SPORTS REVIEW By Ed Tronsgard BOWLING The 1961-62 season closed with a very successful ■ banquet and party. That season the S.P.N.A. donated a bowling trophy which was won by the top team, the Aces. This trophy will be awarded annually. An 18 team league during the first half of the 1962- 63 season is an indication of the growing sports popularity. Teams making the playoffs after a half seasons play were: The Bomarcs, The Thunderbirds, The Roughies, and the Rock’n’ Rollers. The Saskatchewan Hospital bonspiel which started on Feb. 18 consisted of the following events: The Grand Challege, Association, Whole¬ salers, Retailers, Consolation. These events at publishing time were about half finished with the competition keen and tough. The Saskatchewan Hospital rink consisting of skip Ken Howrie, third, Doug Belyk, second Jim Hamilton and lead Orest Sawchuk barely missed representing North Batleford and district in the northern provincial brier when they were beaten 13-10 by Jack Taylor in the finals. Congratulations on a fine effort! LADIES SOFTBALL T he Beaver Aces were formed of players from three teams; Metropole, the Beaverettes, and Saskatchewan Hospital Aces. The executive were as follows: President — Eunice Lehne Secretary Treasurer — Jane Shury Captain — Eunice Lehne Assistant Captain — Vi Kulohiski Manager — Bill Rohn Coaches — Fred Reinbolt and Ab Bidart In the senior B playoffs, the Beaver Aces de¬ feated the Saskatoon Imperials two games straight and the Fairholm Cubs thus winning the Northern finals. The Aces ended a sucessful season by de¬ feating Biggar in the semi-finals and the Saskatoon Imperials 9-1 at a tournament in Rose-town. The provinc ial finals were won by the Sedley team in defeating the Beaver Aces three games to one. “Play bail!” TENNIS I ack Luty captured top honors for the fifth con- w secutive year in the Saskatchewan Hospital tennis tournament defeating Gene Rawlins 6-1,6-3 in the final match In the semi-finals G. Rawlins defeated Dr. Saldivar 8-6, 6-3. Jack Luty went through the preceding round-robin undefeated. Sixteen teams participated. The Saskatchewan Hospital Tennis Club was organized by the -hospital’s recreational depart¬ ment headed by Mr. Ken Richardson. Mr. Richardson and members of the club expressed the wish that more young people of both sexes would come out and take advantage of available ins¬ truction and facilities.
