LAMPADA IHiiiiiiii He SASKATCHEWAN TEACHERS’COLLEGE REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN 1964 MINISTER OF EDUCATION THE HONOURABLE O.A. TURNBULL It is with sincere pleasure that I extend congratulations to the Teachers ' College Graduates of 1964. In a short time you will be full-fledged teachers in our Saskatchewan communities and you will be accorded the rights and privileges that a truly great profession enjoys and deserves. But remember that to every right there is attached a duty and that he who shirks duty is in the long run an unhappy person. I wish you happiness in life and can do no better than to suggest that if you give to your classrooms and your com¬ munities the best that you have, the best will surely come back to you. The entire staff of the Department of Education joins with me in wishing you every success in the years that lie ahead. O. A. Turnbull DIRECTOR OF TEACHER TRAINING You, who are graduating from Teachers ' College in 1964, may think it strange, but I do envy you. I envy you because: --you have had the opportunity of being taught by such an outstanding group of master teachers. --you are about to enter the world of teaching, a world that is in a state of flux, a world that, while it may at times be somewhat frightening, is always chal¬ lenging, interesting and exciting. --you are entering a profession dedicated to the highest ideals of service to its fellow men at a time when it, more than any other, is expected to prepare the way for peace among nations and a happy life for all. God speed and Good Luck in all your endeavours. C.P. Collins DR. F.L. BATES PRINCIPAL SASKATCHEWAN TEACHERS’ COLLEGE REGINA When the last student of the 1963-64 class walks down the steps for the final time, an era in teacher edu¬ cation in Regina comes to a close. That student is the last of a long, long line of students to graduate from this Teachers ' College. It has been a somewhat itinerant College located in several buildings and spots in Southern Saskatchewan. Its graduates, too, have travelled, often far in a physical sense and many, far in the professional or other occupational worlds. In the minds and hearts of many of us there will be an extra feeling of sadness at your parting. We are sorry to see you go and sorry to see the end of the Teachers ' College. But the end of one era in teacher education marks the beginning of another. The old building will still be in the business of teacher education as part of the Uni¬ versity of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus. There is stimulus in the challenge of the beginnings of a new venture in teacher education. We are inspired by the experiences of the past and the hopes for the future to face the challenge with some feelings of excitement. There is a parallel situation in the lives of the students going from Teachers ' College. Most of you are leaving a sheltered existence for the stimulating, challenging work of teaching in a classroom. We hope you will be nostalgic and somewhat saddened by the parting from friends at Teachers ' College. We also hope you have profited from your Teachers ' College experiences so that you can meet your challenges with ability and with confidence. This has been a delightful group of people to have in the final year of the Teachers’ College. Your Year¬ book provides the opportunity for you to reflect upon the year ' s activities. You have had a lively and a busy life here. You served yourselves and your College with distinction. In general, we enjoyed watching and help¬ ing the students in the variety of things that students do to make a College year memorable and profitable both individually and collectively. Not all the dimensions of teacher education tend to appear in a Yearbook. We hope that some of these dimensions have appeared with considerable force in the program of the year. Two, in particular, readily come to mind. We trust that interest in learning and scholarship have been stimulated so that this dimension becomes a permanent quality of you as teachers and as citizens. And we hope that you have become, or are now able to become, sensitive to and perceptive of the needs of children in this society. Without these qualities of mind and spirit there are dreary years of teaching ahead of you. This we do not predict. You are leaving us with the impression of a group who will enrich and enliven the teaching profession. On behalf of the Faculty I wish all of you success and a long life of good teaching. Mrs. M. E. Secretary (Assistant to Secretary) 5 R.H. Hunter B.A., B. Ed. PRESIDENT Our year of training here at Teachers’ College fast draws to a close. With our departure another page will turn in the history of education in Saskatchewan, for we are the last graduating class of our institution as such. By graduating as the last graduates of Teachers’ College we gain the right to teach; however, we also accept a responsibility. We accept a responsibility to the youth we will be teaching and also to society. We should be honour bound to set a moral and academic example for our pupils. We must be prepared to guide our pupils in their formative years. The importance of education, and indirectly our importance, is great, as was pointed out by the theme of this year’s Education Week, Education, the measure of a nation. