1967 Chieftain Published By: Satanta High School Satanta, Kansas Dedication America, America Let Us tell you how we feel, You have given us your riches, We love you so. s f m Annual Queen Kathy Helton Annual Queen Attendants These girls have been honored with the title of being attendants to our Annual Queen of this year, Miss Kathy Helton. Having been chosen by their classes, they are Gwen Brown, junior, upper left; Jan Mc- Lain, sophomore, upper right; and Darcy Lahey, freshmen, lower left. 5 CLERK Mark McLain Administration MAYSON'S HOUSE OF FINE FURNITURE TREASURER William Helton TOP LEFT: HERSHEL LAWSON: Mr. Lawson, instructor of English III, Speech and Drama, has completed two years of teaching at Satanta. Although much of his time is occupied by school activities, he still finds time to spend with his wife, Janet, and his son, John Lambert, better known as John-John. CENTER LEFT: BRYAN McDOWELL: Since teaching Spanish I, II, and III, day after day, can become quite boring, Mr. Bryan McDowell brightens his day by paying compliments to the pretty sehoritas of Satanta High School. Besides teaching Spanish his first year here, he has served as a Freshman class sponsor. LEFT: P. G. McGUIRE: Mr. P. G. McGuire relaxes at home in an easy chair, with his three children, Brenda, Pat, and Nick. Oringa, his wife, enjoys his coaching basketball as well as his teaching American History, Drivers1 Education, and baseball. This completes his third year of teaching at Satanta 8 TOP RIGHT: ROBERT VATH: Mr. Robert Vath, his wife Jane, and little Amy, have lived in Satanta one year while Mr. Vath taught Psychology, Sociology, American Government, World History. Because he is a senior class sponsor, much of his time is devoted to the activities of this class. CENTER LEFT-HAND PAGE: IRA BROMLOW: Only a bachelor is able to have this kind of relaxation. When he is all rested up, he teaches Algebra I II, and Ge- ometry. Although a bachelor, he has 25 teenagers of his own as he is a junior class sponsor. Mr. Bromlow has been with us here at Satanta for 2 years. CENTER RIGHT: CLINTON POPPE: While listening to music, his favorite subject, Mr. Clinton Poppe medi- tates on the wild blue yonder, which pertains to his pastime of flying. Girls’ Glee And Music Activities The Girls' Glee Club, Boys' Glee Club and Mixed Chorus have each participated in the same performances during the past year; this included the annual Christmas pro- gram. Several selected groups, chosen from the vocal department, entertained civic groups and service clubs. They derived a great deal of satisfaction and joy from singing. Much work was put into the preparation of the Music Festivals early in the spring. The following chart indicates the rating received, the selections they took, and the vocal group which performed at these contests; GROUP: SELECTION: RATING: League State Girls' Glee Club: Let There Be Music The Ash Grove II II Boys' Glee Club: Roll Jordan Roll I Want To Go Down To The Sea Again III m Mixed Chorus: The Christ Theme This Is My Country III II The band has been in many area performances this past year. When school began, its first appearance was in the Garden City Marching Show. Next, the band prepared for the Christmas parades at Liberal and Satanta. A winter band concert was pre- sented on February 17, followed by another marching performance for Pancake Day in Liberal. In addition to these previous marching experiences, the band worked on its contest numbers, which were: Pentland Hills and Overature in B Flat. League Music Contest was held at Sublette, where the band received a II rating. A III rating was earned at State Music Festival in Dodge City. To promote more spirit and enthusiasm for the school, the pep band played at all the home football and basketball games, and pep rallies. The band marched in the Satanta Day Parade on May 13 and presented an outdoor spring concert for the finale of the year. Junior Play PICK A DILLY BY Jay Tobias Jason Strong had just died, leaving behind him his only possession, his house. Not having read the will yet, no one knew who would inherit the house, but each member of his family had made plans for it. The will stated that the house would go to Rod Benedict and whichever Dilly sister he picked to marry. But the terms were that they were to stay in the house 24 hours. This was made difficult by the fact that the house, which was one a mortuary, was haunted by Azariah Coffin, the mad mortician, and Old Betsy Drake, the Horrendous Hag. All ended well, how- ever, with everyone getting his just reward. CHARACTERS Susan Clark...... Amanda Strong. . . Arvilla Garvey. .. Otis Garvey........ Wilbur Garvey. . . Purina Hogg......
