THE DESK THAT HAS A HISTORY Excuse me, do you have a minute to spare? I know I am only an old desk, but I do have my feel¬ ings and my memories, and I would like to share them with someone. I realize that you have walked past me perhaps a thousand times in the hall, and so have many others... I have been here so long and now I hear that there will no longer be a Regina Teachers ' College, and I feel so sad and lonely about it. Way back in 1893 I was bought for Dr. D. J. Goggin, the first principal, and a smart young thing I was then! Many a tale I could tell about what has gone on in this school which you are leaving so non¬ chalantly. Regina Normal School, as it was called then, was first established in 1893. There were only twenty- three students that first year, and they were from all over the North West Territories. The building which housed the Normalites was on the comer of Hamilton Street and Twelfth Avenue, where I hear a popcorn stand is now situated. Of all things! Such degradation! Anyway, because that building was too small to serve for very long, in 1912 a new school, our present one, was begun. In 1914 I was moved to this school, and have enjoyed it ever since. At that time I was used by Colonel T. E, Perrett, who left to serve in the World War. During his absence, there were several who served as acting principa ls, but I was glad to see my old friend Colonel Perrett return and remain as principal until 1926.

When the Second World War started in 1939, the Royal Canadian Air Force needed barracks, and Teachers ' College was assigned for this purpose. With my friends I was moved to Lakeview School. In those days the population in this part of the city was not so large as today, and there was plenty of room for our students. While I was gone those young airmen really used this place! I was just telling the wall the other day that I remember how she looked before she had her face lifted--she was quite annoyed! After the war the building was used for various things, including the Government Correspondence School and the Department of Public Health. During the war years it was decided that two teacher training institutions would be enough, so the College here was closed and we all moved to Moose Jaw. After a hard trip there and back I was in bad shape and would have been chopped up for firewood, if it hadn ' t been for Dr. Tait and Mr. Andrews who saved me! They were the ones who rescued me, had me made look young again, and pinned on this medal which I wear so proudly. Mr. H. C. Andrews was made principal in 1944, and it was that same man who made the trip back to Regina in 1958. Dear Mr. Andrews, I wonder where he is now. I hear there has been a portrait painted of him, and that it hangs in the hall downstairs. After Mr. Andrews retired. Dr. Steinson was here for a year, and last year my old friend Dr. Tait was here as acting principal. That brings us up to the present with no more Teachers’ College as such. Of course, the only principal you know is Dr. F. L. Bates who has held that position for this past year. I have really enjoyed this year, and was looking forward to many happy years under Dr. Bates. I can hardly believe that only I am left to remember all the principals who have been here. You ' ll forgive me for taking your time by reminiscing, won’t you? You see, it is all I have left. How do I know what the future holds for me? Only God knows, yes, only He knows. Sister Monica, Class J Irene Coupal, Class B 87
