ln addition to basic courses found in the typical high school science department, our department offers interesting electives. Advanced biology, while offered as a year course, can be taken by semester. This course, for which biology is a prerequisite, includes laboratory blocks on plant growth, metabolism, fetal pig anatomy, and dissection. Organic gardening is a semester elective, for which biology is a prerequisite also. Students grow plants in a garden using organic methods. They learn about plant growth and cultivation. Ecology is also studied. Astronomy is the newest semester elective, open to all students but freshmen. One of the major aims is to introduce astronomy as a possible lifetime hobby. Students have the opportunity to observe the heavens with an astronomy club. It is hoped that some students will even make their own telescope.
