Chieftain of ’58 Satanta Rural High School Satanta, Kansas Dedication We, the Seniors of the class of 1958, wish to dedicate this Chieftain to our sponsor, Mr. Walter Green. We appreciate the guidance, help, and encouragement that he has given to us through our four years of high school. Editor Dixie Black Sponsor Edith Stokes Business Manager Armenia Selby Assistant Editor Wynola Anthony Art Editor Ewellene Stephens Copy Editor Gloria Langley I Copy Editor Nina Fitz Copy Editor Nalina Parker Annual Queen Armenia Selby Greetings: Education is an investment. The community invests money for buildings, equipment and instructors salaries. The student invests four years of his time. This investment of time upon the part of the student could be called a deferred investment. The returns are post- poned for a few years, but they will come in each year. You have invested in something which cannot be taken from you. The only way you can lose it is not to use it. My hope is that you have invested your time wisely and that the returns on the investment will never disappoint you. Best wishes for success in a life of service in your chosen community. Since we have all reached our destination of graduation we would like to share with you our school experiences. Our intelligent movements first started in the first grade with Miss Stump as our teacher. In the class were Billy Almon, Bonnie Anton, Patsy Austin, Dixie Black, Noel Brasuell, Danny Canfield, Mary Ann Collum, Phyllis Conover, Dean Crone, Mary Lou Decker, Tommy Gales, Gloria Langley, Eugene McBryde, Etta Shepard, Buddy Smith, Raymond Stapp, Sue Stilwell, Mary Louise Turley, and Jennie Unger. Seems as though Gloria Langley learned to sit still by getting a spanking. Danny Canfield and Dixie Black got married in an operetta, with Miss Stump looking on with pride. Earnest Lawson, Jim Teergerstrom, Gwen Ormiston, Venita Pepper, and Ruth Anne Thielen joined the class in the second grade. Mary Louise Turley and Bonnie Anton found it interesting to leave the showers turned on in the girl's restroom. Wynola Anthony, Arthur Fillpot, John Long, and John Wright came in the third grade. Wynola Anthony found it very annoying when Jim Teergerstrom gave her a box of chocolates and his old girlfriend ate them. Elmer Birney was the only new member that joined us in the fourth grade. Dean Crone and Gwen Ormiston's puppy love was going strong this year. Earnest Lawson moved away in the fifth grade. Sue Stilwell and Jennie Unger lost an important friendship fighting over the same boyfriend. ) Ida Mae Deaton, Earnest Lawson, and Kenneth Dougherty joined our sixth grade class. In the sixth grade the class received their education from the office and paddle boards. While the rest of the class was going to the office, Mary Lou Decker and Arthur Fillpot developed a romance. Connie Main and Rhonda Sheldon came in the seventh grade. Patsy Austin was at the age where she enjoyed swimming so much she went in the sewer and Mr. Griffen came to her rescue. To add to our class romances Connie Main and John Wright began to spend a lot of time together along with Gwen Ormiston and Elmer Birney. 55 Class History Continued There were a few boys in the class who always had to go somewhere. Elmer Birney, Dean Crone, Earnest Lawson and Arthur Fillpot thought it would be interesting to spend the day at the stock yards. After terrific punishment they were glad to come to school. Ewellene Stephens and Ettabelle Williams joined the class in the eighth grade. After helping the grade school teachers with their education, we graduated with honors. Our room teachers during these eight years were: Miss Stump, Miss Mcllrath, Miss Groth, Mrs. Stafford, Mrs. Turley, Mrs. Negley, Mr. Palmer, Mrs. LaForce, Mrs. Good, Mrs. Schwertfiger, Mr. Griffen, and Mrs. Smith. With our natural born intelligence we entered high school with several new students joining our class: Carolyn Terry, Shirley Buffington, R. B. Dougherty, Evelyn Hockett, Donald Huff, Bonnie Johnston, Jim McDaniel, Russell Oliver, Nalina Parker, Armenia Selby, and Gary Smith. After two weeks of high school we were ready to donate our greasy bacon and rotten raw eggs to the almighty seniors. But as the year ended we were glad we stayed when we went swimming in our clothes, since we knew our mothers wouldn't care. Arthur Fillpot and Eugene McBryde left our class this year. Our sophomore year Carolyn Sue Cann, Jo Ann Conway, Nina Fitz, and Larry Spraggins joined us. Dean Crone left us the fourth six weeks. Jennie Unger took a liking to Larry Spraggins and made his stay here more interesting. Our Junior Year Dean Crone, Bobby Jeffries, and Jimmy Jones entered our class. Carolyn Terry, Bonnie Johnston, Sue Cann, and Jimmy Jones left. Sue Stilwell and Ewellene Stephens enjoyed the Prom and Banquet very much this year. How did it taste, girls? The Banquet, that is. Jo Ann Conway, Phyllis Conover, Earnest Lawson left us our Senior Year. Our Senior Year several of the kids had special interests elsewhere. Etta Shepard, Jennie Unger, and Sue Stilwell got married. Evelyn Hockett, Connie Main, and Bonnie Anton received engagement rings. Our sponsors in high school have been Mr. Green for four years, Mrs. Noland for two years. Miss Spreier for one year, and Miss McCammon for one year. With this bit of history we leave you to go forth now to make more history. 56
