Math Society The purpose of the Saratoga Springs High School Mathematics Society is to broaden and deepen the interest of its members in mathemat- ics, to increase knowledge of the sub- ject, and to pass on to others an appreciation of the values and beau- ties of the subject. Among the activities undertaken in previous years have been mathletic competition, slide rule instruction, biographical sketches, bulletin boards, computer instruction, and probability and statistics instruction. The purpose of the Saratoga Springs High School Mathematics Team is to participate in the Warren- Washington-Saratoga Mathematics League. In 1975-76 the team finished first in this interscholastic competition Usually five contests are held dur- ing the school year. X SHS Band The Saratoga Springs High School Band is comprised of students who enjoy playing a wide range of music from Bach to modern jazz to rock. Although Band is an elective it is treated much the same as any other subject. Homework consists of taking music home and practicing the more diffi- cult passages. The Band also takes exchange trips with other schools. This enables the members of the band to meet other students who share their same interest in music. Overall, it proved to be a very successful night. French 5 took 1st place in the judging with their wax museum. It encouraged the victory by the football team over Queensbury the next day. Mr. George Proctor's enthusiastic commentary was a key factor for the excitement of the Pep Rally. It was announced that the Class of '77 won the spirit con- test, which was the display of various posters throughout the school. The class of '77 also won the shouting contest. A pie eating contest between Tim Rossi, Dave Diggins, john Carey and jim McAndrews provided much fun and laughter for all. This contest was won by jim McAndrews. The cheerleaders provided enjoyable entertainrnent through a Pompon routine to Mickey Mouse played by the Pep Band. '7 X-3 l Homecoming Weekend 1976 - The Parade The 1976 Homecoming Parade was one which will not be forgotten. The parade, starting at 12 noon on Homecoming day at the parking lot off Spring Street and going up over Broadway to Lake Avenue to the East Side Rec, dazzled many spectators. In addition to the three Class floats, the Band and Girls air: ,Q rm 02.41 an ff., r, ... - Sports Club were also represented. The imagination put in- to the G. S. The touchdowns by Willie Doherty, Tim Rossi and Mickey Walczakg interceptions by Robert Bruce and the efforts of quarter- back Tom Peterson all led the team to their victory. The defense, led by Paul Klernentowski, Paul Somersall and john Kirkpatrick, also helped by keeping Spartan yardage down. VE 'fir' H , ef Slum we .., 111 fun, Homecoming 19 6 Halftune The height of the halftime of the 1.976 Homecoming game was the presenta- tion to the Junior Class, represented by President Danny Mulligan, of a fifty dollar check from Student Council for coming in first in the float contest. The check was presented by Master of Ceremonies, Mr. John Morrissey. The Senior Class won second prize and the Sophomore Class Won third. Half time festivities also included a pompon routine by the cheerleaders and good sounds from the Pep Band, led by Mr. Jacobson. The Homecoming Dance was the closing event of an action filled Homecoming week- end. There had been a Pep Rally, floats built and judged, a victory over Queensbury in football that afternoon and now the dance to celebrate and learn the student's choice of Homecoming Queen. The nominees for the title were Jxdgggn ,Doher11y,WSharon,!ysz.yer,- Jamie Galligan, Julie Johnston, and Maureen Gyles. Their escorts were Dave Balmuth, Willy Doherty, John Dwyer, Joe Leon, and John Zurmulen. The elected runner up was Maureen Doherty and the 1976 Homecoming Queen was Julie Johnston. The dance was sponsored by Student Council, and students and teachers danced to the good sounds of Sassy , a local band. This was the second consecutive homecom- ing victory dance, and like the one before, it was a success. We hope Saratoga High can look forward to many more like it. v I ' E E Z, Something New During '76 Dance Marathon This year something new was planned for the student body-- a Dance Marathon. This 23 hour dance was held at the Knights of Columbus and was planned by the junior and Senior classes. The dance was disc-jockeyed by WKAJ during certain hours, and the rest of the time by Mike Chops Doyle. The top two money makers received trophies and the next eight received S25 sav- ings bonds. The next 50 received T-shirts. The dance was en- joyed by all including the chaperones. All that afternoon the question of who would win stuck in everyone's head. Some remem- bered football season '76 as others remembered the basket- ball game at Glens Falls eariler in the season. But the outcry was the same-We Love Our Team! Winter Weekend Winter Weekend '77 started off with the building of snow sculpuires. Each class was represented in the contest and despite some damage that was done to the sculp- tures they were all com- pleted successfully. J 1976 Varsity Track nd Field The Saratoga Springs Boys Track Team coached by Mr. Deyo posted a disappointing 1-4 Foothills Council record, but had some outstanding ac- complishments by members of the team. john janisch, a junior, gained the more points than any other mem- ber of the team and always placed in his events which were the high and low hurdles. Tim jackson, a senior, pole vaulted 13 feet which is a new school record. He shut out the Foot- hills Council in the pole vault and caxne in first in the F. C. Champion- ships. Neil Theiss was a constant win- ner for the team in the high jump. He also came in first in the high jtunp in the F. C. Championships. He was al- so 3rd in Section II competition for the high jump. They were considered the rnostim- proved Field Hockey Team in the Foot hills. Last years' overall record was 2-9-1, and this years' was 6-5. Out- standing players of this season were Meg Kelley, Lori jones, Lori Hartman and Leisha Washburn. This year the Blue Streaks almost went to sectionals but were stopped by a questionable game against Queensbury, who de- feated them 2 to 1. Next year they look forward to another winning sea- son and a trip to the sectionals. They were 6-4 in league play and 10-4 in overall action. Their leading scorers were Meg Kelly and Donna Ketchum. In the sectionals Saratoga Went up against Bethlehem, a team which had not lost in the past three years. Sara- toga lost but not without giving the opponent a close and exciting game. The girls j.V. Volleyball team was 4-6 in the league and 6-8 in overall. High scorers were Aleah Bradley with 115 and Terri Dreimil- ler with 44. Junior Varsity nd Varsity Soccer Have Tough Year The '76 Soccer season wasn't successful in terms of wins and losses. It was a year in which the boys learned the idea of team Work and the importance of skills In spite of the poor record, a good relationship Was maintained among the team members and all are looking forward to next year.
