1976 Chieftain This yearbook is sponsored by the Satanta High School Typing II class. Editors Ardith Rooney and Jim Rollins along with sponsor Mary McGowan would like to thank everyone who contributed to the production of this annual. They all helped to make this truly a Year of Change. Volume 22 Satanta High School Satanta, Kansas 67870 A Year of Change. Yes, this has been a year of change. The sports spotlight has shown brilliantly. The progress in the devel- opement of our school increases every day. There is building everywhere and the old face of our school puts on a new smile as construction soon reaches the halfway mark. Our country is celebrating its 200th birthday as it embarks on its third century. Our bicentennial is the key to this Year of Change, and this book will serve as the record of that Year. 1. Jr. Donny Fisher handling the other chores. 2. Sr. Laura Baker in deep thought. 3. Soph. Sandra Buchanan and Mrs. McGowan in Bookkeeping I. 4. Sr. Jimmy Lozar snatches one at Hugoton. 5. Sr. Todd Kiehne in 6th hour physics. 6. That togetherness look of Sr.'s Dale Hammer- schmidt and Chris Correll. SPORTS A Season For Change It's hard to measure the real significance of a season in just scores or statistics, you have to consider the players to determine a real winning team. This was how sr. quarterback Jim Rollins summed up this year's football season. And one could call it a successful season. All the games played this season were fine examples of competition and sportsmanship. Boasting for an improvement in this year's 2-6 finish are a group of fine underclassmen. This was the first year under head coach Dennis Meehan and his assistant, John Cordova. Overall, the squad had a total offense of 897 yards with 677 of that coming on the ground. Leading the ground at- tack was sr. Gregg Fillpot whose 336 yards earned him a 3. 2 yard per carry average. Other leading runners were jr. 's Wayne Evans and Scott Young. Coupling for the aerial attack was Jim Rollins and Jim Lozar who accounted for 156 yards on 10 receptions. Dave DuBois saw 11 completions for 166 yards and 32% average. The defensive charts were commanded by Scott Young with 49 unassisted tackles and Dale Hammerschmidt with 39. Varsity football. Sitting From Left To Right: J. Baker, D. El- kins, G. Preedy, N. End The senior class this year has provided much of the leadership and inspira- tion that is always needed for a suc- cessful squad. Many of this year's seniors started on last year's team and therefore have the experience and confidence of varsity competi- tion. This same type of confidence is being instilled in the underclassmen that helped make this season a mem- orable one. Pat Owings — Def. and Off. Tackle Jim Rollins -- Q.B. and Linebacker 8 This year's varsity volleyball lineup was, From L. To R.: Front Row, Ruth Tatro and Ardith Rooney. Second Row, Chris Correll, Elsie Limon, and Billie Miller. Back, Billie Helton. The girls volleyball team ended its season at region- al play at Winona. While many girls felt their sea- son could have gone farther, they still felt they had a successful season. The team entered two tourna- ments, an invitational at Hugoton, and the regional tournament held at Winona. The girls beat Liberal in first round play at Hugoton, and also defeated South Western Heights and Elkhart to take 4th place honors. The girls finished their season with a 3rd place ranking at regionals. Lettermen for this year were: Ardith Rooney, Chris Correll, Billie Helton, Billie Miller, Elsie Limon, Ruth Tatro, and Terrie Limon. The freshmen volleyball group boasted six members. They were: 22 -- Blanchie Limon, 40 -- Susan Simpson, 11 -- Becky Miller, 24 -- Sheri Claar, 23 -- Darlene Brown, 30 -- Kathy Rollins, not pictured, 33 -- Diane Dennis. 9 Leadership Provides Results Chris Correll, Senior Billie Miller, Senior Ardith Rooney, Senior Junior Varsity, Outside: T. Limon, S. Frey, D. Dennis, A. Carroll, Inside, S. Rogers, L. Pence. It is fitting tribute that this year's volleyball squad was led by 3 fine seniors. Behind the fine examples of these girls, others have begun to discover their capabilities and use them. This year's Junior Varsity squad has also shown potential and great promise of doing well in next year's competition. 10 Regional Play-offs Sign Of Season Varsity Basketball: Kneeling, B. Coach Meehan. It was a year of anxiety, tension, and rewards. This year's varsity pro- gram combined all the aspects that make it all worthwhile. The squad worked as a unit and brought out the best in each of the players. The de- feats that did come were in hard fought battles and margin was never larger than nine. (Only once against league champ Syracuse.) Statistically, Satanta averaged 59.4 points with Sr. Dale Hammerschmidt leading Indian Scorers with 587 and a 25. 5 aver- age. The Indians held their opponents to a 55.9 average and outscored them 1304 to 1169. They have led when leaders were needed, and fought when it came down to the wire. The seven seniors that suited up this year provided the leadership that will inspire many underclassmen to exploit their capabili- ties and bring about the fine examples of those before them. 13 Jim Rollins Girl’s Basketball Gets The Winning Feeling Lead by all-league selections of 74-75 Ardith Rooney and Chris Correll, the Satanta Indians Girl's Basketball team amassed a 21-3 record for the 75-76 season. Outstanding acheivements of the season included winning the Hi-Plains tournament held at Syracuse and tieing for first in regular season league play. The teamwork of varsity members Debbie Simpson, Nancy Preedy, and Billie Helton coupled with fine performances of Chris Correll and Ardith Rooney led the Indian Girls to first place in the Regional tournament at Holcomb. The girls returned the next week to take home second place honors in sub-state competition at Great Bend. The squad received fine supportive per- formances from the bench with Billie Miller and Diane Dennis, just a freshman, doing very well, As expressed by Coach Trail, in his first year at Satanta; The girls put together a program of which they may be very proud. The members of this year's fine Girl's squad were, From L. To R. : 1st Row, B. Miller, A. Rooney, C. Correll, D. Simpson, N. Preedy, B. Helton, D. Dennis. 2nd Row, S. Frey, K. Rollins, R Tatro, A. And most of that coop- eration was a direct result of com- munication and consideration between this year's seniors and the underclass- men on the squad. Once again, that spark of leadership has made itself known. Top Row: Seniors Chris Correll, Billie Miller, and Nancy Preedy. 2nd Row: Seniors Ardity Rooney and Debbie Simpson. Annual Staff Rushed And rushed it has been. This year's editors, Ardith Rooney and Jim Rollins, have seen the deadlines come and go. It was always at those times that the pressure was greatest and the time shortest. It was with the incredible help of copy writers, typists and above all, our photographer, Kenneth McGowan, that saw those deadlines met. Mac gave up a lot of his time and money to see that the pic- tures were there when we needed them. This was the first year for everybody and the going got tough for the editors and sponsor, Mary McGowan. But in the end, everything paid off and we, the editors, would like to convey our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to this fantastic learning experience. To those who purchased or even glanced through this ann- ual, I hope you can understand the amount of effort that went into its completion. We offer our apology to those who feel they didn't get equal coverage. We tried not to slight anybody, but because of limited time, money, and page space it was impossible. Once again we would like to thank everyone that made this annual possible. Mary McGowan--Sponsor Ardith Rooney—Editor Jim Rollins—Editor ■“ - . ■
