anthony. Ka- thy Rollins was the sophomore candidate, and Jimmy Birkes escorted her. Dirk Haegert escorted Angie Carroll, the junior candidate. The senior candidate was Shawn Frey whose escort was Danny Alexander. Von Anthony escorted the flower girl, Brandy Waggoner, and the crown bearer, Jason Palmgren. Von also had the honors of crowning the 1977 Miss School Spirit, Angie Carroll. Angie Carroll was active in Kayettes, Stuco, and band. She also was a class officer. Underclassmen Gain Experience In Basketball For Next Year The girls had a win-loss record of 11-5 in regular games this season. They outscored their opponents by 109 points. It was a season of experience for the underclassmen. Billie Helton, junior, scored the most points and averaged eleven points a game. Diane Dennis, sophomore, was next, averaging ten points a game. Because of Shawn Frey's leg injury, which kept her from playing most of the season, the team suffered, but they still had a successful sea- son. 1ST ROW, L. TOR., B. Helton, D. Ungles, D. Dennis, T. Shawn was out most of the season with a leg injury. Her absence was felt by all. Ruth provided leadership for the team, and she was the team captain for nearly all of the games. These girls were examples to the rest of the squad in sportsmanship and hard work. 13 Ruth Tatro Shawn Frey It Was A Season Of Building The 1976-1977 football season was one of building. After coming off of a losing season last year, it was decided that the younger teammates should get a chance to play. The whole year was played with a freshman quarterback. With only six seniors graduating, the Indians are looking to an experienced team next year. Dennis Meehan was the head football coach, and George Troutt and Dean Obermeyer were his assistants. The cheerleaders, Pep Club, and townspeople should be thanked for they supported the team even though Satanta had a losing season. Football players were, FROM L. TO R., 1ST ROW, B. Kendall, R. Lucas, D. Clawson, R. Wag- goner, D. Irvin, D. Waggoner, D. Alexander, A. Baker, K. Borger. 2ND ROW, T. Foster, C. Moody, T. Nance, G. Preedy, L. Miller, J. Baker, J. Birkes, K. Rogers, D. Because of the losing sea- son, their job was extra tough. These players weren't quitters but continued to work and display spirit and sports- manship. The organization ISPS (International Student Placement Service) made this dream come true for me and twenty-five other students from Europe and Japan. However, I think I am extremely fortunate to have been placed in a community with a cul- ture and lifestyle that are so different from my home in Angelholw, Sweden. The experience of learning to know people from a different part of the world, and be- coming familiar with the intimacy of a small school, like SHS, has broadened my views tremendously. The most difficult thing with trying to understand a different way of living is to accept and respect other peoples views and beliefs without wiping out your own standpoints. What I have enjoyed most during my stay here is probably the American food. At least I did so during the first semester (second semester I spent trying to loose weight). Finally, I want to thank all the kind people that have made my year here so valuable to me; the staff at SHS for example. Special thanks to the Kayettes, which sponsored my stay here by paying tuition-fees, my senior pictures, and my class ring. I also want to thank my terrific host-families, the Rooney's and the Frey's for making me feel more than welcome. Thank you all for having put up with me and making my year to be what it has been. Fia-the exchange student of 1976 - 77 Scarves are the in thing in 1977 so Fia completes her wardrobe. It didn't take Fia long to get into the teenage custom of goofing off in the halls. 31 Senior Life S. As usual, all mouth—Becky Miller and Jill Lucas. Renee Specht and Rick Gleason, this year's newspaper editors, attended jour- nalism camp at K-State last summer in order to gain knowledge required to produce a school newspaper properly. The newspaper staff has put out six newspapers this year. Everyone worked very hard to meet the deadlines. Al- though it was rush, rush, rush all the time, we feel that we have had good experience in publishing these issues for all the high school students to read and remember. 62 The Arrowhead editors for 1976-77 were Rick Gleason and Renee Specht. 