P11 THE 1948 Recoulet Volume LII Published By The Senior Class Saratoga Springs High School Saratoga Springs, New York 907900016! The I948 RECORDER staff has endeavored to make this Hfty-seconcl issue of the Saratoga Springs High School yearbook an interesting and com- plete record of the important events of the school year. Both academic and extra-curricular activities are included. We sincerely hope that the graduating class, other students, alumni, faculty and friends will be able to recall and enjoy these familiar scenes as well as the people who made them. If so, the purpose of this edition of the RECORDER will have been accomplished. Special credit is due this year to a member of the Junior Class, Edward Harran, who will be graduated this June. Few people have the determination and skill to accomplish this difficult task in three years. BUSINESS STAFF BUSINESS MANAGER..... F ACULTY ADVISER. .....Audrey Ellsworth .....Harold M. Haswell K31 To Willis S. Gale, whose vision, principles, and friendship have been a guiding force in the schools of the city for seventeen years, the Class of I948 dedicates this RECORDER. Our best wishes are with him in the broader field of his Alma Mater, Wheaton College. Dedication m SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Miss Alice Swartfigure Mr. Claude Van Wie Miss Jeanne Norton Mr. Murray T. Right: Schecter nabbing a 32-yard pass from Veitch and Harrison being stopped against Delmar. Whenever we look back to the football team .of I947, we will always remember that it was the team that never was beaten by more than one touchdown. Although we tied two of our seven opponents, we could manage to win only one game. This team, outfitted in new uniforms and tutored by a new and able coach, Hutchin Tibbetts, aroused a spirit never before seen by a Saratoga football team. At the end of the half in the season's opener, a heavier Watervliet squad held a 6-0 margin, but last quarter touchdowns by Downing and Rydberg furnished the Streaks with a 13-6 victory. Then Bethlehem Central and Glens Falls had to be satisfied with 13-6 and 6-0 victories on successive Saturdays, and then the Streaks held Scotia and Mechanicville to ties. Veitch took the opening kick-off against Mechanic- ville and raced 75 yards for the score. On a drenched Fort Edward field, a costly fumble in the final minutes of play cost us the game, 6-0. When Johnstown scored early in the first quarter, it appeared as if our distinction of never losing by more than a touchdown was going to end in our final game, but with Chuck Kuenzel shooting passes all over the held- one going to Downing for six points--we held on gamely, only to lose, 13-6. Among the individual leaders, Bobby Veitch reeled off the most yardage by rushing to nose out Teddy Rydberg, 214 yards to 208; Chuck Kuenzel topped the aerialists with 10 completions, good for 94 yards and a touch- down; Tony Sansiveri hauled in seven passes for 57 yards; Bobby Downing took scoring honors with 12 points; and Bobby Veitch averaged 35 yards for 32 points. - On the line, Gus Dering and captain Buddie Rhoades played every minute of every game, and along with the stalwarts, Dewey Senecal, Elmer Dering, Kent Fonda, and Loren Brown, spent much of their Saturday after- noons in the opponent's backfield breaking up plays and recovering fumbles. Highlighted by a trip covering 125 miles, a double- header, and a no hitter, the 1947 baseball team turned in another successful season under Coach Bernard Fasulo with a 12-2 record. After winning their first seven games, two of which were one-hit shut-outs hurled by Jack Ferguson over Mechanicville, the team traveled' 125 miles to Ham- ilton only to lose in the last inning, 4-3. Ferguson also hurled both victories in the city series with St. Peter's, and pitched a no-run, no-hit game and hit a home run to give the Streaks a 1-0 decision over Johnstown. On closing day, the Streaks won a double header from St. Peter's and Burnt Hills, 6-2 and 15-2. Charlie Adinolfi and George Ellis led the hitters with averages of 350 and 318 respective1y; Chuck Kuenzel at first and Dick DiVesto playing third topped the fielders with only one error each; and Jack Fer- guson and Charlie Harrison, the mainstays of the pitching staff, compiled records of 6-1 and 3-1 re- spectively. ,Irst Row, left to right: Stephenson, Lanzara, Rhoades. Although the Streaks won two out of three dual meets and came second in a triangular meet, they lacked sufficient depth necessary for success in the meets which they attended at Schenectady and Albany. They opened the I947 track season with seven firsts in eleven events in winning a dual meet with Lansingburgh, 552K; to 39V3. After they lost a meet with Glens Falls, 742A- 29X5, they defeated Mechanicville in a dual meet 56V; - 38373. They won eight of eleven events in whipping the Red Raiders. After being inactive for the last few years, the Varsity Club organized under a new letter system, and thus with more members, has been able to accomplish many things for the athletes of the school this year. Membership was extended to those athletes who had a varsity rating, which is received after one year's participation on a varsity team; the following year these athletes receive their varsity letter. The club sponsored three banquets: one for GYM Boyl' Gym Giau-Coach Tibbetta-6th Period BOY'S SPORTS MANAGERS T. Sanaiveri. J. Each member also went on at least one trip to New York, either to see a track meet in Madison Square Garden or to see a few base- ball games in the Yankee Stadium. The club provided its own funds for these activities by working at the concessions during the football and basketball games and by putting out programs for the football games and for the basketball finals. Another Name For Courage, the Easter Play presented on March 24 and directed by Mr. Mac- Gregor was one of the most thought - provoking plays given in recent years. In a series of character studies it revealed the human weaknesses and virtues of the leaders of a modern church and showed how they ap- proached the problem of the homecoming of boys who were seriously crip- pled in the service. The play centered about Frank Cruber, the great- great grandson of the fa- mous Franz, who came to the ancestral home in Bavaria on Christmas Eve. While staying in Bavaria. Frank witnessed the events leading to the writing of the famed carol. i641 CHRISTMAS PLAY -- ANGEL SONG Left to right: D. Claydon. H. Snyder. A. Woodworth, C. Meader, J. Shay. F. Rhoades. B.
