It incorporates the pain and pleasure of our duty, the ideals and knowledge taught, the experience of adulthood and the rewarding burden of service found on our journey up the high road to professionalism. From the Yearbook staff and myself, may I extend our appreciation to those who encouraged us to hold our lamps high, and give the incentive to make this publication. Edwards VALEDICTORY T oday marks the end of our training for Psychiatric Nursing. When we started our course, three years ago, we looked at graduation as a very long term goal, almost beyond our reach; now, our perspective of time has changed and it seems on ' .y a short time since we experienced the anxiety of our examination. Our training involved hard work, disturbing experiences and studies which often seemed to bear little relation to our main objective. But, by facing these demands and fulfilling them, we are obtaining not only a Psychiatric Nursing diploma, but also a sense of achievement which Will remain with us throughout the rest of our lives. Today also marks the separation of the members of ths c.ass, and for this experience a tinge cf sorrow. Together, we have shared moments of stress proceeding the examinations, the unseemingly long wait for our marks, the long hours of study and also many happy moments during social gatherings. Some of us will use the course as a stepping stone to the acquirement of further studies and with them, go our best wishes for the fulfillment of their goals. To those who are going to stay, incur the responsibility to further their knowledge in order to remain a productive member of the team that contributes to the care of our patients. Psychiatric Nursing is a dynamic field and, only by keeping up with the new developments in our profession, can we hope to serve the function for which we have been trained. We are very fortunate to enter a career offering the opportunities of working in a field which presents un¬ limited scope for achievement, purpose and personal satis¬ faction. Our deepest gratitude goes to our parents who are directly responsible for the honor bestowed on us today. Through their sacrifices and good example, they gave us the opportunity to incorporate a set of values and edu¬ cation needed to become eligible for this training. We are most thankful to them for giving us the privilege to enter a field where we can secure a reward, as helping people not as fortunate as we are. Our thanks also to the administration, doctors, head nurses, supervisors, and senior nurses for their under¬ standing and valuable help. To them, we pledge to be as efficient as possible, to make up for our past inadequacy with which they graciously delt. Thanks also to our teachers for their patience and de¬ voted help in many areas of difficulty which we en¬ countered. Our best wishes of luck to our junior classes in the achievement of their goals. If they feel that “the sword of Damocles” is hanging over their heads, may we tell them that hard work and real interest will give them the necessary confidence to reach their own grad¬ uation. Tomorrow, we will work in our profession under a new status. May we take the pledge to remain the Psy¬ chiatric Nurses we have been trained to be, to better our knowledge to the best of our ability, so that we can give with confidence, and will, the best care to these entrusted to us. In closing I would like to quote a short poem by Thomas Gray, titled: Always Finish - “If a task is once began Never leave it till its done Be the labour great or small Do it well or not at all.” • - John Martin GRADUATES irv aH 1 ■■ 1 ' ' ■ H. .j MR. That season the S.P.N.A. donated a bowling trophy which was won by the top team, the Aces. This trophy will be awarded annually. An 18 team league during the first half of the 1962- 63 season is an indication of the growing sports popularity. The S.H.B.L. executive is as follows: President - John Crowston Vice Pres. - William Coldwell Sec. Treas. — Gordon Olsvik There are presently 15 teams in the league and the latest standings and captains are: 1) Aces - Grant Ross 2) Thunderbirds - Lorraine Bellegard 3) Rock ‘n’ Rollers — Gordon Olsvik 4) Roughies -Gordon Olsvik 6. Treas. - Jake Krause The Saskatchewan Hospital bonspiel which started on Feb. 18 consisted of the following events: The Grand Challege, Association, Whole¬ salers, Retailers, Consolation. These events at publishing time were about half finished with the competition keen and tough. The Saskatchewan Hospital rink consisting of skip Ken Howrie, third, Doug Belyk, second Jim Hamilton and lead Orest Sawchuk barely missed representing North Batleford and district in the northern provincial brier when they were beaten 13-10 by Jack Taylor in the finals. Congratulations on a fine effort! LADIES SOFTBALL T he Beaver Aces were formed of players from three teams; Metropole, the Beaverettes, and Saskatchewan Hospital Aces. The Aces ended a sucessful season by de¬ feating Biggar in the semi-finals and the Saskatoon Imperials 9-1 at a tournament in Rose-town. The provinc ial finals were won by the Sedley team in defeating the Beaver Aces three games to one. “Play bail!” TENNIS I ack Luty captured top honors for the fifth con- w secutive year in the Saskatchewan Hospital tennis tournament defeating Gene Rawlins 6-1,6-3 in the final match In the semi-finals G. Rawlins defeated Dr. Saldivar 8-6, 6-3. Jack Luty went through the preceding round-robin undefeated. Sixteen teams participated. The Saskatchewan Hospital Tennis Club was organized by the -hospital’s recreational depart¬ ment headed by Mr. Ken Richardson. Mr. Richardson and members of the club expressed the wish that more young people of both sexes would come out and take advantage of available ins¬ truction and facilities. TO THE BROTHERHOOD Differentiation — neurotic - builds castles in the air psychotic - lives in them psychiatrist - collects the rent The nurse in a college infirmary was quite dis¬ traught. “I think the patient in room 312 is re¬ gaining consciousness doctor. He tried to blow the foam off his medication”. Did you hear about the rich Texan who wouldn’t let a doctor paint his throat until he had consult¬ ed an interior decorator. One psychiatrist to the other on a street corner “You look fine! How am I?’’ The psychiatrist told the patient “ You have a split personality. $50 for each please.” Psychiatrist to male patient. “Did this insignifi¬ cant feeling develop suddenly or come naturally after your marriage and parenthood. Did you hear about the psychiatrist who had his office redecorated in overwrought iron? The rich Texan saw his psychiatrist. “I need your help badly Doc. I’m in a bad way. I’ve been a Texan all my life and now I don’t give a-any¬ more.” SAD NURSERY RHYMES Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep They don’t know where to find her — She had a long list but somehow she missed, And there’s visitors lost all behind her. Little Boy Blue come blow your horn — The H-Hut boys are raiding the corn; Where is this lad whose neglect is at fault, Boiling the water and adding the salt. The Queen of Hearts baked some garlic tarts For the King ' s late supper we’ll say; Unfortunate things fall to odorous kings He was sent ' cross the river that day. Mary Mary quite contrary There’s a two o’clock curfew you know — The excuse isn’t made that can possibly evade That office where such students go. A diller, a dollar, an eight o’clock scholar; Oh student you’re walking on ice, There are certain things done, but this isn’t one To continue with, is my advice. LAMENT OF A PYSCHOANALYST ' S WIFE I never get mad — I get hostile. I never feel sad — I’m depressed. If I sew or knit, and enjoy it a bit, I’m not handy — I’m merely obsessed. I never regret — I feel guilty; And if I should vacuum the hall, Wash the wood-work and such And not mind it too much, Am I tidy?_Compulsive is all. If I can’t choose a hat, I have conflicts With ambivalent feelings to net. I never get nervous or worried — Anxiety — that’s what I get. If I’m happy I must be euphoric; If I go to the Stork Club or Ritz And have a good time Making puns or a rhyme, I’m a manic — or maybe a schiz. If I think that the doorman was nasty I’m paranoid, obviously, And if I take a drink Without stopping to think, Alcoholics Anonymous, that’s me. If I tell you you’re right I’m submissive, Represing aggressiveness, too; When I disagree I’m defensive, you see, And projecting my symptoms on you. I love you, that’s just transference With Oedipus rearing it’s head. My breathing asthmatic Is psychosomatic, A fear of exclaiming “Drop Dead”. I’m not lonely — I’m simply dependent. My dog has no fleas — just a tick. If it seems I’m a cad, Never mind — just be glad, That I’m not a stinker — I’m sick. Your responsibility is to add to the world’s store of knowledge, deepen your insights and develop new skills in your chosen field of psychiatric nursing. If you accomplish this to the fullest extent of your potential the world will be a better place because you lived, studied and worked in it. Dorothy Gallagher, R.P.N. f y congratulations upon your graduation and my best wishes for your success and professional fulfillment. At this time I would like to pass on to you, Dr. Karl Menniger’s philosphy of modern psychiatric nursing. “In the modern psychiatric hospital, more important than feet or hands or brain, are the manifestations of the nurse’s heart. What he or she is, will do more for the the healing of the patients in her charge than what she or he does or knows. If you have the maturity arid; Ifchle : dee)p inner wisdom to be able to love even the people you do not like, you will be a good psychiatric nurse and you will help frightened, desperate, hope¬ less patients to get well.” Annie W. Bosner, R.N., R.P.N. T rusting your future career will bring you the stimulus, ability and ful- ■ fillment of enriching the lives of others, as well as your own, I shall leave you with this quote by Charles Kingsley, to ponder whenever you feel you cannot make that extra effort. “Thank God every morning when you get up that you have some¬ thing to do which must be done, whether you like it or not. Being forced to work, and forced to do your best, will breed in you temperance, self- control, diligence, strength of will, content, and a hundred other virtues which the idle will never know,’ Sincere Congratulations, Evelyn Klein, R.N., B.S.N. LEED ' S FINE SHOES “Everything in Cleaning Supplies’’ 1089-101st St. Phone 445-3332 Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary Edmonton ' It would be interesting, Members of the Graduating Class, to cast your horoscopes .., “YOU will be better women for the life which you have led here. But what I mean by ‘better women’ is that the eyes of your souls have been opened, the range of your sympathies has been widened, and your characters have been moulded by the events in which you have been participators during the past years. “Practically there should be for each of you a busy, useful, and happy life; more you cannot expect; a greater blessing the world cannot be¬ stow. Busy you will certainly be, as the demand is great, both in private and public, for women with your training. Useful your lives must be, as you will care for those who cannot care for themselves, and who need about them, in the day of tribula¬ tion, gentle hands and tender hearts. And happy lives shall be yours, because busy and useful; hav- ing been initiated into the great secret — that happiness lies in the absorption in some vocation which satisfies the soul; that we are here to add what we can to, not to get what we can from, life.’’ Sir William Osier With the best wishes of ' Cfuj 3hoMt Co.