23rd Year For Satanta Chieftain The students on the CHIEFTAIN staff were, FROM L. This year's editors, Debbie Dennis and Dena Hill, have worked hard but realize that they have gained a unique experience that many students don't have. A special thanks is extended to Mr. and Mrs. McGowan, the photographers, and the Typing II Class because they have all played an important part in the making of this yearbook. L. The juniors spent a great deal of hard work decorating and preparing for the banquet and prom. The hall was nicely decorated with pastel colors. The memory books were dark blue and silver. The junior class president, Mark McDonald, gave the welcome. Aaron Sprunger followed with the invocation. The meal was then served by the junior fathers. It consisted of fruit cup, tossed salad, baked steak, baked potato, com, French bread, and strawberry cake with strawberry topping. Following the meal, Gary Meier gave a speech on be- half of the senior class, and Danny Alexander gave the benediction. TRAX provided the music. The group came from Topeka, Kansas. They started playing at 8:00 and finished around midnight. The fine music concluded a very exciting and enjoyable evening. 76 “Colour My World” LEFT: Prom was an evening for beautiful ladies in for- mals and well groomed men. Graduation was Monday, May 23, 1977 at 8:00 in the high school gym. Keith Akins, from the Kansas High School Ac- tivities Association, was the speaker. Mr. Mark McLain, the school board president, handed out the diplomas. It was a night of mixed feelings, for while the graduates were happy about their achievements that took thirteen years, many were sad about leaving their high school days behind. The seniors were excited as they put on their caps and gowns for the final time. TOP LEFT: Debby Robinson and Shawn Frey can hardly wait until its over. They both worked hard for four years to receive their awards. Dena has been involved in Kayettes and Pep Club all four years and has served on each board for three years. She has been in Stuco, band, and PC A and was a cheerleader for three years. Last year she was a co-editor for the newspaper, and this year she was co-editor of the annual. She also was Kayette president her senior year. Gary Meier has been very active in band all throughout high school and received several band awards. He served as class president his junior and senior years. He was in Stuco two years and served on the Stuco board. Both Dena and Gary received a school service award their junior year. In his spare time, he works on his 4,000 acre ranch in Colorado. Von Anthony, now a Certified Public Accountant, has opened his own place of business in Satanta. Von said, There is only one reason you should file with me, because I need the money. Debbie Barr and her husband, Donnie, now own and operate their own automotive parts store. Just remember, if you ever need auto parts, go to DCD. Jimmy Birkes, now a forest ranger in the Kansas Mountains, finds plenty of time to mess around with beavers. Ivan Brasuell is now a professional hitchhiker. Although he claims to be very professional and experienced, he just can't seem to make it past our neighboring town of Sublette. Sandra Buchanan and Brenda Doris have changed their occupations from cleaning bed pans to making them. Their mul- ti-million dollar company is called the Slow Bed Pan Company. Debbie Dennis has just inherited her father's chain of I. C. A. stores across the U. S. the only change she has made in the store is the name; it is now called Deb's I. C. A. Wayne Evans is now a famous actor. He fuully got his first big part in a major motion picture. The name is: The Follow-Up of Chicken Wayne. Bob Fillpot now holds the world record for men's hair length. His hair, which is over 60 feet long, doesn't permit Bob to work, but he doesn't mind it because it gives him plenty of time to finish his auto-biography, which started as a journal in his senior English Class. Don Fisher seems to be very fond of the big city of Satanta. His life style still hasn't changed from the time he got out of good old S. H. S. Since Donnie finally got his first raise at Miller Feed Yard, he has been able to rent an apartment at Jim's Lounge, right under the first pool table. Craig Groth and Linda Waggoner, now married, are instructors at Satanta High School. Craig's diesel mechanics course and Linda's cosmetology class are very much alike. It seems they both like playing in grease. Mike Haddican, a brilliant electronics instructor, has made a fabulous discovery. He has almost perfected the bionic woman. The only major problem is that she won't say yes. Shawn Hayden, now an expert brick