42 Swim coach develops potential High School swimming was always the time of year I looked for- ward to. It seemed that there was no way that you could do badly. But the best part was having your buddies with you at meets. The race was yours to swim and win, but you always did your best be- cause your teammates wanted you to do well as much as you did. lt's hard to believe how Coach Devine can develop potential in everyone. He puts out the criteria and it's up to the swimmer to make himself what he wants. And it still means as much to me now as it did when I was a freshman to hear Coach Devine tell me that l'm doing a good job. But the most interesting part of swimming was the uniqueness of the people who go out. l've never had so many guys stay away from me in the locker room as I did in high school. Swimming seems to bring out those hidden drives and desires that one acquires from reading nasty novels. And the taper for finals seem to bring these to a rigid peak. And finally I want to thank my mother and all swimming mothers, Coach Page, Ann Skidmore and Coach Devine for making it the best it could be, -Chuck Kessel The starter pulls the trigger and BANG goes the gun and the timer's reflexes jump as they start their stopwatches too early. As the sun goes down and your ears are ringing and your clothes are soaked from being splashed - well, this is what it's like being a timer for a boy's swimming meet. There are a few advantages of being a timer I am pleased to say. After each event one must ask the swimmer's name in whatever lane you may be timing, and by-golly, you run into some muy guapo muchachos from other schools.
