Reading ' Saratoga High's English department has grown considerably in the past few years. They now have a staff of sixteen teachers, each a different personality. This year we had the pleasure of getting two new teachers, Julia Yamaoka, and Elsie Taketa. Julia Yamaoka did a terrific job coaching the Speech club, and has added a unique touch to the Public Speaking classes. Our English department offers us many different courses 'and opportunities. Drama is an English elective taught by Judy Sutton. This class enables students to participate in learning about Theatre Arts and different techniques. This past December they put on a Christmas pagent that was quite successful. The students really enjoy this class because it gives them a chance to explore new territories. Whe have a fine department and hope it con- tinues to develop. 85 english

I have been under the direc- tion of both men, and it sure was to my benefit. I found that both Mr. Page and Mr. Northrup pro- vided all their students with the best knowledge in the area of music. Mr. Northrup this past year directed the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Band, Sym- phonic Band, Concert Band, and the Stage Band. All bands received awards in all of the competitions that they entered. The Marching Band went on to win first place in the Los Gatos Christmas Parade, which was well deserved. I found my time well spent under the in- struction of Mr. Northrup. Nlr. Page was the director of all the choirs and the orchestra this year. In addition, he directed the musical, Oliverl. He brought the orchestra to San Diego for a week to perform at a convention. This was a big honor for the orchestra and Mr. Page. While I was working under the direction of Mr. Page, I found it enjoyable. Both Mr. Page and Mr. Northrup taught Harmony. This class was offered to those students who wanted to expand their musical by composing their own songs. Thanks to both directors, my musical background, as well as that of other students, has been ex- panded to broader limits. music
