(1953) CLASS PROPHESY As the giant stratoliner soared up and away from La Quardia Field, New York City, the stewardess, busily engaged in making the passengers comfortable, came toward us and we immediately recognized her as Janice Wagner. The twinkle in her eye came about because the pilot of the plane we were on was Dale Simmons, her old high school sweetheart. Dale had been a Jet pilot in the Air Force, stationed at the South Pole for the past few years. After talking to her a while, she told us that across the aisle from our compartment was Judy Halley, so we hurried across to talk to our old school chum, for Janice told us that we were all headed for the same destination, Saratoga, Indiana. This was the year 1965 and the old Toga was now a booming metrop- olis of 500,000 people Just all because one fine spring day in 1955 Ara Huber struck oil while digging holes for raspberry bushes in his garden. Mr. Huber was now fabulously wealthy and was president emeritus of Huber University which had an enrollment of over 10,000 students. We learned we had quite a few acquaintances at H.U for Jean Shierling was Dean of Women, Robert Schlechty was head of the department of Mathematics, and Mrs. Mildred Shierling had recently retired from her office as head of the English Department. In further discussion we revealed to Judy that we, the team of Charlotte and Les, better known to her as Charlotte Cultice and Leslie Barkdull, were on our way to play an engagement at the famous 52 Spot, renouned nite club of the Midwest, which was owned by Jerry Ison. He had purchased it with funds resulting from his being star pitcher for the New York Yankees. Judy told us her mission to Saratoga was to secure a story for her paper, the New York Daily Mirror, about the mysterious death of the husband of the former Odema Girton, owner of Sac's of Fourth Avenue. Arriving at the airport we saw the Mayor and Chief of Police coming toward us. And believe it or not, we recognized the mayor as Bob, who was now His Honor Robert Edwards, and the Chief of Police was Gene Jackson. After the proper greetings had been exchanged we immediately hailed a taxi, asking the driver to tell us where we could find a car rental agency. As he turned around to tell us, we saw it was another of our old buddies, Stanley Smiley. While driving down town he explained to us that he was driving the taxi in place of the regular driver who was sick. Stanley said he was the owner of the Speed First, Safety Last Taxi Company. Pulling to the curb he told us we could rent a car here. Going inside the mammoth Ford garage we happened to meet the owner, who stood with his hands in his pockets and puffed on a big cigar. And who was this? Another friend of ours, Donald Whittbd. After chatting a while, we loft for the Statler Hotel, where, we discovered, we were all staying. Deciding to Join in on the excitement, we accompanied Judy to the hospital where she was to consult the doctor and nurse who were in charge of the case. Arriving at the hospital we were very surprised when we were met by Dr. Elvln M. Powers and head nurse, Joyce Barkdull. From them Judy obtained part of the information she was after. The next morning being Sunday, we attended 11:00 services at the Third Street Christian Church. Hearing the church bells as we entered, we looked around and pulling the rope with all his strength was our old History teacher, Eugene Horton. He told us he had been ringing the bells every Sunday for the past ten years. We were delighted for the speaker that morning was Rev. Howard B. Castle Ll.D. Howard was making quite a name for himself as an evan- gelist, the Billy Sunday of our generation. While dining at the hotel, Judy received a telephone call from Chief Gene Jackson. The case was solved. A Mr. Charles Fullhart had walked into a local police station that morning and confessed that he had shot the Mr. Sac3 with an atomic bullet causing his heart to explode. It seems that Mr. Fullhart was Jealous of all the beautiful dummies Mr. Sacs kept in his store windows. We of Saratoga High School had always known there was something wrong with Mr. Fullhart. Well, Judy now had her story, we were playing a very successful run at 52 Spot , and Mr. Fullhart was in his little padded cell with his conscience at rest. My, how things can change. —Charlene Cultice, Judy Halley, Leslie Barkdull— CLASS HISTORY In September, 1941, fourteen scared youngsters entered the first grade to meet their new teacher, Mrs. Mamie Fields. These small adven- turers were Howard Castle, Merri Lee Deckman, Jerry Durham, Barbara Fields, Odema Girton, Gene Jackson, Gordon McCagg, Billy Moore, Elvin Powers, Edna Roberts, Eunice Roberts, Bob Schlechty, Jean Schlerling, and Dale Simmons. After two years with Mrs. Fields, we were advanced to the inter- mediate room to continue our pursuit of the three R's under the guidance of Mrs. Gertrude Warren. The fifth year of our venture found us chewing gum and slyly passing notes under the watchful eye of Mr. William Ashley. Mrs. Beatrice Everett took the helm as we entered the sixth grade and steered us on toward our goal—Junior High. In no time at all we were entering high school - the Freshman year! About the third week of September, the three upper classes were amazed at the odd array of characters and costumes making an appearance in the assembly. Freshman initiation—one of the big days of the year! Shortly after Christmas we donned our new red and white sweaters, proudly bearing the numbers - 53 on the sleeve. In the fall of 19 7 we received the coveted award. This year marked the beginning of our row by row advance through the assembly. That first day of school saw seventeen conspicuous seventh graders occupying the south row. Our class roll now included Joyce Barkdull, Dennis Barron, Howard Castle, Bob Edwards, Odema Girton, Jerry Ison, Gene Jackson, Georgia Misslcano, Elvin Powers, Bob Schlechty, Jean Shierllng, Dale Simmons, Edna Whiteman, Barbara Van Note, Stanley Smiley, Patricia Davis, and Patty Jo Wright. As sophomores we began working to raise money for our class trip. Selling magazines and serving at banquets during our sophomore and Junior years helped us to accumulate funds. In conjunction with the seniors of '52, we produced our class play, Everything Happens to Us. Having progressed to the Junior row in the assembly we were at last privileged to wear class rings. However, a few of these precious rings soon changed ownership, some even appearing upon the fingers of students of rival schools. In May of 1952 we set forth in a chartered bus bound for Niagra, New York, and Washington. It was a very weary, but much more sophisti- cated group that returned home ten days later. When school opened this fall the handsomest class ever to grace the north side took their places in the assembly. Our senior year has been full of activity with the production of the annual, participation in the class play, and plans for graduation festivities. We are also anticipa- ting a short class trip after commencement. Of the twelve members qf our class, these students have received twelve years of training at Saratoga: Odema Girton, Gene Jackson, Elvin Powers, Jean Shierllng, and Dale Simmons. We, the seniors of '53 truly regret that our pleasant years at 'Toga High are at an end and we shall look back with many fond recollections. Juniors Here'8 Tora Sommer striving With his 38 Jolopy. When it comes to driving, We all agree he's sloppy. Beautiful and tall and slim, She's a studious one. Quiet, sweet, and very prlnj, That's our own Yvonne• Leslie, the Romeo of the class Pursues every lucky (?) lass And if he gets her on the hook. He'll mark her down in his little black book. Charlene, our society dame, Hopes someday to achieve great fame. Also to snare a honey, Who's rolling in money. Janet is our fighting gal. Ask her and she'll show you how. She really is a lot of fun. And never works when she can run. Though Joyce is only half-pint size, She 8till tries to chase all the guys. She sez, Chasing is so much fun, I hope I never catch onei Now here is Judy, with lots of pluck, Who gets out of mischief Just by luck. Her laughing is pleasant, her giggling a sin. But somehow her actions attract all the men. Janice, the girl who leads all the cheers, Is quite attentive 'til a certain senior appears. When his '36 Chevy goes by, She goes into a trance with a long sigh. Bill, our little man with a big car, Has a sophomore girl who thinks he'll go far. We believe you'll find after the basket-ball game, He's parked down a quiet country lane.
