Homecoming '68 1 Violet Harlow, a senior this year, is an active member of the SHS student body. She is a twirler for the Satanta Band. Violet serves as Vice-President of the Pep Club and a member of the Kayette Board. Violet also is a member of the CHIEFTAIN and ARROWHEAD staffs. The junior candidate, Robyn Barker, is a mem ber of the Band and is a representative to the Band Council. She is also active in the SHS Stage and Pep bands. Robyn is a member of a special vocal group, the Mixed Ensemble. She belongs to the Pep Club and is an active mem- ber of Kayettes. ANNUAL QUEEN CANDIDATES Marci Schultz, the sophomore attendant, is ac- tive in both the Pep Club, and Kayette organi- zations. She is involved in many other activities at SHS. Earlier this year Marci was chosen as class favorite by her fellow classmates. The freshman candidate, Becky Lahey, is a member of the SHS Band. She also belongs to the Pep Club and Kayettes. DANA HADDICAN: Mrs. Haddican at- tended college at Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in Chickasha, Oklahoma, where she received a B. A. in En- glish. She did graduate work at the University of Oklahoma, and Fort Hays State College. She now teaches English II, IV, and sponsors the Pep Club. This is Mrs. Haddican's seventeenth year at Satanta High. She and her husband, William, have two children, Mary Pat, a senior, and Ramey, a sophomore. Mrs. Haddican enjoys reading, knitting, sewing, and watching basketball and baseball games. CENTER: MR. JERRY STONE: Mr. Stone graduated from Wichita State University where he received his B. M. E. in Music. He has done graduate work at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, and is now doing graduate work at Wichita State. Mr. Stone taught in Cimarron before he moved to Satanta where he is completing his second year. He and his wife, Jill, have a son, Joey, who is two years old, and a daughter, Jennifer, who was born recently. Mr. Stone's hobbies include hunting, fishing, and sports of al- most any kind. BOTTOM LEFT: MR. DON BARR: Mr. Barr has moved to Satanta from Cimarron. He and his wife, Laurita, have four children, Donnie Jr. , 12; Candace, 9; Melody, 7; and Tammi, 5. Mr. Barr previously owned his own repair shop at Ingalls, and now he teaches Auto Mechanics at Satanta. BOTTOM RIGHT: MRS. ELIZABETH McCOOL: Mrs. McCool graduated from Bethel College at North Newton, Kansas, where she received a B. A. degree. She did graduate work at Kansas State College at Emporia, Wichita State University, Kansas State University, and the University of Colorado. Mrs. McCool teaches English I, and is the Librarian. She and her husband Frank moved from Pratt. Her hobbies in- clude collecting cookbooks, traveling, and she is a rock- hound. MRS. BELTZ Mrs. Beltz has completed her second year as secretary of Satanta Schools. With cheerful efficiency she has performed her duties of keeping books, typing letters and reports, and various other secretarial duties. MRS. BOWEN, MRS. McGUIRE, MRS. SHEPARD Mrs. Bowen, Mrs. McGuire, and Mrs. Shepard have been responsible for planning and pre- paring balanced meals for the students and faculty each day this year. Mrs. Bowen and Mrs. McGuire completed their first year at Satanta High; and Mrs. Shepard completed ten and a half years. MR. UNGER and MR. SHIELDS Mr. Unger and Mr. Shields are the custodians at Satanta High School. Their duties include keeping the building clean, watering and mowing the lawn, caring for the trees, shrubs, and other plants, and various other jobs in keeping the grounds neat. Mr. Unger completed his fourteenth year, and Mr. Shields completed his third. TOP LEFT: MRS. RUBY NILES: Mrs. Niles attended college at Southwestern State, Oklahoma State, and Panhandle ASM, all in Oklahoma. She has taught in Oklahoma and at one time she was a Home Economics agent. This is her first year at S. H. S. where she teaches Home Ec. I-IV, and sponsors the Kayettes. She and her husband Carl have four children and a foster son who has lived with them for ten years. Her hobby is Boys and Girls. Besides working with them, she enjoys reading and sewing. CENTER: MR. EDWARD GUSTAVSON: Mr. Gustavson grad- uated from Fort Hays State College and has done graduate work at Fort Hays, K-State, and K.U. He has previously taught in Phillipsburg, and Lyons, Kansas. At S. H. S. he teaches English I and III, Advanced Writing, and his other duties include, assistant football and freshman basketball coach. He and his wife Denise have five children, Evan, Audrey, Amanda, Amy, and April. Mr. Gustavson enjoys archery, hunting, and fishing. BOTTOM LEFT: MR. HERSHEL LAWSON: Mr. Lawson re- ceived his A. B. from Panhandle ASM at Goodwell, Okla- homa. He has done graduate work at various colleges. This is his fourth year of teaching Speech and Debate. He also helps sponsor the Senior Class, and he directs the Junior and Senior plays. Mr. Lawson and his wife Janet have one son John. He enjoys bowling, hunting, and viewing athletic events. BOTTOM RIGHT: MR. REMEL BLUNDELL: Mr. Blundell has attended various colleges throughout Kansas. He has taught for many years besides serving as a coach and prin- cipal in other localities. This is his third year at Satanta. He teaches P. E. and Health. Also, he sponsors the