Manager Ramona Waldrep — Classes Cheryl Page — Co-Editor Carolyn Rickies — Co-Sponsor Tony White — Editor Carolyn Morton — Co-Sponsor Tim Gilliland — Organizations Marty Kilpatrick — Sports DEDICATION We are a part of all we meet CAROLYN MORTON The students at Sardis High School met Carolyn Morton and are richer for having done so. She gave them instructions in humanity, the love and appreciation of others, by example. She gave them confidence in their own abilities. She gave of herself as she laughed with them not at them. She gave them empathy with their sorrows. She gave them motherly affection and teacher leadership. She gave them the inspiration and courage to meet the burdens of life with energy and bravery. The greatest teacher is the one who provides the student with the desire for independence, and the necessary knowledge to be so. 3 The best part of many of the students at Sardis may be the part they learned from Mrs. Morton. For instance, did you realize that they average 11 years of teaching experience. They were smart ... as 67 percent have degrees beyond the Bachelor's degree. Some were involved: 74 percent worked with activities, even though 100 percent of the faculty were married and had their own family interests. Most teachers lived in the Sardis area (66 percent). The staff averaged 35 years of age (did you notice the good looks: or all the grey hair). Principal’s Message TO THE CLASS OF 1979 I extend my sincerest wish for success in all your endeavors. You will find that your years spent here at Sardis High School have prepared you well to meet the needs and challenges of life. 19 HISTORY DEPARTMENT Alfred Johnson Randall Musick Jerry Brooks MATH DEPARTMENT Ellen Patterson Belinda Rothrock Lynn Parrish SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Jackie Campbell Chester Shew Edie Boyd SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Johnnie Gaskin Dewey Gray Marrell Dixon r r i—i ■ 1 r BAND DIRECTOR — T AND I COORDINATOR — DRIVER EDUCATION Frank Landreth — Band Director Tommy Mosley — T and I Coordinator Jerry Don Sims — Driver Education IF3 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT 26 ft I PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASIC EDUCATION 28 LUNCHROOM WORKERS BUS DRIVERS 29 CUSTODIAN AND HOUSEKEEPER Harry Hodges and Inez Kittle I want to be your teddy bear.' Will they ever learn? Senior Year — th special year Ask any child what the best grade is and the answer will invariably be — senior. There is a mystique about being a senior because at no other time has the student been so revered, so aloof, so special. The senior has obtained the desired goal of all students. The senior year is a year of promise, challenge, reward, disappoint- ment, achievement, fun, and of course, anticipation. The senior anticipates, utilizing all the information that he she has assimi- lated to help him her be that uncommon person. The year — the year that parents look upon with dread, the year that teachers jokingly call senioritis, the year that seniors consider the high point in their life thus far — is the last step betweerrthe protection of childhood and the real world of the adult. The junior year offers the promise of activity: the promise of class rings, the promise of preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom, the promise of the Junior Play, the promise of college entrance exams, the promise of varsity football and basketball, and the promise of junior fund raising projects. The Junior year is the transition from lower classman to the antici- pation of that culmination of high school — the senior year. If years can be categorized, then the junior year can be categorized as the fun year — the year of promise. As we grow, we are thrust into unfamiliar surround- ings and among new faces which we must learn to live with, in order to take that huge step into the future. Each student at SHS must discover that the rewards of his her high school years depend upon the efforts he she puts into them. Each of us must learn to participate in all activities, and learn to give to ourselves, to our school. This requires developing the academic skills, physical skills, and social skills. Miss Alabama, Teresa Cheatam, who served as the emcee for our Miss Merry Christmas Program exemplifies this blending of skills She is an honor student at Jacksonville State University, an active member of her church and choir, and a gracious public figure The students, faculty, and audience were indeed charmed by her matu- rity, hard work, and beauty HOMECOMING QUEEN Sandy Bargfrede MISS MERRY CHRISTMAS DONNA HYCHE MISS MERRY CHRISTMAS Dawn Jenkins: 2nd Alternate Donna Hyche: Miss Merry Christmas Lisa Williams: 1st Alternate JUNIOR MISS MERRY CHRISTMAS Kelly Golden: 2nd Alternate Kim Fox: Junior Miss Merry Christmas Dana Jenkins: 1st Alternate LITTLE MISS MERRY CHRISTMAS Tracy Fox: 2nd Alternate Christie Haynie: Little Miss Merry Christmas Cassandra Lagrone: 1st Alternate MISS SNOWFLAKE Stephanie Walker: 2nd Alternate Jill Wilder: Miss Snowflake Kenya Hubbard: 1 st Alternate LITTLE MISS SNOWFLAKE Catina Thomas: 2nd Alternate Misty Brown: Little Miss Snowflake Anita Hale: 1st Alternate GOOD CITIZENSHIP BOY Stevie Gilliland GOOD CITIZENSHIP GIRL SENIOR HIGH VALENTINE COURT JUNIOR HIGH VALENTINE COURT 68 SCHOLASTIC TEAM ART WINNERS SENIOR HIGH — JUNIOR HIGH 1 st Place — Kim Fox. 2nd Place — Vicki Barnes 3rd Place — Brent Moon NOT SHOWN: 1 st Place — Rodney Teal 2nd Place — Kevin Massey 69 VALEDICTORIAN Cindy Barron SALUTATORIAN Lisa Hammond Cindy Barron Cheryl Page Barbara Carver David Morton Tony White Lisa Hammond Denise Graham Senior Class — Top Ten Percent GIRLS' STATE REPRESENTATIVE Barbara Carver BOYS' STATE REPRESENTATIVES Tony White Stevie Gilliland I DARE YOU AWARDS Denise Graham Tony White REMEMBER WHEN 74 No student can emerge from a school year without being touched and changed by the journey he has made through time, classes, organizations, and experience. Often he knows more about himself as a result of his sojourn, and in knowing more he perceives more clearly who he is and who he is likely to become. Involvement takes a willingness to give of yourself. We can offer something different. Leadership abilities, talents great or small, either visible or hidden — That's not important. What mat- ters is that we are willing to share our time and talents so that oth- ers may benefit.
