“
s4t fuz Itt ten Sardis is a school of honor. Faith and loyalty. And we'll pledge our true devotion Sardis dear, to thee. (Chorus) Strong and mighty Is thy courage Of the days gone by. We will love you as a mother Dear old Sardis High. May the crimson stand for courage. Truth we show with white. May we stand by you dear Sardis, And the things of right. (Chorus) When our path comes to a parting. High school days are ojer, We will ever be returning To the school we adore. ? yieuHvui JUNE SCOTT and MARTHA MARONEY, Editors. MARGARET L1PHAM, Asst. Editor. BETTY JACOBS, Asst. Editor. We hope that this 1955-1956 Sardonian will become one of your most prized possessions, and that you may look back over the faded snapshots and remember those good old days at Sardis High School. We are grateful to all those who have given their efforts that we may have a condensed record of the events of this school year. May this yearbook serve as a challenge and inspiration to those who will have the same respon- sibility in future years. 'DedccatcoK We. the Senior Class of 1956, dedicate this volume of the Sardonian to Mrs. Willene Gilliland, who has listened to our worries, corrected our mistakes, aided us in ad-taking”, and so generously devoted her time and guidance in our preparation of this annual. We only wish that there were something even greater that we could do to express our heartfelt thanks for her leadership and services. Sufreriu€te uCe4€t d Tfte teupe To The Seniors; It is a privilege and honor to have the opportunity to congratulate each member of the senior class. Please let me make a suggestion for each of you—it is my wish for you-- That you have a noble purpose in life That you make a definite plan for that purpose That you work your plan for that purpose Have faith in yourself and realize that you occupy an important place in life. (?£414 ‘rtyi frvuf In the early fall of 1944, there was an upheaval of the soil, and a tiny tree sprang up at Sardis High School. This tree was so tiny that it had only ten branches: Lourie Henderson, Sarah Cox, Ina Martin, Donald Pritchett, Viv- ian Martin, Herbert Mayo, Betty Young, Carl Smith, Quintella Potter and Shirley Pullen. During the next six years of elementary school our little tree thrived heartily and several more branches appeared. They were Carolyn Allen, Barbara Williamson, Gary Kilpatrick, Carolyn Whitt and Frances Golden. At the end of our sixth year we were thrilled at the prospect of enrolling in high school the next fall, but the thought of becoming seniors never entered our minds. As we entered Junior High School we were happy to welcome many new branches, most of them uprooted from Whitesboro and Carlisle. These new branches included Paul Duke. Marston Yarbrough. Georgia Gaskin, Gail Hedgepeth, Lamar Battles, Martha Maroney, Dale Hedgepeth, Ilia Richard, Eugene Holland, June Scott, Buster Kilpatrick, Donald Maddox, Louise Walker, Jerry Whiteside, Mary Helen James, and Donald Sutherlin. During our second year of Junior High, we welcomed Jack Butler into our happy number. But all of our days were not sunny and gay, because sud- denly lightning struck and we were all saddened by the death of our dear friend. Marlene Naylor. Our Freshman and Sophomore years were marked by high winds and, as a result, we lost many of the branches of our tree. Marriage and the Armed Forces seemed to hold great charm for the members of our tree. We were fortunate, however, to gain two members, Barbara Patterson and Ella Wayne Green. During our Freshman year, Mrs. Maddox and Mr. Gallahar kept our tree weeded, and our growth was rapid. We all realized the importance of scholarship and leadership. Most of our members joined the FHA and FFA. Martha Maroney entered the Civitan Oratorical Contest and won a prize. Our Sophomore year was passed pleasantly under the able gardening of Mr. Jarvis, who carefully smoothed our path of many stones. We became active- ly aware of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, with Donald Sutherlin. Vivian Martin, Carolyn Whitt, Jerry Whiteside. June Scott and Martha Maro- ney becoming members. Sarah Cox was crowned Queen of Hearts of Sardis High. (plaAA 'ftyiafouf We entered our Junior year with Mr. Campbell as chief gardener. That year we welcomed Willodean Bruce to our class. Herbert Mayo was our class president. Most of the boys were active in sports. Our play. Good Glory. was a big suc- cess. We used the proceeds to give the Seniors a banquet. Barbara Williamson and 111a Richard joined the Beta Club. We have entered our Senior year under the sunshine of Mrs. Vickers' able horti- culture. At the beginning of the year we welcomed Mary King into our happy number. Our tree now numbers thirty-six branches; fifteen boys and twenty-one girls. Jerry Whiteside is our class president, and he is also president of the Beta Club. Our class rings came the first month of school and we are all proudly sport- ing them. Paul Duke and Jerry Whiteside are Co-Captains of the football team. Lourie Henderson is president of the FT A, June Scott is president of the FHA. Sarah Cox and Lourie Henderson are new members of the Beta Club. Twelve years have passed since that early fall of 1944, and our tree has twelve rings of growth. True, some of the rings are larger than others, but it is a fair- sized tree that is ready to blossom forth and bear fruit. The time has come for transplanting from the fertile soil of Sardis High School to the unknown soil of the outside world. We look back with cherished memories and forward with the fervent hope that our tree has left seeds of kindness, love, faith, charity and ambitions to those who will follow us. Carolyn Whitt Lourie Henderson Pae n It's a sunny day at Sardis, And as I sit to write, I look around and all my friends. Just seem to come in sight. First there is June and Martha Jo, There they sit on the very front row. Sarah and Marston are planning, it seems. To fulfill a lot of their dreams. Jerry Whiteside is a whiz in books, A very nice boy,--not bad on looks. Ina Martin is tall and sly. Just give her a man and she'll get by. Carolyn Whitt and Vivian Ann, Never say much, but both are grand. (?1 Z4A “Poetfl Donald Maddox is a real quiet guy. But girls like him; he's ace high. Louise and Dean get along real fine, You'll see them together all the time. There’s Quintella and Shirley too, What one does, the other will do. Donald Sutherlin is next on the list, Speaking of great guys, he’s the best. Next is Georgia, 111a and Gail, Always studying, but always swell. Carl Smith and Bunk Holland too, Are always glad when class is through. Mary Helen is as quiet as can be, A very sweet girl, as you can see. Donald Pritchett, with his blond hair, And that certain girl are quite a pair. Frances Golden, is a radio star, Just give her a song, and her guitar. Now let's look around; who do we see? There’s Carolyn and Mary, as busy as a bee. Barbara Williamson, and Ella Wayne Green, Where you see one, the other is seen. Herbert Mayo and Paul Duke, Are both lots of fun, both real cute. Buster Kilpatrick and Gary too, Go for girls, as most boys do. Lamar Battles is an all right guy, He never studies, but he gets by. Ted Hill is quite a boy He's every girl's pride and joy. Barbara Patterson, is a true friend. There's always smiles, when she walks in. Then there's Lourie, Jack and Dale, The way they study, they’ll never fail. Now as I sit and look at all my friends, Memories go through my mind again. Most of these kids I’ve known through the years. We’ve stuck together through smiles and tears, Now school is over, and we will part. But every one will remain in my heart.
