This made up the largest class ever to enroll at Sardis up to this time. But during the first year a number of students quit school and the number dropping out has increased steadily until the graduating class now has twenty-five members, nine girls and six- teen boys. f X X A The class has engaged in several activities during high school. In our freshman year, Dempsey Hibbs entered the F.F.A. public speaking contest winning first place in the chapter and third in the district. He also entered in our sophomore year, winning first place in the chapter and second place in the district. In our junior year we sponsored a Hallowe’en Carni- val. The proceeds, $274.46, went into the curtain fund for the auditorium. We also gave the seniors a banquet. In our senior year we took a trip to Birmingham to the State Fair. Later in the year the boys went to New Orleans for a week-end tour. We also sponsored a sen- ior play, “For Pete’s Sake”. We raised a sum of $119.35 which went into the school treasury. During our senior year, Miss Willene Balenger has been the sponsor of our class. She has also been the faculty sponsor for our year book. We wish to express our appreciation for her faithful and efficient work in making this year book a success. We have had many enjoyable times together and re- gret very much that they have drawn to a close. President .... Vice-President Secretary .... CLASS POEM A great poet is Edward G, A poet laureate he will be He can write lyrics that will drive you to hysterics And here is evidence for you to see. A pair of nice boys are Bill and Ted Scott Never late for geometry, they are there on the dot They think the word theorem is a form of delirium And when tests come they are usually on the spot Charles Hamby will be a great athlete At basketball he can’t be beat, Hp knows there’s a hole, in the center of the goal. And to see him play is usually a treat. A beautiful girl is Reba Scott Of her we think quite a lot She is often seen, with her boy friend Eugene, And date another boy she says she will not A diligent lad is Dink He’ll do well in the Navy we think He wants a lifeboat, in which to float In case his ship happens to sink. As a comedian John Kirby is a honey, He just naturally looks funny. When he tells his jokes, you can see all the folks. Sit back and laugh at little Johnny. A football player is Jack From the Army he’s just back Tn every game, he attains much fame, Because for sports he has a knack. Curtis Mayo is very gay He thinks life is happier this way He believes a joke or two, when you are blue. Is an investment that will surely pay. A very cute girl is Nell In her studies she does excell. With a sly little blush, she’ll tell you to hush. But she always seems to mean well A nice boy is Dennis E. He’s a hard worker you can plainly see, His only ambition, is to obtain a position. As a tree surgeon, and a good one he’ll be. Marion Brownlee is an expert on the guitar People come to hear him from afar, When he plucks the strings, the music rings, As he plays boogie-woogie, 8 to the bar. I + £ f i ft A girl of distinction is Betty Jean She usually is studying wherever she is seen She goes to the show, with Leon her beau, And as a rule she is quite serene. Kenneth Chamblee plans to live on the farm Where the rooster is the only alarm He will raise cotton, corn, and hay, making his living the easy way For it’s plain to see, work never did anyone any harm. Another good boy is Harlon J. He’ll be an officer in the Navy some day He’ll sail the seas with the greatest of ease, As he does things the Navy way. Floyd Wilson drives a beat up machine Around sharp curves he likes to careen He thinks it’s great fun, to see how fast it will run When making a light while it’s green. Levearl Hayes is a very bright boy Out of study he obtains much joy. He goes to the picture show, and sits on the front row And is happy as a child with a new toy. Willie Mae is a pretty young housewife She aspires to be one all of her life She cleans the house, and cooks for her spouse And we wish them no discord or strife. Robert Cox is a hard working senior He wouldn’t be guilty of any misdemeanor He studies his books, he’s gifted with good looks. And at learning there isn’t anyone keener. A good natured student is Melba Jo It is rumored that she has a beau He would have to be tall, and that isn’t all His features would have to be just so. Joyce and Edith are very good friends They are almost like inseparable twins Where you see one you see the other, they’re almost always together And here’s hoping their friendship never ends. Willodene Hefner is very smart She can always be counted on to do her part Her daily work, she wouldn’t shirk For to her study is an art There’s no nicer looking girl than Faye She grows prettier every day She’s also studious, and very fastidious And with us she rates O.K. Abie Richards, one of the outstanding students, enter- ed the Future Farmers of America Public Speaking con- test of the Sardis Chapter in which he won third place. We were handicapped by the lack of equipment and experienced players. However, we were very enthusiastic about football and feel sure we will do much better next year. Basketball did not turn out as well as was expected. Most of the players were inexperienced. Since the boys showed they were interested the board has decided to give sports all the support possible. Scott, Vice-President; Billy Hefner, Secretary; Dempsey Hibbs, Treasurer; Eldred McDonald, Reporter; F. W. Waldrop, Advisor. One of the aims of the F.F.A. is to develop leadership among its members. We won third place in 1944, second place in 1945, and sec- ond place in 1946 in the district contest. Our chapter has won the F.F.A. basketball district tournament for the past two years.
