Varsity basketball For the basketball fans at Saratoga High School this year's varsity team proved to be an exciting one, with five players Don Herick, Rob Babcock, Greg Jones, Dave Marino and Mark Strasburger back from a last year's team that was just in the threshold of being a winner. There was a good nucleus in which to build a successful season. Don Herick started his third year on the varsity and proved to be one of the top players in the central coast section. He was definitely the main cog in the Falcon machine being named by his teammates as the team's Most Valuable Player for each of the last two seasons. But the most improved area could be at the guard position where two sophomores Peter Smith and Randy Arrillaga have displayed their fine talents. Their devel- 1 upbeats the year opment at these two positions meant the difference between a successful and unsuccessful season. Junior Mike Cooley has also shown vast improvement and will be battling for a starting birth. The Falcons employed an aggressive pressure de- fense along with a quick releasing fast break in an attempt to put points on the scoreboard. We entered competition in the new De Anza League which includid the six teams from the Fremont District and Saratoga High School. The biggest confrontations were with a tough Monta Vista squad and a tall Cupertino team. However the Falcons, this year, have improved shooting and ball handling and definitely pulled a few surprises in this strong new league. -Coach Dan Wilson
