A high school is more than simply a building housing laboratories, offices and classrooms. It is the students who everyday put life into that building; it is the teachers who pass know- ledge acquired during years of study on to the students; it is the administrator who co-ordi- nates the activities of both students and faculty into a smooth-functioning institution. The High School Yearbook has the responsibility of recording the year's high school life, both in the classroom and out. It is the objective of the staff to insert some of the spirit of the Satanta High School students into this year's Chieftain. We've tried; here it is: THE I960 CHIEFTAIN Satanta High School Satanta, Kansas MARY ANN REIMER SHERRY STUTTS NEAR ROYALTY Karen Allison, popular Sophomore, was elected by her classmates as Annual Queen candidate. Karen is active in music and other school activities. Freshman, Sherry Stutts, was elected as Annual Queen candidate by her class. Sherry is well-liked by all the high school students and teachers. She is a Freshman cheerleader and is active in many other activities. The Junior Class elected Mary Ann Reimer as their candidate for Annual Queen. Popular Mary Ann was a member of the Junior play cast and was also in the Kayette plays. Sponsored by UNITED CARBON CO. INC. 41 PENNINGTONS and COCA COLA THE BAND spent a busy year participating in many events. The fall marching season was started with a new style of marching, precision drill, which was used through the football and parade season. The marching band performed at all home football games and was guest band at the Garden City Junior College for a half-time marching per- formance . THE BAND appreciated the contribution of the students, not enrolled in band, who gave their time unselfishly to increase the size of our marching band. The first month of concert was spent in preparation of pep band music used for all pep assemblies and home basketball games. Home- coming marching tradition was broken, and crowning ceremonies altered by a performance of the concert band for this occasion. The band gave two spring concerts featuring Jim Garner and Butch Conover as soloists. The District Music Festival provided the band with a chance to pop their buttons, after receiving a I rating for their efforts. Garner, Conover, and the Saxophone Trio were also honored with I's and participated at the State Music Festival in April. Other band members also performed at the District Music Festival with solo and ensembles and received superior ratings. The instrumental department entered a new media of music in the spring with the introduction of a stage band to their program. The last six weeks of school provided many opportunities for performance by the band and it's individual members. The band's year ended with the playing of Pomp and Circumstance, the processional march at graduation dedicated to the Seniors of 1960. BAND VOCAL DEPARTMENT THE CHORAL DEPARTMENT began its year preparing for the High Plains League Choral Clinic. This clinic was held at Satanta for the first time in many years. The Clinic was highly successful and provided the singers with an opportunity to perform in a large organization. The clinic was conducted by Rodney Walker of Wichita University. The mixed chorus sang a Christmas Concert prior to Christmas vacation with Frank Arredondo and Butch Conover as soloists. The choral department was active providing ensembles for various programs and organizations in the community and at school. The District Music Festival provided the men of the music department with a weapon to use against the women. The men received a I rating and the women all in the festival. This fact causes male supremacy to reign for at least one year in the choral department. The mixed chorus also received a II rating, but gave a very credible performance for Satanta. The year closed with a Pops concert featuring songs from many Broadway Stage Plays.