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow’s society; therefore, we are challenged to help maintain a suitable and ef¬ fective standard of education. Teaching is an honoured and important profession. Let us enter it humbly, and do our utmost to maintain its high standards. T. C. Band have practised each week to achieve the high calibre of entertainment they offer their audiences. Their high quality has been maintained at each of their performances at the Tuesday morning assemblies. A Christmas concert, presented by the Glee Club, Ladies ' Choir and Male Voice Choir, was held in the auditorium preceding the commencement of the Christmas holidays. Parents and friends were welcomed. Another concert was held at the Monroe Wing of Regina General Hospital. The talent provided by each class culminated in a well-received and appreciated program. The Male Voice Choir participated in the Regina Rotary Christmas Festival, with two selections featuring the soloists Bayne Enick, Greg Shave and Tim Shire. Again, S. T. C. performed in a concert at the Moose Jaw Technical Institute, February 20, Tim Shire as M. C. A standing ovation attested to the quality of this performance. The Male Voice and Ladies’ Choir performed at the graduation exercises and banquet in June. The Band provided a unique form of entertainment by staging outdoor concerts of the school year. the latter part The whole school extends to Mr. Don Cowan, the music instructor, given us this past year. I know I am only an old desk, but I do have my feel¬ ings and my memories, and I would like to share them with someone. I realize that you have walked past me perhaps a thousand times in the hall, and so have many others... I have been here so long and now I hear that there will no longer be a Regina Teachers ' College, and I feel so sad and lonely about it. Way back in 1893 I was bought for Dr. D. J. Goggin, the first principal, and a smart young thing I was then! Many a tale I could tell about what has gone on in this school which you are leaving so non¬ chalantly. Regina Normal School, as it was called then, was first established in 1893. There were only twenty- three students that first year, and they were from all over the North West Territories. The building which housed the Normalites was on the comer of Hamilton Street and Twelfth Avenue, where I hear a popcorn stand is now situated. Of all things! Such degradation! Anyway, because that building was too small to serve for very long, in 1912 a new school, our present one, was begun. In 1914 I was moved to this school, and have enjoyed it ever since. At that time I was used by Colonel T. E, Perrett, who left to serve in the World War. During his absence, there were several who served as acting principa ls, but I was glad to see my old friend Colonel Perrett return and remain as principal until 1926. When the Second World War started in 1939, the Royal Canadian Air Force needed barracks, and Teachers ' College was assigned for this purpose. With my friends I was moved to Lakeview School. In those days the population in this part of the city was not so large as today, and there was plenty of room for our students. While I was gone those young airmen really used this place! I was just telling the wall the other day that I remember how she looked before she had her face lifted--she was quite annoyed! After the war the building was used for various things, including the Government Correspondence School and the Department of Public Health. During the war years it was decided that two teacher training institutions would be enough, so the College here was closed and we all moved to Moose Jaw. After a hard trip there and back I was in bad shape and would have been chopped up for firewood, if it hadn ' t been for Dr. Tait and Mr. Andrews who saved me! They were the ones who rescued me, had me made look young again, and pinned on this medal which I wear so proudly. Mr. H. C. Andrews was made principal in 1944, and it was that same man who made the trip back to Regina in 1958. Dear Mr. Andrews, I wonder where he is now. I hear there has been a portrait painted of him, and that it hangs in the hall downstairs. After Mr. Andrews retired. Dr. Steinson was here for a year, and last year my old friend Dr. Tait was here as acting principal. That brings us up to the present with no more Teachers’ College as such. Of course, the only principal you know is Dr. F. L. Bates who has held that position for this past year. I have really enjoyed this year, and was looking forward to many happy years under Dr. Bates. I can hardly believe that only I am left to remember all the principals who have been here. You ' ll forgive me for taking your time by reminiscing, won’t you? You see, it is all I have left. How do I know what the future holds for me? Only God knows, yes, only He knows. Students met at Regina Teachers’ College and travelled by car to Lumsden where they won a game of hockey against Saskatoon Teachers College. Following the game the students from both colleges returne d to Regina for a reception in the S. T. C. auditorium. After this, they broke into their various groups for an afternoon of competition in volleyball, table tennis, badminton, bowling, curling, and basketball. For the first time, the intramural winners from the Universities at Regina and Saskatoon also took part in the play day. A banquet was held at the Regina Campus cafeteria at 6:00 p. m. In the evening the final competitions in basketball were held, with Regina S. T. C. victorious in both boys’ and girls’ events. Following this a dance was held in the auditorium, and at midnight the play day came to an end. SASKATOON At 6:00 o’clock on the morning of March 21, 1964, more than 100 hazy-eyed students from Regina gathered at the Teachers’ College where they boarded three buses bound for Saskatoon. This was the start of the second half of the annual home-and-home play days held by the Teachers ' Colleges at Regina and Saskatoon. At 10:00 a. m. the buses arrived at the Teachers’ College in Saskatoon. Here the Regina students were welcomed to Saskatoon at a short reception held in the S. T. C. auditorium. The athletes then divided into their various competing groups to spend the day in competitions similar to those held in Regina two weeks earlier. This day also ended with a dance at the Teachers’ College in Saskatoon; and at midnight weary Regina students said goodbye to their friends in Saskatoon and boarded their buses for the trip home. The highlight of both play days was the sportsmanship shown by each College both on and off the floor.
