From the time we walked into the doors of Sardis as shy seventh graders, until the last days of our Senior year, Mrs. Smith has been a friend to us all. Not only has she taught us academically, but her friendly personality and Christian morals have given us all a role model to live by. We wish to thank her for her kindness and devotion. 2 3 PRIDE IS: winning against the odds, losing with class. doing your best with the talents you have, sticking together no matter what, never quitting. 4 V_____ Picture Not Available 5 President Mark Wardrup Vice-President Dana Graben Secretary Traci Holdbrooks Treasurer Rita Peppers SENIORS Timothy Oncal Baird Tony D. B. Pennington 6-0 in the 1st round of the State Playoffs. More im- portant however, is the fact that the ’88 Lions played as a tight-knit unit and turned the football program around at Sardis. Bov's Basketball: This year’s season was one of many wonders. Under the leadership of new coach, David Jack the team ac- complished many things. Even though they didn’t win a lot of games. Coach Jack was greatly appreciated Tim Roden made All-County and All-Area. Girl’s Basketball: This year’s progress didn’t go as planned. From what was supposed to be a winning season turned out to be just the opposite. We did have fun, though. Even though all of the hard work didn’t pay off like we wanted it to, just playing together as a team meant a lot whether or not we won or lost. We were Area-Runner Up for the 2nd year in a row and reached the state playoffs again. All-Area selections were Cristy Jones, Christie Cornelius and Misty Rickies. Cristy Jones also made All-County and was a 1st team All- State Selection. RECAP Track: The 1988 boys track team accomplished an unusual feat this year, placing 5 people in the State Meet at Troy State. The 440 Relay: Mark Wardrup, Tony Knott, Tony Holland, and Randy Hubbard, and Chris Ross, in the 330 hurdles, all participated at State. The team placed well in many local meets and was well represented at Sectionals. Girls Track: 1988 has been a successful year for the Sardis Girls Track Team. Sardis Girls placed first in all of the regular season meets. In the Etowah County Track Meet, the girls came back to Sardis with a trophy and a first place victory. At the Sectional Track Meet the track meet brought home another trophy and placed second overall. Fourteen girls qualified to compete in the Alabama State Track Meet. Shellie Young placed fifth in the state in the 200 meter dash. Dawn Fortenberry, Robin Irons, Talese Holcomb, and Shelby Stepleton placed seventh in the one mile relay. Girls Softball: The 1987-88 Lady Lions Softball team was one of struggle, improvement, and surprise. Our record for the year was 3- 16 with the three wins coming in the last four games and two of those in the sectional tournament. So, with that strong finish the Lady Lions not only made steady improvements through the season but also represented our school very well at tournament time. Amy Elkins made the All-Tournament Team. Baseball: The 1988 team did’t have the greatest record but eve- rybody had a pretty good time. They had a 2-18 season but they played mostly schools that were a couple of classes above them. Even though they didn’t have a very good season it will be a year that they will never forget. 35 SPORTS BANQUET — 1988 L-R; Jason Hallmark — Team Captain; Ty Harris — Most Dedicated. Even though the band was smaller than it has been in several years, the new uniforms and new show style more than made up for its size. The “Spirit of Sand Mountain” performed at all of the varsity football games as well as competitions in Guntersville, Troy, and Homewood. The band also marched in the Constitution parade in Gadsden as well as the Albertville and Boaz Christmas parades. The band performed a Christmas concert in the District Band Contest, a spring concert for the public and concerts at the Whitesboro and Carlisle schools. 53 Band Director: Charlton K.
