TO THE BROTHERHOOD Differentiation — neurotic - builds castles in the air psychotic - lives in them psychiatrist - collects the rent The nurse in a college infirmary was quite dis¬ traught. “I think the patient in room 312 is re¬ gaining consciousness doctor. He tried to blow the foam off his medication”. Did you hear about the rich Texan who wouldn’t let a doctor paint his throat until he had consult¬ ed an interior decorator. One psychiatrist to the other on a street corner “You look fine! How am I?’’ The psychiatrist told the patient “ You have a split personality. $50 for each please.” Psychiatrist to male patient. “Did this insignifi¬ cant feeling develop suddenly or come naturally after your marriage and parenthood. Did you hear about the psychiatrist who had his office redecorated in overwrought iron? The rich Texan saw his psychiatrist. “I need your help badly Doc. I’m in a bad way. I’ve been a Texan all my life and now I don’t give a-any¬ more.” SAD NURSERY RHYMES Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep They don’t know where to find her — She had a long list but somehow she missed, And there’s visitors lost all behind her. Little Boy Blue come blow your horn — The H-Hut boys are raiding the corn; Where is this lad whose neglect is at fault, Boiling the water and adding the salt. The Queen of Hearts baked some garlic tarts For the King ' s late supper we’ll say; Unfortunate things fall to odorous kings He was sent ' cross the river that day. Mary Mary quite contrary There’s a two o’clock curfew you know — The excuse isn’t made that can possibly evade That office where such students go. A diller, a dollar, an eight o’clock scholar; Oh student you’re walking on ice, There are certain things done, but this isn’t one To continue with, is my advice. LAMENT OF A PYSCHOANALYST ' S WIFE I never get mad — I get hostile. I never feel sad — I’m depressed. If I sew or knit, and enjoy it a bit, I’m not handy — I’m merely obsessed. I never regret — I feel guilty; And if I should vacuum the hall, Wash the wood-work and such And not mind it too much, Am I tidy? Compulsive is all. If I can’t choose a hat, I have conflicts With ambivalent feelings to net. I never get nervous or worried — Anxiety — that’s what I get. If I’m happy I must be euphoric; If I go to the Stork Club or Ritz And have a good time Making puns or a rhyme, I’m a manic — or maybe a schiz. If I think that the doorman was nasty I’m paranoid, obviously, And if I take a drink Without stopping to think, Alcoholics Anonymous, that’s me. If I tell you you’re right I’m submissive, Represing aggressiveness, too; When I disagree I’m defensive, you see, And projecting my symptoms on you. I love you, that’s just transference With Oedipus rearing it’s head. My breathing asthmatic Is psychosomatic, A fear of exclaiming “Drop Dead”. I’m not lonely — I’m simply dependent. My dog has no fleas — just a tick. If it seems I’m a cad, Never mind — just be glad, That I’m not a stinker — I’m sick.