layer, has taken over construction at the high school. The construction, which started in 1976, has been delayed due to weather, labor problems, material shortages, etc., etc., etc. We're sorry to say that Robert Hicks couldn't be with us this evening. He is still in Mf. Troutt's history room trying to pass the presidents test The latest up-date we've received from Mr. Troutt is that Robert has gotten all the way to George Washington. Only 38 to go, Robert. Kim Schreibvogel is now married and has two children. Kim and her husband arc engaged in a gigantic two acre ranch- ing operation in Texas. The ranch consists of one old sway-backed horse, 60 head of mother cows, and one sterile bull. No wonder their cow’-calf operation hasn't increased. Shawn Frey is now a P. E. major and basketball coach. She is trying to teach Kim's kids how to play basketball on crutches and tear up their knees gracefully and without much pain. Shawn has also started the first women's parapletic bas- ketball team. Dena Hill, now a missionary in the deep jungles of Africa, is trying to teach the cannibals how to read. It seems she's in a bit of a stew because she is in a pot of hot boiling water. Steve Hornsby has hardly been seen since he opened his Aerial Spraying Service. He installed the spraying rig upside down, so instead of spraying weeds he sprayed himself, got high off the fumes, and finally came down a little while ago. After many years of domestic experience, Jill Hull has gone off to Hollywood, the land of the stars, where she is doing a remake of the old T. V. comedy series, Hazel. Fia Isendahl, a world renown psychologist, is spending her time studying the psychological impact of the American Energy Shortage. In the comfort of her solar heated office in Sweden, Fia laughs over reports of cold Americans who still insist that the energy shortage doesn't exist. Boyd Juel and Clark Young are now operating in their big time law’ firm in Tice. Their office is located on the north end of main street. You can't miss it if you can find main street. Jill Lucas has accomplished much these last few' years. She gets her exercise by running back and forth from the high school to the grade school since she has taken over head cook at both places. Gary Meier is now a top executive for Great Western Sugar Company. When asked if he liked working indoors now, he said that it sure beats the heck out of driving a tractor. Keith O'Neal has now opened his own business called Shake Snack. His only problem with his business is that Mrs. Haddican stands at the front door and w-on't let anyone in. Sam Palmgren has now opened a third branch of Dean's Engine Service in Cave. His motto is: Valve job, tie rod, crank shaft, too. I keep the crank and give the shaft to you. Gary Preedy has inherited his father's farm. He spends his time slopping the cows and milking the pigs. It looks like Gary hasn't changed any. Poor guy still does things backwards. Calvin Reimer has now’ opened a barber shop in Satanta. Like it says on the window, Wear it short and let me shave it. Debby Robinson, now a long haul trucker, always makes a stop at that road house in Texas called Hamburger Dan's. She's always putting a quarter in the juke box and playing Truck Drivin' Woman. Sarah Rogers is now the president of Weight Watcher's. Even though Sarah has slimmed down quite a lot, she can still remember the good old days when Wayne Evans and Don Fisher would tease her. Mike Rollins is now a distributor for Adolf Coors Company. He's good at his job, but the customers see only empty cans. Ruth Tatro, now married, is still living at Satanta. This year she is competing for Mother of the Year. She has a sure chance of winning with 14 children and triplets on the way. We're behind you all the way, Ruth. Scott Young still is on the farm and finds little time to have any fun. He farms from sun up to sun set. 85 School Service And Citizenship Awards The School Service Awards go to four students selected by the faculty for extra service those students have given the school. This year the awards went to Bob Doris, Brenda Doris (BEHIND Mr. Moody), Wally Limon and Renee Specht. The faculty also selects two seniors, one girl and one boy, for the Citizenship Award. This award acknowl- edges the students respect for the school and com- munity. It also signifies that they are good citizens. Gary Meier and Dena Hill re- ceived this award this year. 86 FACULTY 7 Teachers Share Talents This is Mrs. Dana Haddican's twenty-fifth year at S.H.S.
