On a recent Monday our fourthrperiod English class had the chance to interview Miss Esteves, the new speech teacher at Saratoga High. We prepared ques- tions ahead of time. As she walked into our room all eyes were upon her, but she just casually propped her- self on top of the student desks and with a big sigh said, OK., fire away. Miss Esteves is a 22 year old graduate of San Jose State with a B.A. in Drama and a minor in music. She also has the honor of holding the title of Miss Santa Clara County. These were some of the questions that were asked: How did you get interested in the Miss Santa Clara County Contest? I always wanted to be in a contest like that just to prove to myself that I could do it. One day a friend suggested it to me. She had already entered. I asked myself, 'lWhy not? so, there I went. What have some of your experiences been as Miss Santa Clara County? Weli, once I was asked to wear an eleven-thousand dollar diamond. l'm asked to a lot of ribbon cuttings, banquets and speeches. I've never made so many of them in my life. The amount of people you meet is fantastic, especially the little kids. They really admire you. What do you do in your spare time? I love baseball, gymnastics and dancing. Dancing! I guess l'd say I have inherent Latin beats. I also enjoy traveling and playing the piano. If I were a millionaire, I would probably spend my life traveling meeting people living. I adore autumn days, dark days with stormy weather, which coincides with mystery. Mystery stories -love them! lguess I'm a Taurus all the way. How did you be- come motivated in the teaching career? I think I've always had the career of teaching in mind. l love act- ing and drama. I thought, why not combine it? I love teaching kids. lt's a great feeling being able to share your knowledge. How do you feel about women's lib? Women, as far as l'm concerned, are just as intelligent as men. Are you planning to marry in the future? I'd love to share my life with someone, but I haven't any plans in the near future. We all learned that Miss Esteves is an exuberant, energetic, vibrant person that seems positive of herself. We hope her life will stay suc- cessful, as it has been so far. -Jennifer Freuh New speech teacher joins English department LEE SHELDON English I I GENEVIEVE PALACE GEORGE SCOTT English I, English III English Ill, Basic Art, JANET COX Yearbook, Journalism English III LARRY JOHSENS Composition and Litera- MARTY LIPMAN ture, English Ill English III MARGARET JANOFSKY JOSIE WERNEKE English II English I. LOUANN MADSON PAT RUNG ' English Ill, Science Fiction English Ill, En Ii V I r Qu M ww ,N Now that classes this year are supposed to be em- phasizing careers and how each course you take can relate to an occupation, it is only appropriate that the English department receives the special recog- nition which it deserves. According to tests given to high school seniors throughout the county, students at Saratoga ranked in the 90's in English related sub- jects. What better preparation is there for any ca- reer, and life in general, than knowing the basic skills of writing and grammar? No matter what field you enter - whether it's as a nuclear scientist, anthropologist, or newspaper editor, being able to read and write clearly is essen- tial, and according to the study taken, Saratoga students are pretty good at both! mu!
