Soccer takes Fifth League Championship The Saratoga Varsity soccer team took another De Anza League Championship, compiling on amazing 26-O record for the last two years. In the first round of CCS the team outlasted Woodside 3-O. This game showed the teams explosive offense, which scored 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. The defense was also im- portant, turning back all of the woodside's attacks. In the next game against Cubberly, the Falcons got early goals to beat them 5-2. In the semi-finals, the Falcons lost to Watsonville 2-1. Even though WatsonvilIe's win- ning goal came with just one minute left, they were slightly a better team and deserved to win. There are many reasons for the soccer teams amaz- ingly consistent record. One is that they have played 10, months out of the year for the last 2 to 3 years. Another is the fine coaching job of Cliff Draeger, who has put in hundreds of hours in all levels of soccer in Saratoga. The third, and probably most important, is that the team is very close and can work out any problems that face them. This year the team also got national recognition from two of its players. Eric Price was drafted by the Oakland Stompers, the newly acquired professional team in the area. Both Ted Rafalovich and Eric Price were selected to the All-Far-West team, with Ted Rafalovich being named as a High School All-American. There were only 3 players of the All-American team that were located West of the Mississippi River. The team also had many All-League and All-CCS play- ers. The All-League players were Mark Graham, Brent Hilton, Jeff Burke, Vince Tubbs, Kevin Vandermate, Ted Rafalovich, Eric Price, and Alex Viva. Alex was also voted the leagues most valuable defensive player. All-CCS hon- ors went to Ted Rafalovich, Eric Price, and Alex Viva. Other Players that contributed a great deal to the team's success were: high-scoring forward Chris John- son: halfback Tim Hargrave, Ken Munson, Jeff Lane, Scott Drake, and Scott Solberg, Fullbacks Chris Marshall, Scott Lucas, and Scott Ursin-Smith, back-up goalie Matt Druketg and manager Dennis Watts. Soccer in Saratoga has come a long way in the last four years, and now when people think of Saratoga, they'll think of soccer. varsity soccer
