Rooter commuters l'm sure you've all heard of the meatball, the bench warmer, and the water boy not receiving adequate recognition, but the fact that you've heard about them so often indicates that their status in the athletic world is not toally obscure. I'm not here to reflect upon these people, but to reflect upon the truely unsung heroes of Saratoga football- the Rooter Cummuters. When you arrive at school to ride the rooter's bus, the typical scene is a large group of people waiting ex- pectantly for the buses to arrive so that they might get a good seat for the trip. For the departure at 5:15, the buses arrive in the Saratoga parking lot promptly at 5:30. ln an instant, the doors open and the students pile in. The security system to control stowaways is excelled only by the airtight security of Watergate. Each person who rides the bus gets his hand stamped for identifica- tion. l'm not sure whether the stamp prohibits you from getting off or getting back on. To avoid the unsafe condition of only two people per seat, a packing factor has been calculated based on the air bag principle. With everyone stacked in the bus, if there is any abrupt change in direction, it is accompa- nied by the whoosing of lungs being compressed. It is not to be said that the buses are overcrowded. Never do they exceed the maximum capacity of forty-two- in the first three seats. The congenial personalities of the Saratoga-Los Gatos bus drivers misinterpret the whoosing of lungs and moans of pain for an unruly group of students. I understand that to acquire this congenial personality, l Clockwise, Cheerleaders await the football players break-through. Spirit section show that we have SPIRIT! Varsity cheers us on. contribute support the bus drivers are required to slam the door on their feet at least once before meeting the students. I think some exceed the minimum requirements. The yellow peril of the freeways lurches forward into the misty night with a billowing burst of carbon monox- ide and the fine mist of motor oil belching from the tailpipes. You realize that you've arrived at the game when the bus slams to a stop and the door creaks open. Amazing- ly enough, there are few casualties when the students explode from the bus. lt normally takes an experienced trailblazer to find the way to the field after getting off the bus. Some- times the faint din of distant drums can lead you to the game or occasionally a glow of light on the horizon indicates the location of the field. The anxiety you experience in the stands is in re- gard to the return trip home rather than the outcome of the game-another expected victory. After the game, as students pack into the bus, the bus driver determines the time for departure by trying to close the door. If the door closes without a hearty heave, then he opens it again until the bus reaches full capacity. Once full, the bus lurches forward, rumbling home in- to the night. So, after enduring such hardships to support our boys in red, I feel the 1976 Saratoga Rooter Com- muters deserve a rousing cheer. Rah! -Tina Dunton l