Let- termen's Club, and coaches football, track, and he assists with basketball. Mr. Blundell and his wife Electa have five children, Kay, Betty, Max, JoAnne, and Barbara. TOP LEFT: MRS. EDITH STOKES: Mrs. Stokes received her B. S. in Education from Southeastern State College in Dur- ant, Oklahoma. This is her eighteenth year at Satanta. Mrs. Stokes teaches Typing I and II, Shorthand, Bookkeep- ing, and also sponsors the yearbook, and the school paper. She and her husband Oscar have one daughter, Jennifer. Mrs. Stokes enjoys reading. TOP RIGHT: MR. ROBERT VATH: Mr. Vath graduated from KSTC at Emporia. This is his third year at S. H. S. Mr. Vath teaches Current Affairs, Psychology, Sociology, Eco- nomics, and American Government. He also sponsors the sophomore class. He and his wife Jane have two children, Amy, and Shelly. Mr. Vath enjoys the outdoors. CENTER: MR. IRA BROMLOW: Mr. Bromlow received his B. S. in Math from Panhandle AGM at Goodwell, Oklahoma. This is his fourth year of teaching Algebra I and II, Geom- etry, and Advanced Math. Mr. Bromlow also sponsors the Freshman Class. A bachelor, he enjoys bowling, hunting, and fishing. BOTTOM RIGHT: MR. CARL WILSON: Mr. Wilson re- ceived his B. S. in Industrial Arts from Northwestern State College at Alva, Oklahoma. He is completing his third year of teaching Mechanical Drawing, General Shop, and Wood- working I and III. He and his wife Carol have two children Kim and Stacey. Evening in Venice was the theme for a banquet and prom that will be remembered for many years to come. Pat Johnston, junior class president, welcomed the guests. Dave Wiese, senior class president, presented the response of appreciation. Mr. Moody, principal of Satanta High School, then commented on the accomplishments of the school year and the success of school activities. The junior parents helped with the success of the banquet by preparing and serving the meal. Entertainment was furnished with a musical selection by the Boys’ Quartet. After the B basketball team had de- feated Elkhart, 57-39, the crowd's attention turned to the Miss School Spirit ceremonies about to begin. Pep Club President, ZoAnn Davis, opened the ceremonies by welcoming guests and by expressing the reasons why the stu- dents of S.H.S. had chosen This is My Country, as their theme for Miss School Spirit. After this was concluded, the high school band began playing the theme song as the ceremony began. Tom Pendergraft, a senior, directed the crown bearer Bobby Harlow, and the flower girl Lauri Walker, to the center of the basketball court where they viewed the entrance of the 1969 candidates. Appearing first was Diana DuBois, a senior escorted by Nick McGuire, also a senior. Next, junior Debbie Geist was escorted to the center of the court by Dave Wiese, a senior. Lynn Mann, a sophomore, was escorted by Dennis Simpson, a senior. Sherri Young, also a sophomore, was escorted by Randy Kernohan, a senior, and finally Ruth Wachs, a sophomore, was escorted by Randy Jones, a senior. The excitement con- tinued to build as the announcer read, The 1969 Miss School Spirit for Satanta High School is Lynn Mann. The flowers were given to Queen Lynn by her escort Dennis Simpson, and the crown, along with the traditional kiss, was bestowed by Tom Pendergraft. Queen Lynn reigned over the A team basketball game which the Indians won by a score of 67-46, and she also reigned over the dance which followed the game. Tom and the kids Debbie and Dave Diana and Nick Sherri and Randy This is My Country The Traditional Kiss HOMECOMING ATTENDANTS Darcy Lahey, the junior attendant, is a Varsity Cheer- leader at S.H. S. She is a member of Kayettes and serves as its Vice-President. She is also a member of the Pep Club and National Honoi Society. Darcy is active in Vocal Music, and is a flag bearer for the S.H.S. marching band. Jan McLain, the 1968 Football Homecoming Queen, is a senior this year. She is active in both the Vocal and Instrumental Music Departments. She is a mem- ber of the Pep Club and Kayettes. Jan serves as treasurer of the Kayette organization. Sheri Aldrich, a sophomore this year, represented her class as a Homecoming attendant. She has since moved to Texas. While attending S.H. S., she was active in Vocal Music. She was a member of the Pep Club and the Satanta Kayettes. She also par- ticipated in many other activities. Friday, October 11, was a day most anxiously awaited by Satanta football fans. It was Homecoming 1968. At halftime of a game with the Johnson Trojans, the attention of the crowd was directed to the far end of the field and the S. H. S. marching band. As the band went into the formation of a crown the can- didates, riding in convertibles, began their circumvation of the field. Arriving first in front of the Satanta stands was senior Jan McLain. She was escorted to the center of the field by senior Dave Wiese. Next, junior Darcy Lahey was escorted by Roger Aker, a senior. Next, Sheri Aldrich, a sophomore was escorted by Dennis Simpson, a senior. Finally, Janice Winter, the fresh- man candidate, was escorted by Randy Jones, a senior. The tension continued to build as the band played a fanfare. Then it was announced, The 1968 Football Homecoming Queen for Satanta High School is Jan McLain, the senior candidate.
