Cross Country no. 1 in regionals After running most of the summer on our own, following a build-up program put together by Coach Harmatz, we started meeting as a team on August 9 and by this time running ten miles a day. We made a one week trip to Yosemite, including daily runs totaling ten miles, one at 7:00 a.m. and the other at 4:00 p.m. Along with the workouts we really made the best of the week, we hiked, swam and attempted to cook our own meals. The food and elevation had peculiar effects on some of the run- ners. But this trip no doubt prepared us for the races ahead. The workouts were more physically tiring than the actual races, which were more mental. Nothing was better than a pat on the shoul- der and a wish of good luck from your fellow teammate. And then right before the race a short prayer to God that l'd run my best and that nothing tragic would happen. In the Stanford invitational, the course was about 2.7 miles and our Varsity was up against about 25 teams. Even though the compe- tition was tough we came through, with Martin Rohe in the top ten, picking up a medal and his brother Matt close behind, followed by Steve Bruns and the rest of the Varsity team achieving a first place trophy. All the preparation, including morning runs. Often times some of us had to get up at 6:30 a.m. and run, in order to make it to first period. This, along with Coach Harmatz's well put together workouts and excellent coaching all paid off in League Finals, Regionals and CCS. ln League Finals the Varsity team, led by Steve Bruns, Martin and Matt Rohe finished as League champions for the second year in a row. The Junior Varsity also took the League with Chuck Johnson, George Heiner and Brian Prestwich taking lst, 2nd and 3rd places. Finishing 3rd in the League were the freshman. In the Regionals, the Varsity came through in first. Unfortunately the team had a bad day at CCS with some injuries, so they didn't finish as well as predicted. George Heiner after a fine race.
